Troubleshooting eBay Enhanced Picture Uploader

eBay Enhanced Picture Uploader is only supported when using the Internet Explorer Web browser (version 6 or later) with Microsoft Windows (Windows 2000 or later). While it may appear to be available and operate on other browsers, such use is not supported by eBay.

To install the eBay Enhanced Uploader ActiveX control software when using Windows XP or Windows 2000, you must be signed on to your computer with a user account configured with local Administrator permissions. You can refer to the Microsoft support article “How To Create and Configure User Accounts in Windows XP” for instructions about how to determine and change the permissions for a user account.

The download and installation time for the eBay Enhanced Uploader ActiveX control software is approximately ten minutes for a dial-up connection and one minute for a broadband connection. You will be prompted to download and install the ActiveX control software whenever the Enhanced tab in the Sell Your Item form’s Add Pictures window is selected and the software is either not already installed, or the installed version is out-of-date.

Internet Explorer settings and third-party ad blocker, pop-up blocker, and firewall software can interfere with the download, installation, and use of the Enhanced Uploader ActiveX control software. If you encounter problems please review the tips below.

If you are having problems installing the Enhanced Uploader, please change the following Internet Explorer settings in the order listed below.

Adjust security settings on Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer security settings must be set to enable the download, operation, and scripting of signed ActiveX controls. The default setting of Medium allows these actions. Before changing your security settings you should consult the Microsoft support article "How to use security zones in Internet Explorer".

Turn off the Internet Explorer pop-up blocker

  1. Open Internet Explorer.

  2. Click Tools on the Internet Explorer menu then select Internet Options...

  3. Click the Privacy tab.

  4. In the Pop-Up Blocker section, clear the Block pop-ups check box. If there is no check in the check box, click the Cancel button.

  5. Click the Apply button.

Delete the contents of the Internet Explorer Temporary Internet Files folder

The Temporary Internet Files (also referred to as “cache”) folder contains copies of Internet Explorer downloads when you use eBay and other Web sites. It’s best to delete Temporary Internet Files right after your computer is started, and before you open any other programs.

  1. Close all windows and restart your computer.

  2. Click the Windows Start button and select Control Panel.

  3. If the top of the window reads "Pick a Category", click Switch to Classic View.

  4. Open the Internet Options Control Panel.

  5. Click the General tab.

  6. Click Delete Files, select the Delete all offline content check box, then click OK.

  7. Click the Apply button.

  8. Click the OK button.

Temporarily disable your Web accelerator

Web accelerators—for example, the AOL TopSpeed accelerator—are programs that speed up browsing of some Web sites. Web accelerators can cause Enhanced Uploader problems by incorrectly filtering out or altering scripts used to install and operate the Enhanced Uploader ActiveX control.

If possible, temporarily disable your Web accelerator software (consult software vendor or ISP documentation for specific instructions). If this enables the Enhanced Uploader to work, then you will need to disable your Web accelerator whenever you use the Enhanced Uploader. Or, if possible, change its settings to not cache content from "*.ebay.com" Web addresses.

Adjust your firewall settings

Firewalls limit how your computer communicates with Web sites and are an important part of your computer security. However, they can also block content you need to receive or send with eBay and other Web sites. You need only one firewall enabled on your computer and its settings must allow content to flow to and from the ebay.com. As a first step, if your computer runs the Windows XP operating system and you have installed a third-party software firewall (e.g., Norton Internet Security, ZoneAlarm), then disable the built-in Windows XP firewall if it is also enabled.

  1. Click Start.

  2. Select Control Panel.

  3. If the top of the window reads "Pick a Category", click Switch to Classic View.

  4. Select Network Connections.

  5. Select Local Area Connection.

  6. Click the Properties button.

  7. Select the Advanced tab.

  8. Clear the Internet Connection Firewall check box.

  9. Click the OK button.

Note: DO NOT disable the Windows firewall unless you have another software or hardware firewall enabled. If the Enhanced Uploader still does not work, then consult your firewall software documentation for how to enable web page scripts and pop-up windows selectively for eBay and any other Web sites you visit.

Switch to the eBay Standard or Basic Picture Uploader

If the troubleshooting tips included here do not enable the Enhanced Uploader to work on your computer, then we recommend you try either the Standard or the Basic Picture Uploaders. When you are ready to add pictures to your listing, just click on the tab labeled Standard or Basic in the Add Pictures section of the Sell Your Item Form.

Note: Depending on whether you have Adobe Flash Player, version 9 or later installed, you will see either the Standard or Basic tab—but never both at the same time. Even with Flash installed, however, you can switch to Basic from the Standard tab by clicking the link included on the Standard tab.
