Setting up automatic payments
In this article

When you start selling on eBay, you need to select an automatic payment method for your selling fees. You can change your payment method at any time.

For information on payment requirements, late fees, and payment schedules, see Payment due dates.

Learn more about making a one-time payment.

If you have any credits on your account, they will be applied to your payment for each invoice. If you don't want to apply your credits to your payment, you can change your seller billing preferences in My eBay. With this change, any credits applied to your account after we create an invoice will apply to next month's invoice amount. This setting does not affect payments, which will always apply to your payment deduction amount.

Paying with PayPal

PayPal is a safe, convenient way to pay your selling fees automatically. When you set up automatic PayPal payments, your fees are automatically deducted from your PayPal account no sooner than 10 days after you receive your invoice.

How automatic PayPal payments work
  1. PayPal withdraws funds from your PayPal account balance.

  2. If there are insufficient funds in the PayPal account, PayPal uses the funding source you selected when you signed up for automatic PayPal payments.

  3. If you didn't select a preferred funding source during that process, PayPal uses whatever PayPal funding source you've provided.

Changing your PayPal funding source for your selling fees

You can change your PayPal funding source for eBay fees at any time. To ensure that new information is used for an invoice payment, please update the account before the end of your billing cycle (either the end of the month or the 15th of the month).

To specify your funding source:
  1. From the PayPal home page, log in to your PayPal account.

  2. Under the My Account tab, click the Profile link.

  3. In the Financial Information column, click the My preapproved payments link.

  4. Click the Set Available Funding Sources link to change your funding sources.

  5. Choose your funding sources, and then click the Save button.

If a payment from this preferred funding source fails, (for example, the credit card expires), the eBay invoice amount can be paid from other available funding sources.

Note: You can also specify funding sources that you don't want to use for automatic payments from the My preapproved payments page.

Paying by Direct Pay

If you prefer, we'll automatically deduct your selling fees from your checking account on the same day each month. The day is based on the date you're invoiced. This option is available to sellers who have U.S. bank accounts and are billed in U.S. dollars. If you select this option, you'll need to provide your routing and checking account numbers. eBay will deposit a few cents into your bank account to confirm your account information. If there aren't any problems with the deposit, your account will be confirmed and it will be used to make automatic payments. You don't need to do anything else.

Note: This process may take up to 1 day after you provide your account information.

If you're invoiced in the middle of the month your checking account will be debited no sooner than the 30th of that month. If you're invoiced at the end of the month your checking account will be debited no sooner than the 15th of the following month.

You can update your checking account information any time. To make sure that the new information is used to pay your invoices, please update your account information at least 2 days before the end of your billing cycle (either the end of the month or the 15th of the month). Until we can confirm your account information by making a trial deposit your account won't be used to make automatic payments.

To remove your checking account from your account, see Removing payment information from your account.

Paying by credit card

We accept the following credit cards:

  • Visa

  • MasterCard

  • Discover

  • American Express

Your credit card is usually charged 5 to 7 days after you receive your invoice.

Note: Prepaid cards can't be used to pay your selling fees.

You can update the credit card on file for automatic payments at any time. To ensure that the new information is used for an invoice payment, be sure to update the credit card before the end of your billing cycle (either the end of the month or the 15th of the month). For your payment schedule, see Payment due dates.

You may continue to accrue fees for any listings you have on the site, as well as monthly fees for any active subscriptions such as eBay Stores. Be sure to cancel any subscriptions if you want to close your account.
