Improving your search standing
In this article

Best Match is the sort order for our search results. It helps buyers find exactly what they're looking for from sellers they can trust. For sellers, it helps them get their listings in front of the buyers who are most interested in what they're selling.

Your listing's position in Best Match is determined by how well the item matches what the buyer is looking for, its price and shipping cost, and your track record as a seller.

Make your listing relevant to the buyer's search

In search results, we'll display the listings that most closely match what the buyer is looking for.

Relevance helps determine your listing's position in Best Match. Your fixed price listings will appear in search results based on the listing's recent sales in relation to the number of impressions it received. An impression is any time a buyer sees a search results page that includes your listing.

A listing with 100 recent impressions and 10 recent sales will appear higher than a similar listing with 1,000 recent impressions and 10 recent sales. That's why it's important to make sure your listing is relevant to a buyer's search.

Use our search visibility analysis tool to help you improve your item's visibility.

Here are some tips for success:

Tips

Here's how:

Write a good title and description

  • Use up to 55 characters to include words buyers use to find your listing.

  • Include words that describe your item: the brand, designer, year, size, color, material, or even terms such as "antique."

  • Avoid using words in your title that are misleading or irrelevant to your listing. For example, if you sell accessories and your listing appears in search results for a specific product, you'll get a large number of impressions and a lower number of sales. The low number of sales relative to the number of impressions reduces your overall visibility in search.

Select relevant categories

  • If you list in only one category, make sure it's the right one. If you list in two categories, make sure your item is likely to sell in both categories. If the second category is not relevant, your placement in search results will be negatively impacted. See Selecting a category.

Provide as many item specifics as possible

  • List your item's features, attributes, and condition. For example: if your item is new but you don't specify it, buyers who narrow their search to find only new items won't see your listing.

Use product details from our catalog

  • If your item matches a product in our catalog, you can list your item using product details from our catalog. When buyers search for products that are in our catalog, such as a DVD or video game system, matching products appear first in search results.

Focus on customer satisfaction

Providing great service is key to your selling success. The better your customer satisfaction ratings, the bigger your boost in search results, and the better opportunity you'll have to become a Top-rated seller.

When it comes to customer satisfaction, your buyers' opinions count. To determine who provides the best service, we look at your detailed seller ratings (DSRs).

Detailed seller ratings (DSRs) let your buyers evaluate you anonymously on four criteria:

  • Item as described

  • Communication

  • Shipping time

  • Shipping and handling charges

Top-rated sellers will get promoted in Best Match for fixed price listings. Sellers not meeting the Seller performance policies will have both their auction-style and fixed price listings limited.

To see where you rank in customer satisfaction, use your Seller Dashboard to monitor your detailed seller ratings.

Price your items and shipping costs fairly

As you price your items, consider shipping costs as part of the equation. If your shipping charges are excessive, your search standing will be lowered. To see how buyers rate your shipping and handling charges and shipping time, review your Shipping detailed seller ratings in your Seller Dashboard.

When deciding how to price items, look at similar listings. For fixed price listings, offering low prices can spark interest in your items.

Increase your recent sales

Your recent sales value is the number of unique buyers who bought items from you using your fixed price listings. If you sell multiple items, take advantage of your sales volume to receive a boost in search results.

Listing performance score for fixed price items: Relevance is important for fixed price listings. Fixed price listings have a performance score based on the listing's recent sales in relation to the number of recent impressions it received. The performance score is a more accurate measure of how buyers perceive a listing than recent sales alone.

Exposure for multi-quantity and single-quantity fixed price listings: Fixed price listings are given exposure in Best Match even though they have no sales history. New multi-quantity and single-quantity fixed price listings are given a number of initial impressions based on the relevance of similar listings.

How do your items appear in search results?

A number of factors affect how your items appear in search results. Here are the details:

Question

Answer

Do all my items appear in search results?

Yes, we include all items that match the buyer's search in search results.

Listing multi-quantity items with variations helps you to list more items. For example, you can list a shirt in red, green, and blue in one listing. A buyer searching for a red shirt will see your red shirt in search results.

Which listing format should I use to increase my visibility in search results?

Each page of search results shows both auction-style and fixed price listings.

  • Use the auction-style format when:

    • You're unsure of the value of your itemand want it to sell right away, allowing the eBay Marketplace to determine its value.

    • You have unique and hard to find items that could attract demand and spur a bidding war, maximizing profits from your listing.

    • You are currently using auction-style listings and you have a high sell-through rate (your items typically sell the first time you list them).

  • Choose fixed price when:

    • You have multiple items that you can group into one listing.

    • You know the value of your item or know the exact price you need to get for it.

    • You have a lot of inventory and want to minimize your upfront insertion fees. Use 30-day durations and try automatic renewals (Good 'Til Cancelled) to boost efficiency.

    • You want your items to be available to buyers for more than 7 days.

Among auction-style listings, which receive a higher search standing?

Listings that are ending soon are given an additional boost in search results.

Among fixed price listings, which receive a higher search standing?

There is no single factor that will determine top placement in fixed price listings. Relevance, listing performance score (sales per impression), and a seller's performance rating all contribute to each listing's placement in search.

Can I use a listing upgrade to improve my search standing?

Featured First can give your items additional visibility in search results.

  • With Featured First, your listing appears in the special featured section above the Picture Gallery. You must be a Top-rated seller to use this feature.

By promoting your items with listing upgrades, such as bold, you can affect your search standing.

How do I gain additional visibility for my Store or listing?

With AdCommerce your ad (for your listing or Store) is visible to eBay users in the Sponsored results section of search results. You can run reports to see how your ads are doing. You pay only when buyers click your ad in the search results.
