Returning an item and receiving a refund for an eBay Buyer Protection case
In this article

Before opening an eBay Buyer Protection case, learn what to do if you don't receive an item or it doesn't match the seller's description.

If you'd like to return an item you bought on eBay, you can use the return process for some items. Learn how to return an item through the managed return process.

If you need to open a case, here's what to expect when you need to return an item and would like a refund.

Returning an item

If you'd like a refund, you'll generally be required to return an item. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Don't send an item back unless the seller or eBay asks you to.

  • Package the item carefully and securely with all parts. The seller must receive the item in the same condition as you received it.

  • When you send the item, you'll need to include tracking information. For items worth $750.00 or more, signature confirmation is required.

Important: If you refuse delivery of an item so you won't have to return it, the item won't be covered by eBay Buyer Protection.

How refunds work for eBay Buyer Protection cases

When a case is decided in your favor, we'll issue you a refund through PayPal, no matter how you paid for the item. PayPal then generally refunds that money to the source of the original funds.

Your refund will be sent to the PayPal email address you used to purchase the item (unless we let you know otherwise). Please allow 3 business days after the case closes for the refund to be processed. For refunds of $1,000.00 or more, please allow 7 business days.

Checking on your refund

You must have a PayPal account to receive a refund.

Here's how to check on your refund:
  1. Go to PayPal and log in.

  2. On the My Account tab, click History.

  3. If you still don't see your refund, select Last Three Months from the drop-down menu on the left.

I can't find my refund

Check to make sure that the PayPal email address you used to buy the item is confirmed with PayPal. If it's not, you'll need to confirm your email address to receive your refund. (For security reasons, PayPal accounts must have a confirmed email address in order to receive funds.)

If you still don't have your refund in your PayPal account:

Check that the email address registered to eBay has been added to your PayPal account. Once your eBay email address has been added, make sure the email address is also confirmed on PayPal.
If you have more than one PayPal account, check all accounts for your refund. If you paid with PayPal, the refund will be issued to the same email address in your PayPal account that was used to pay for the item.
