Selecting your payment preferences

Before you start selling on eBay, select your payment preferences to let us know how you'll pay your seller fees and how you want to let your buyers pay. You can also set up a payment gateway if you want to accept credit card payments.

Setting up your seller fees payment method

When you create a seller account, you link your seller account to your preferred selling fees payment method. eBay can automatically debit or credit your seller account as you list, make a sale, or need to be reimbursed.

To change your seller fee payment method:
  1. Go to My eBay.

  2. Place your pointer over the Account tab, and then click Seller Account.

  3. In the Payment methods for Seller Fees section, click the Change link for the payment method you want to change.

To get a refund for credits in your seller account, see Requesting a refund of your eBay credit balance.

Setting up your buyer payment preferences

How you set up your buyer payment options depends on each method and what you list. For most categories, you need to offer buyers at least one online payment or merchant credit card option—this is often the fastest and most convenient method for buyers and sellers. Cash isn't allowed for most listings with the exception of the Payment upon pickup option and certain categories.

First things first

Before you set up or change your payment preferences, take a look at Selecting payment methods and our accepted payments policy to choose the options that are best for you.

All electronic payment methods require you to use eBay checkout. When you use checkout and one of the eBay-approved online payment methods, your buyer sees the Pay Now button in their email notification and in the Messages section of My eBay. When the buyer clicks the Pay Now button, selects one of the payment methods you offer, and pays you, your processor handles the payment, you receive notification that you've been paid, and you can ship the item.

Checkout is set up as a default when you create a seller account. To be sure checkout is on:

  1. Go to My eBay.

  2. Place your pointer over the Account tab, and then click Site Preferences.

  3. In the Selling Preferences section, click the Show link next to Payment from buyers.

  4. Click the Edit link.

  5. On the Payment Preferences page, select Use Checkout.

Read more about using checkout.

To register with PayPal and link it to your eBay account:
  1. Click My eBay at the top of most eBay pages.

  2. Click the Account tab.

  3. Click the PayPal Account link on the left side of the page.

  4. Click the Link My PayPal Account button.

  5. Log in to PayPal to finish linking your accounts as directed.

Once you've signed up with PayPal, it appears as an option when you create a listing. When you select PayPal, buyers see it in your listing. You'll also see it in your payment preferences in My eBay.

Note: If you need more information about creating a PayPal account, please contact PayPal for more help.

To register with Skrill or ProPay, and link them to your eBay account:
  1. Go to their registration pages and follow their instructions:

The processors you set up appear as options when you create a listing. When you select those options, buyers see them in your listing.

To change your buyer payment preferences:
  1. Go to My eBay.

  2. Place your pointer over the Account tab, and then click Site Preferences.

  3. In the Selling Preferences section, click the Show link next to Payment from buyers.

  4. Click the Edit link.

  5. On the Payment Preferences page, select or clear your options.

  6. Be sure to select Use Checkout.

  7. Select the payment options you want to offer. For most listings, this can include:

    • PayPal

    • Credit and debit card payments (if you already accept credit cards through your Internet merchant account, have checkout enabled, and have a payment gateway account)

Setting up a payment gateway for your Internet merchant account

If you already accept credit and debit cards through an Internet merchant account, you can use checkout to accept these types of payments once you provide us with your payment gateway account information. Learn more about payment gateways and how they work.

To set up your payment gateway on eBay checkout:
  1. Click My eBay at the top of most eBay pages. You may need to sign in.

  2. Place your pointer over the Account tab, and then click Site Preferences.

  3. In the Selling Preferences section, click the Show link next to Payment from buyers.

  4. Click the Edit link.

  5. On the Payment Preferences page, select Accept credit or debit card payments to your Internet merchant account.

Next, you'll need to enter your payment gateway information.

Note: If you need help finding any of this information, please contact your payment gateway provider.

To enter your payment gateway information:
  1. Choose your payment gateway provider from the drop-down menu at the top of the page.

  2. Enter your Merchant login (sometimes called "gateway login" or "API login ID"). This is the ID that identifies your account at the gateway for transaction processing.

Note: This ID is usually different from the user ID you use to log into your gateway's website.

  3. Enter your Password (sometimes called the "password" or "transaction key").

Note: Usually, this is a password that was generated by the payment gateway for you, not a password that you created.

  4. Depending on the payment gateway you use, you may need to enter a Vendor ID or User ID.

  5. Depending on the payment gateway you use, you may need to enter a Partner ID.

  6. Select the credit cards you'll accept through this payment gateway.

  7. Select your merchant preferences, such as whether you'll require buyer's credit cards to pass Address Verification (AVS) and Card Security Code (CSX/CVV) checks.

  8. Enter the credit card information for a credit card you accept and that's accepted by your gateway. Note: Your credit card won't be charged. We use this information to test that everything works correctly.

  9. Review your information and confirm it is correct.

  10. Click the Submit button.

Once you have your payment gateway account information setup with checkout and enabled in your preferences, buyers have the option of paying you online by credit card.
