The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) outlines the safety risks associated with products for babies and children. To help keep your home safe, learn the recommended safety guidance for baby products.
Tips for safer baby sleep
To create a safer sleep environment for babies:
• Check your crib, bassinet, play yard, or bedside sleeper if they meet federal requirements
• Limit bedding in a crib, bassinet, or play yard to a single fitted sheet.
• Do not add pillows, weighted blankets, or swaddles to your baby’s sleep space. This guidance is based on information from the Centers for Disease Control and the National Institutes for Health. Please visit CDC.gov and NIH.gov for more information.
• Make sure to place your baby on their back
• If your baby falls asleep somewhere else, move them to a safe, approved sleep space
• Never leave your baby unsupervised in products not designed for infant sleep. Rockers, gliders, soothers, swings, and other inclined products with an angle greater than 10° are not recommended.
• Look out for recalls at SaferProducts.gov, and receive recall notifications at CPSC.gov

Toys
The CPSC provides the following warnings for when toys are used by children:
• Make sure to read and follow the age guidance and safety information on the toy packaging. Age labels are required if the toy is a choking hazard for children under 3 years old.
• Ensure that children wear appropriate safety gear, such as helmets, whenever they use scooters or other riding toys
• Small balls and toys with small parts should be kept away from children younger than age 3. Additionally, deflated balloons should be kept away from children younger than age 8.
• Throw away plastic wrappings or packaging materials that come with newly opened toys

Water beads
Water beads are made of super absorbent polymer and can grow 100x their original size when submerged in water. They are seen in craft kits and act as sensory tools for kids with developmental disabilities. The CPSC provides the following warnings related to water beads:
• Keep water beads away from children
• Store them in a secure container and location
• Since they can easily scatter, roll, and become lost, it is best to remove them from your home
For emergencies, call the 24-hour National Poison Help Line at 1-800-222-1222. Visit the CPSC Water Beads Safety Education Center for more information.

Magnets
High-powered magnets are considered a safety risk for kids, due to reports of ingestion and inhalation that lead to fatal injuries. Swallowing two or more magnets can cause them to stick together inside the body, often requiring surgery. Surgery may also be needed to repair damage to the stomach or intestines. If your child is suspected to have swallowed magnets:
• Seek immediate medical attention
• Keep an eye out for symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea
• Stay alert, as multiple magnetic pieces in X-rays may appear as a single object
