Calculated Shipping Costs

If you select calculated shipping in the Sell Your Item form, shipping costs are automatically calculated for your buyer based on the buyer's ZIP Code, the weight of the package, and the type of shipping services offered.

To get an idea of the shipping costs for various services and locations use eBay’s Shipping Calculator.

Step 1: Select calculated shipping by specifying the following:

  • Package type. Select a package type. Learn more about package sizes.

  • Weight of the package. Select the total weight of the item, box, and any packing materials. To enter the weight in pounds and ounces, select “Custom weight.”

  • Irregular. If you are shipping your item using U.S. Postal Service Parcel Post and suspect that the package maybe irregular, select the "Irregular package" check box. Learn more about irregular packages.

  • U. S. shipping services. Select from a list of services from U.S. Postal Service and UPS shipping services, such as U. S. Postal Service Priority Mail and UPS Ground. Learn more about shipping services. To see how shipping services calculate shipping cost, see:

  • Dimensions. Enter the dimensions (length, width, and height) of the package that you're shipping.

  • International shipping service. You can offer to ship your item to up to three international locations and specify a shipping service for each location.

  • Item location. Enter the country, ZIP Code, city, and state that your item is being shipped from.

  • Handling time and cost. Let buyers know the number of days it typically takes you to ship an item after receiving payment. To add a handling cost to your shipping costs, enter an amount in the "Handling cost" field. This amount is not displayed to buyers.

  • Insurance. Select whether you want to offer insurance. Insurance or loss and damage protection is calculated automatically based on the item price.

Note: UPS automatically provides protection against loss or damage up to $100 per package. For UPS shipments, specify the option in case your item sells for over $100.

Step 2: Shipping costs are automatically calculated for the buyer

When you use calculated shipping, a table of shipping rates will appear in the "Shipping and handling" section of your listing.

When buyers enter a ZIP Code or select a country, the shipping calculator automatically determines the shipping costs. Only the shipping service you selected displays. Any handling costs are included in the shipping cost–they are not shown to buyers.

Step 3:  Buyer purchases the item

When the buyer pays for the item, shipping costs are calculated automatically based on the buyer’s ZIP Code. If you’ve specified multiple shipping services, the buyer can select from the list of shipping services you offer.
