NEW JEWELRY
POLICY DEFINITIONS
Here’s what’s new with eBay’s jewelry policy
eBay has updated the eBay jewelry policy to provide clearer definitions of what can be listed in the Fine and Fashion Jewelry categories, which more closely align with industry standards.
We have expanded our list of fine and fashion metals, gemstones, and materials that can be listed in these categories. We have also updated our listing requirements to help you describe your items more clearly and accurately to ensure they’re listed in the appropriate category (i.e., Fine or Fashion). Policy changes include:
- A requirement that the metal type or gemstones need to be Fine as defined in the policy to list items in the Fine Jewelry category. If any part of your item is Fine, then it should be listed in the Fine category.
- Fine metals that are plated or filled with another fine metal must be listed in the Fine Jewelry category.
- New Item Specifics for those materials in each category. Sellers will be required to use these new Item Specifics when listing.
- Clarified listing guidelines for treated, enhanced, lab-created and simulated/imitation items.
- Natural diamonds that have been enhanced must include "Enhanced" in the title, Item Specifics, and description of your listing.
- Natural gemstones that have been treated must include "Treated" in the Item Specifics and description of your listing.
Listings that don’t follow these guidelines may be removed and your selling privileges may be restricted, and your account may be suspended.

eBay is more closely aligning our policy with jewelry industry standards—and clarifying what can be listed in the Fine and Fashion Jewelry categories. The updated policy will include:
- A list of materials and gemstones that can be listed in these categories.

What are the major changes?
If any part of your item is Fine, then it should be listed in the Fine category. For example, a simulated stone on a precious metal setting of 24-carat gold should be listed in the Fine Jewelry categories. Items that don’t have any Fine components should be listed in the Fashion categories.
-
If I already list Fine Jewelry items, how will I be impacted?
The Item Specifics in these categories are changing to align more closely with Fine Jewelry materials. You will need to provide accurate information about your item in the Item Specifics, and make sure all information is consistent in your listing, including your title and description.
-
If I already list Fashion Jewelry items, how will I be impacted?
If your items have any precious metals or fine gemstones, then they should be listed in the Fine Jewelry categories.
-
Why is eBay making this change?
We are making these changes to help sellers describe their items even more accurately and completely while helping buyers more easily find items. Buyers will also have all the information they need to make informed decisions, and help reduce any after-sale issues.
-
What do I need to do?
Familiarize yourself with the new policy to ensure you are listing your items in the correct category and using the correct Item Specifics, description, and title for your item.
-
When do I need to make these changes?
The policy and Item Specifics changes occurred on April 5th; therefore we encourage you to make any necessary changes now to ensure that your items are optimized in Search. New listings will be required to comply with the policy, and sellers with existing listings will be provided a period of time to update their listings or for their current listings to complete.
-
What will happen if I don’t change my listings or if my item is incorrectly listed?
Listings that don’t follow these guidelines may be removed, and you may be subject to a range of other actions, including restrictions of your selling privileges and suspension of your account.
-
What if I don't know the purity of the metal or the type of stone used in my item?
It’s the seller’s responsibility to accurately describe an item. Avoid making any claims or statements about the item for sale that you are unable to verify. We recommend having the item appraised before listing it on eBay. For example, if you’ve received an item as a family heirloom but are unsure as to whether the metal is pure, you should not claim that it is or list it in a manner that leads a buyer to believe that it is, unless you have verified its pureness. If you are unsure, we recommend having the item appraised by an independent jeweler prior to listing the item on eBay to ensure you are representing it correctly to future buyers, and maximizing the sales amount.
