Motors Safe Selling Tips

The more you know about your buyers and their previous transactions, the safer you, as a seller will be. You should also do everything possible to ensure your potential buyers have a positive trading experience—greatly increasing your chances of making a successful sale. Below are specific tips you can review to ensure a positive eBay Motors trading experience.

Review eBay's listing policies. These guidelines will help you properly list items.

Review eBay's Prohibited and Restricted Items policy. Particular items of concern on eBay Motors include:

  • Catalytic converters and test pipes

  • Imported and emission non-compliant vehicles

  • Used airbags

  • Lock-picking devices

  • Freon and other refrigerants

  • Government IDs and licenses

  • Stolen property

  • Recalled vehicles, parts, tires and child safety seats

  • VIN plates

  • VIN plate rivets

  • Government vehicle license plates

  • Vehicle titles

Make sure to state rules in the listing regarding what types of bidders you will accept. For example:

  • "No bidders with negative feedback" or

  • New bidders with 0 feedback must contact the seller."

Review your buyer's feedback.

Respond promptly to buyer questions.

Establish a timeframe with your buyer, making it clear how long you will wait for payment, and what type of payment you will accept.

Know your vehicle:

  • Run a title check before listing your vehicle.

  • Make sure that any branded title on the history of the vehicle is appropriately disclosed in the listing description.

  • Provide complete title history. If there was a salvage title in the history, make sure it is disclosed in the listing description.

  • Ensure the appropriate status has been checked on the Sell Your Item (SYI) page (Clear, Salvage, Other).

  • Disclose structural damage and major repairs or replacements to the vehicle that you are listing, including frame, suspension, engine and body alterations and installation of after market parts.

Comply with your state's laws relating to car dealer licensing, as well as the Federal Trade Commission's Used Car Rule if your trading activities meet the definition of a car dealer in your state.

Consider warning buyers in other states that stricter emissions standards may impact their ability to register the vehicle you are selling.

List the exact mileage of the vehicle. If you are unsure of the odometer's accuracy (especially on older or 5-digit odometer vehicles), please make a point to disclose such uncertainties in the listing description.

Visit the web sites of your state and the state of your trading partner to learn of applicable laws. Based upon the physical location of the buyer or the seller, state consumer protection laws may apply to your transaction on eBay Motors and may limit what you can legally sell.

Make sure any liens on the vehicle are disclosed in the listing description.

Provide the VIN number in your listing description. You will attract more legitimate buyers if a member has the ability to conduct their own checks on the vehicle's history.
