Selecting a category
Help buyers find your items by selecting the category that best describes your item. Be precise when you select your category so it's the most relevant one for your item. In some cases, we might change your listing's category if you've selected a category that doesn't match your item.
Finding categories used for similar items
One way to find a category is to find out what other sellers have used for similar items.
To see which categories other sellers have used:
In the search box enter keywords that describe your item (such as "Mickey Mouse watch" or "Coldplay CD").
In the drop-down menu, select All Categories or choose a category from the list.
In the resulting listings, notice the categories and subcategories used, the number of bids and the page-view counter (if shown) in each category. Select the category with highest bid and page-view counts.
Be specific. For example, a search for "Fenton glass vase" returns more precise search results than a search for "vase."
Be careful when using "and," "or," and "the" as keywords. eBay searches for "and," "or," and "the" in listing titles rather than as logic for keywords. Use these words only when searching for item names containing them (like "Diana Ross and the Supremes" or "Truth or Dare").
Don't search by the category name. Searching by category (for example, "Collectibles") searches for items where sellers have included the word "collectibles" in their item title (for example, "vintage collectible belt buckle”).
Using a category you've used before
When you list an item, we save the category you used so you can select it again. You can use this category as your main or secondary category.
Selecting a category when you create your listing
To select your category:
Click the Sell button at the top of the page.
Select a category using either the search box, the Browse categories link, or Recently used
Select a category that best describes your item.
If you don't find a category you like in the list of categories, refine your search. Try using additional or more descriptive keywords.
Optional: Select a second category using the suggested categories. After you select a recently used category, you might find that the options available for your second category have changed. This happens because you can't list in the same category twice. Learn more about listing in two categories.
After you've selected your category, click the Continue button to continue listing your item.

Creating a listing with variations
You can create a listing with variations if you want to offer choices in your listing, such as a T-shirt in a variety of sizes or colors. Listings with variations are always fixed-price listings.
Some advantages of creating listings with variations:
You don't need to create a separate listing for individual items, which saves time and money.
Buyers have the convenience of selecting one or more variations of the item without scrolling through a large number of search results.
You can track inventory for individual items to make sure you don't run out.
Currently, you can create a listing with variations in most categories within:
Clothing, Shoes & Accessories
Home & Garden (most sub-categories)
You can use our category look-up tool to find out if listings with variations are available in your category.
Types of variations you can specify are:
Any other variation you specify
To create a listing with variations:
If the category you selected is eligible for listing with variations, a pop-up window appears that asks whether you want to list variations.
Select Yes and click the Continue button to create your listing.
