Maximize your cash by selling your PC yourself

The PC Selling Zone makes selling your laptop or desktop PC on eBay easier than ever. However, in order to sell it yourself you must be registered to sell on eBay. If you are not yet registered to sell, you may either Register to Sell now or you may consider the options provided in the Sell It for Me area.

You may use as many or as few of the following tools as you need in order to list and ship your PC:
What have I got?Back to Top

Brought to you by PC World, the PC Profiler will give you a detailed description of your PC automatically. Simply click on the What have I got? link and then on the PC World PC Profiler link, follow the simple instructions to get your free profile, then use this information to write a complete listing.

Please note that the PC you wish to sell must be online in order for this tool to work. If the PC you want to sell is not online, you may wish to use the. If neither of these tools works for you, the What have I got? page also provides some tips for determining the core information about your PC manually.

Also note that the first version of this tool does not work with Apple Macintosh products. We are working to provide a solution for Apple computers and hope to offer one soon.

How much can I get?Back to Top

Many people wonder how much they can really get for their old PCs. Although eBay cannot predict what price you will actually get for your computer, we can provide you some information about recent selling prices for systems similar to yours. Please note that this information only shows what others have received for their PCs and in no way ensures that you will achieve the same price.

Very importantly, we do recommend that you consider your starting price very carefully if you elect to list your PC as an auction, and even more carefully if you wish to set a Buy It Now price. Often starting an auction with a low price will create bidding activity that can win higher prices than the same auction that was set at a starting price that might be too high to attract bidders.

Listing AssistantBack to Top

Brought to you by Blancco, the Listing Assistant can be a very convenient tool for listing your PC. In order to determine if you can use this tool, answer the following question:

Is the PC you are using right now the same one that you plan to sell?
  • If yes, this PC must have a floppy disk drive in order to use Listing Assistant. Also, you will need 2 formatted diskettes.
  • If no, then in order to use Listing Assistant you must have a floppy disk drive on both the system you are using right now and the system you are planning to sell. Again, you will need 2 formatted diskettes.
  • If neither of the two scenarios above work for you, you can still get core information about your PC by following the tips provided on the What have I got? page.
The Listing Assistant will take a detailed inventory of your PC for sale and then step you through a simplified process for listing your PC for sale. Note: you will still need to take a picture of your PC, but many of the other listing steps have been automated or simplified.

What about my data?Back to Top

It is important to protect your personal data, which means securely erasing it before selling your PC. Blancco has provided Data Cleaner, a sophisticated tool that is very easy to use. To determine if you can use this tool, please answer the following question (if you have already answered this question for the Listing Assistant, the same answer applies):

Is the PC you are using right now the same one that you plan to sell?
  • If yes, this PC must have a floppy disk drive in order to use Data Cleaner. Also, you will need 1 formatted diskette.
  • If no, then in order to use Listing Assistant you must have a floppy disk drive on both the system you are using right now and the system you are planning to sell. Again, you will need 1 formatted diskette.

I need a box!Back to Top

OnePak has produced a unique shipping kit that secures your laptop or desktop computer. The kit comes with a thick plastic insert that inflates to a perfect size for most PC models and leaves room for battery packs, keyboards, mouses, etc. It also comes with a CD-ROM that talks you through the easy steps to assemble the box.

You will need to purchase the shipping kit, but it costs only a fraction of what you would be charged to have a packaging service do it. In addition, you can then go to eBay's Shipping Center to conveniently handle the postage from your own home.
