About eBay Giving Works

eBay Giving Works is the dedicated program that helps sellers list items on eBay to benefit nonprofits. The program is administered by PayPal Giving Fund, our nonprofit partner.

Because charitable fundraising is a highly regulated area subject to numerous state and federal laws, eBay has created specific guidelines for allowing charitable solicitations. Learn more about our charity and fundraising policy.

eBay Giving Works listings stand out with a nonprofit icon . The nonprofit is also described in the listing. Nonprofit listings also receive additional visibility through specialized search functionality. eBay Giving Works listings on average tend to sell more often with more bids and at higher final prices.

Here's how it works:

A nonprofit decides to list a cashmere sweater to raise funds for itself. Because the nonprofit is doing its own selling (Direct Selling), 100% of the final sale price will support the member nonprofit. The sweater is listed at $10 and sells for $100.

Types of nonprofit selling

When a nonprofit organization is certified to be included in the nonprofit directory, the organization can fundraise with eBay Giving Works either through Community Selling or Direct Selling:

Community Selling: Anyone can sell an item on eBay and donate 10% to 100% of its final sale price to your nonprofit organization. The minimum donation if the item sells is $1.00. For eBay Motors Vehicles the minimum donation is 1%. PayPal Giving Fund will notify you of the listing. If you prefer not to be associated with the listing, you can request that the listing be canceled. If the item sells, PayPal Giving Fund will collect the donation, issue a tax receipt to the seller, and send the donation amount to your nonprofit.

Direct Selling: As a Direct Seller, a nonprofit organization can list its own items for sale on eBay and collect 100% of the final sale price. The nonprofit collects payment from the buyer, and is responsible for providing a tax receipt, if applicable. The nonprofit will need to add its eBay user ID to its PayPal Giving Fund account as a Direct Seller before it can create this type of listing. A staff member or supporter of the nonprofit can use their own user ID to do this. All sales associated with this user ID will be considered Direct Selling for the nonprofit.

Certifying your organization with PayPal Giving Fund

To get certified to be included in our nonprofit directory, you'll need to register your nonprofit organization with PayPal Giving Fund. When you register, this is the information that you'll need to provide:

  • Current email address

  • Electronic copy of your logo in JPEG (.jpg) or GIF (.gif) format; 50KB maximum

  • Mission statement of 512 characters maximum (about 40 words)

  • 501(c)(3) letter or other proof of tax-deductibility

  • Voided bank check to establish electronic funds transfer of donations from Community Selling

PayPal Giving Fund will send you a confirmation email when it completes the certification process. Certification can take up to one business day and includes verification that your organization is in good standing with the IRS and meets our community standards by not promoting violence, hate, or illegal activities.
