Carbon monoxide poisoning from consumer products causes over 200 deaths in the U.S. each year, unrelated to fires. Here are some tips to help minimize safety risks according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC):
• Keep generators outside, at least 20 feet away with the exhaust facing away from your home. Do not use portable generators inside homes or garages, even with open doors and windows.
• Make sure battery-operated CO alarms, or CO alarms with battery backup, are on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas. Interconnected CO alarms are highly recommended.
• Headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, sleepiness, and confusion can be symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning. If you suspect this, go outdoors to breathe fresh air and call 911 immediately.
