The first step to fire safety is recognizing potential hazards in your home. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommends practical tips to help prevent fires and reduce risk. At the top of the list is making sure your alarms are properly installed and fully functional. Here are a few key measures to get started:

    •    Install working smoke alarms on every level of your house. Make sure to place them inside each bedroom and outside all sleeping areas.
    •    Replace smoke alarm batteries every year or as required
    •    Stay alert in the kitchen when cooking. Make sure to keep an eye on your stove.
    •    Plan an escape route if there is a fire in your home and practice it with your family
    •    Check the age of your smoke alarms and replace any that are over 10 years old, as their effectiveness can decline with time
