I've gotten some great deals on eBay, but nothing like what I got in 1999. It started with a question from a woman in CA about an item I was selling. This woman, Allison Dafferner, is now among my dearest of friends. Over the years, we've seen each other through some wonderful times and some tough times, but we had never met. We had shared e-mails, phone calls, gifts, but never hugs. This changed in July 2004. I was diagnosed with a brain tumor. My research into treatment options led me to LA. Yes, the best place in the country for my surgery was a mere hour from Alli. We flew to CA on 7/27 and spent the next two nights awaiting surgery at the Dafferner home. Alli, and her husband Skee, opened their home and their lives to us. They made sure this Midwest girl saw the ocean and Rodeo Drive. Alli has always been able to make me laugh, and these two days were no exception. She made me momentarily forget why I was there. It was exactly what I needed. My tumor is now gone. I lost my hearing in my left ear and I have some temporary facial paralysis, but I made it through. Thank you Alli for helping me through this, and thank you eBay for bringing us together. Please help us write the next chapter of our story.

My daughter Libbie was only 6 months old when she was diagnosed with leukemia in 1999. In 2002 she underwent a bone marrow transplant. She came through this as only Libbie could, with great resolve and strength that had been apparent to anyone who knew her since the day she was born. I bought on eBay and watched the "boutique" clothing auctions and before I knew it was selling with a group of incredible women called the "StitchinChicks". Libbie relapsed shortly after transplant. I continued to sew and sell on eBay and it became a needed source of income for us as we continued to seek medical help. Weekly hospital trips from Austin to Houston connected us to some very special eBay sellers, Lark and Allie. Their daughters were close in age to Libbie and they would visit us at the hospital. It was clear we would remain close friends. On 3/3/04 Lark ran a fund raiser auction to help us with mounting medical bills. Hoping she could raise $500, she listed. Throughout the next few weeks ~360 unsolicited auctions would raise over $16,000 in Libbie's name. Buyers and sellers came together to participate and learned about Libbie's story and what an incredible inspiration a 5 year old girl could be. On Good Friday, 4-9-04, Libbie died very suddenly. The money that these selfless sellers raised paid for Libbie's funeral. We were able to put Libbie to rest without a thought about how we would pay for it.

Proud to be an American! Earlier this summer, my cousin - who was serving in Iraq - emailed me to ask me to send him two sets of twin size sheets as they only had metal cots and a three-inch foam mattress. As it was the weekend and late at night, I couldn't go to a store - so I got on eBay and looked for twin sheet sets which were closing right away. I won an auction and asked the seller to ship it to my cousin's APO address and when she found out why - she shipped it for free and wouldn't take any money for the sheets either. The next day, I told another seller about it and she jumped on the bandwagon - sent the 2nd set of sheets and got all her friends at work to send other things to his whole group. They got a nice email from his commanding officer and my cousin was so moved by the kindness of strangers he said it made him feel better about being there. I am so proud to be an American!

After 9/11 a US burial flag was up for auction on eBay. At the time, you could not buy an American flag anywhere. I put a bid in for the item and was the winner. As I corresponded with the seller, I learned the flag was that of her father, presented to her mother at the time of his passing. Her dad was a veteran and a proud American. She said that the money she raised from the sale of the flag would be sent to the firemen in New York. She mentioned her father would have wanted it that way. When the flag arrived at my home, I promptly unfolded it and hung it out on our flagpole. I explained to my kids the history of the flag. As we sat and watched the flag, my son asked why I had made the purchase. It didn't seem for us to have their family's flag, he had said. Almost at once, I realized he was right. The next day, we refolded the flag and sent it home. I told the seller that it was an honor to have her father's flag fly over our house for that one day. She was elated; admitting her family terribly missed the flag that once rested on their fireplace mantle. I am grateful to my son for correctly teaching me that some things in life are priceless. In 1997, I started a Pilot Program with the Department of Education teaching All-Media Art to Special Population Adults (blind, deaf, mentally challenged). Despite its huge success, budget cuts earmarked the program's elimination. Because of the overwhelming support of the eBay Community, through the auctioning of students' projects the program was not only saved but expanded. Equally important, however, was the direct impact in the lives of each individual who contributed a "masterpiece". The feeling of self-worth instilled when the "artists'" works were purchased can not be expressed in words or dollars. People who had long believed their lives were meaningless now had purpose. Through a twist of fate, I was left paralyzed in a near-fatal car accident. I now find myself drawing from the lessons I learned as a teacher of the disabled, as well as the support of the eBay community. Through the unparalleled support network of the eBay community, once my Physical Therapy is complete, I know I can count on the generosity and kindness of the eBay family to continue to support my dreams of keeping "The Very Special Arts" program alive. I now share the unique perspective of my former students that art comes in many different visions. The sense of pride I have in belonging to the largest support network on Earth has embedded in me that through a shared vision, DREAMS CAN BECOME REALITIES. Thank you eBayers for your continued support.

After having our son Adam (by birth), we decided to complete our family and adopt a little girl. We have a sister-in-law that was adopted from Korea and it was a beautiful story that inspired many. We chose the same agency (founded to bring unwanted kids to the US after the Korean War) and started the lengthy, invasive process. Money had nothing to do with our decision, but it became a factor over the 2-year process. We were falling short with all the expenses for the adoption. With the economy like it has been, we wondered how we were going to pull it off. I started selling whatever I could to raise money. Friends and family started donating stuff to sell. I had stuff stacked up all over my kitchen! When I posted our stuff on eBay I would state in the description about our little girl and the response was so amazing! I got so many emails from people wishing us well! It was extremely touching. We made so many friends. It is wonderful how good people are and how they come together to help family, friends, and even strangers in a time of need. We raised enough money and brought our baby girl home. Hanna is home forever and we are touched by all the help to get her here!! Thank you everyone that helped and thank you eBay for the ability to meet everyone!

Dear eBay, I know you began your company based on the belief that most people in the world are good. Well, I just met one of the best and I wanted to share my experience with you. Our six-year old son was recently diagnosed with Leukemia and is having a hard time adjusting to all the changes in his life. After being diagnosed Alexander discovered the joys of magic and we found that it brought him happiness during his long hospital stays. While searching for "magic tricks" on eBay, I stumbled across Mike Faustine of Ghoulchaser Magic I read his "About Me" page and thought he sounded approachable. I emailed him, asking him questions about magic tricks that our son could perform, since Alexander's balance and grip are weak due to the chemotherapy. Not only did Mr. Faustine give us advice (via email), he sent our son a "real" magic hat overflowing with magic tricks that he could do himself! He also sent a kind note of encouragement and has followed up with us about how our son is doing. So, eBay, yes, there are good people out there and we would wholeheartedly nominate as an example of Mike Faustine for "The Power of All of Us.". He is a one-of-a-kind, extremely kind person. We need more like him on eBay!

eBay provided no less than a Christmas miracle for me last year. I lost my father in 2003. In his younger years, he had been a professional musician, playing and singing with the country western band "Roy Hall and His Blue Ridge Entertainers". All of the records that our family had were lost in a house fire when I was a child. While surfing on eBay last December, I discovered one of the records that my dad had been on. It was "Don't Let Your Sweet Die" on Bluebird label. After a furious last second bid-out ended, I had lost. Although the record was a priceless treasure to me, my funds were very low and I had not been able to bid as much as I had wanted. I was heartbroken, but still determined to have that treasure. I emailed the winning bidder and told him my story and asked if he would consider selling the record to me. I wanted to give it to my oldest son for Christmas. I waited for a few days and did not receive a reply. I deleted it from "my eBay" and went on, although still heartbroken. Two days before Christmas, a package arrived. I opened it and discovered a BEAUTIFUL copy of a nearly sixty-year-old record, still in its original sleeve. I emailed the seller and asked who I needed to pay. I have yet to receive a reply.

Imagine!! Microscopes from eBay help equip a new African medical school! As an amateur French hornist, vintage radio enthusiast, and tinkerer, I've found eBay a treasure trove of fine items in need of restoration. A friend who teaches music told me of the shortage of instruments in local public schools so some "eBay" horns were donated once repaired. One musician to whom I had sold a horn donated an extra mouthpiece when he learned it would go to a needy student. At a graduation party this past spring my wife and I learned that their daughter planned to go to medical school. We decided to give her a microscope and found a fine one on eBay. A physician by profession, I have visited medical facilities in Africa. While raising funds and equipment for them, I learned that a colleague was starting the first medical school in Tanzania. Microscopes were needed so I acquired some fine older instruments from eBay and sent them on after cleaning and repair. When I told several eBay sellers of my project, they reduced the shipping charges and in some cases made donations of additional items. One eBay "pen pal" sent several links to resources and publications. Teaching instruments have also been donated to needy local and Native American grade schools. The vast resources of eBay have thus enabled me to get wonderful things, befriend great people, and return to the World community some of the great bounty with which I have been blessed.

On small, isolated Lopez Island located off the northwest coast of America, we say 'Bravo! Bravo! to eBay, the community that magically dressed and transformed every child in our Community Shakespeare Company this season, helping them give the best performance of their young lives. Dazzling, thanks to eBay, the youngsters, age 7-17, took their bows to thundering applause. We share the ovation with eBay, the community that makes magic happen! On Lopez Island, parents, teachers, neighbors and friends volunteer in childrens' productions. Here, trust and honesty are woven tightly into the fabric of our lives. My experience on eBay--as volunteer costume designer buying garments to transform into 15th Century costumes-- was the same. On eBay, there are no borders, no political divisiveness. People are trustworthy and honest, each seller courteous and friendly. Because we are so remote (no malls, no movies, not even a stoplight) I relied in past years on a "garage sale approach" to costuming. Now we reach beyond boundaries of sea, sky and storm, beyond our isolation. More than 200 wins on eBay dressed our young actors regally as kings, queens, lords and princesses, clowns and maids, servants and merchants. Children learn more than their lines when they perform Shakespeare. They learn self-confidence and interdependence. They learn new ways to believe in themselves, on stage and off. This year they learned that the power of community has no boundaries. Our final bow is to eBay, the world's best stage, audience and community!

Firefighters to the Rescue - even on eBay! My story is one of incredible dedication and goodwill by three special eBayers - 2 firefighters in Davenport, Iowa and one woman in Georgia. My son Dave is a firefighter in Colorado. My Dad, who died when Dave was 3 months old, was also a firefighter, in Davenport, Iowa, in the early 1950s. It was so important to my son to learn of his Grandfather's service. So, I put a notice on eBay, searching for any information on the Davenport Fire Department in the early 1950s. Two firefighters, one retired from the Department, and one soon to be retired, contacted me. One, Leon Rowell, researched records in the department and sent my Dad's service record, badge number, and rank. The other, Steve Cochran, sent a Department patch and photocopies of old patches used during that time. Both continue to search for more information to this day. And a woman, whose name I have unfortunately lost, sent an old Davenport newspaper showing a photo of a huge fire that I knew my Dad to be on. I'm sure one of the firefighters in the photo is my Dad! These good people initiated these searches solely for the satisfaction of helping my son get to know his Grandpa better. My son now has proof that he is a 2nd generation firefighter and I know my Dad would be proud of him and of the "brothers" who helped keep him alive in my son's eyes.

I've been an eBay member for over five years, I've had my most memorable experience in the past few weeks. One of my customers purchased several auctions from me and was interested in purchasing more talavera tiles. She had emailed me several times regarding a large order she wanted to place. Several days passed and I did not hear from her. So I emailed her and she responded that her eight year old son had been hit and killed by a drunk driver as he rode home on his bike with his dad from his baseball game. I was shocked and sad upon hearing this news; I could not imagine her grief or pain. These last few days we have exchanged words, thoughts, religious beliefs, politics, past experiences and moments that have touched or changed our lives. eBay has not only become an online place to conduct business, it has also become a place where we can find comfort or share our stories and yes, even try to heal each other. "The power of all of us", means to me that two people, thousands of miles away from each other, who have never met, can find comfort and meaning in our lives simply by doing business and exchanging words of comfort and experience. Should I win, and with her permission, I would like to offer DeeDee half in honor of her son.

I've been buying/selling on eBay since 1999. Recently I decided to list for sale the camera that I used in the Vietnam War, as a combat correspondent for the U.S. Army and the civilian press. I included in my listing a lengthy essay explaining the provenance of this camera and even included therein a "link" to a photo album showing many photographs which I had taken with this camera in combat, and which were subsequently published in newspapers and news magazines around the world. (listing was eBay # 3844956831). The listing generated over 2,700 "hits" as well as - more importantly to me - dozens of personal emails from people thanking me for my service to my country. I sold the camera but the important result to me of this auction was the outpouring of honest expressions of gratitude and acknowledgement of my service during the war - something that so many of we veterans of that particular war never received at the time. I made many new friends and "pen pals" as a result of this auction - and the entire experience served to help me unburden myself of many of the "ghosts" from those dark days. It was truly an emotional and highly gratifying experience.

In 2004, I came across an auction that was listing two 1965 postcard letters from Stan Lee (Marvel Comics God) to a young Jerry Weist: He's a famous author and dealer of comic books. I saw that Jerry was the only bidder, his username is "Jerry Weist", and I e-mailed him and asked how these came into this dealer's possession. He didn't know, probably accidentally included in a comic book trade long ago, but he was excited and was eager to reclaim them. I watched this auction and in the last few seconds, Jerry was outbid. Outbid??? I mean, the letter was personalized to him, so why would anyone even dare to bid on his childhood mementos? Jerry was pretty crushed to say the least. Some weeks later, this buyer asked me a question about my "About Me" page, and I was able to make a trade for one of the two letters. I e-mailed Jerry with the good news and sent it to him for free. He was so touched by the gesture from a stranger that he sent me an autographed copy of his latest book. He also helped me obtain a commission from a famous comic book artist that I would never have been able to get. Helping someone reclaim a piece of their past, PRICELESS, but for everything else there's PayPal.

It's been a bleak season here in Florida. I live in Palm Bay (central east coast). We were hit hard by Hurricane Frances and harder by Jeanne. My husband and I have been selling on eBay 5+ years which allows me to stay home with our 2 wonderful children. When Frances was looming, we heeded the warnings and prepared to evacuate and come home to no power. That meant our eBay e-mails would not get answered and orders would be put on hold. We composed an automatic response on our e-mail to tell folks we were off to "hunker down" and explain why things were at a stand still. The Lord blessed us, as our house is mostly in tact and our eBay inventory is safe. We did lose power. A total of 11.5 hot, sticky days to be exact. Where did all this leave our faithful eBay customers? I have to admit, I dreaded the thought of negative feedback and angry e-mails. I had a lump in my throat when we could finally power up the computer. As we checked feedback and sifted through e-mails, I was overjoyed. The eBay community showed us bountiful grace and mercy. E-mails from everywhere offered well-wishes and prayers. Our heroes? Power, utility and relief crews who have come from far and wide and then stayed. Our Heroes? You, our faithful eBay community. You were there to support us in our time of need. What more could we ask for? Thank You, Thank You.

I am the youngest of 5 children who grew up in Fair Lawn, New Jersey during the 1970's. My siblings told me that when they grew up in the late 1950's that my father built them an 'awesome' Lionel train set in our basement. In the late 1970's my mother passed away and my father and I built a train set under the Christmas tree. In 2001, I won an auction on eBay for a toy train. The eBay members name is "NYCNUT". My name is "Douglas EMOND" and NYCNUT's name is "Emery EMOND; it is not a common last name. Even more interesting was that EMERY EMOND was my great grand father's name. My father had explained to me that it was a family tradition to name children with first names beginning with the letter "E". For example my brother, my father and my grand father are named "Eugene Emond". I wrote to Emery about my family story and that I grew up in Fair Lawn and had a father named Eugene. The email that NYCNUT sent me back began with "Hello Cousin". But the best part of the story was how he got into the toy train hobby. He explained to me that when he was young in the 1950's, his dad would take him to a cousin's house in Fair Lawn New Jersey to play with an 'awesome Lionel train set' in the basement.

When I lost my father this past April, I was devastated. To find something to do I began making IN MEMORY OF bracelets with a picture frame charm to give to my mom and my dad's sisters and for me to wear. People starting saying they were so beautiful and that I should sell a few on eBay. I had never done anything on eBay, but I decided to try it. It has turned into a full time business. The bonus has been all the great friendships I have found in the eBay members. The heartwarming letters that I receive from my customers are so beautiful. It seems that everybody was looking for a new way to keep their loved one's memory close to them at all times. Members have even suggested color awareness ribbons to be added to the bracelets to show support for what disease took their loved one from them. I believe that a piece of my father's memory is in each item I make. My hope was that these items would help others who were grieving, as I was. Instead, these items have done way more than that. Many of my customers and I have formed a mini support group to each other as we travel down our separate grieving paths. eBay is a wonderful community of caring and loving people. I am so glad I found it and I thank my dad everyday for the success I have achieved in helping others.

My story is about human kindness and giving. Giving that transcends transactions, and financial gain. It is a story about a caring eBay member who deeply cares about disabled individuals. The story begins with a search on eBay for Fisher Price stereo needles for my severely disabled daughter. FP discontinued production of the phonograph and subsequently the needles for the phonographs. My daughter, lives to play records. She spends her entire day listening to her records and her limited world is enhanced, no illuminated by music from her FP phononograph. It is her life! I contacted FP and discovered needles were no longer available. I panicked and then conducted a search on eBay, finding only one seller selling needles. I was desperate to purchase the needles and made a high bid to secure the priceless needle. Upon winning the auction, I contacted the seller and told him why I needed the needle so desperately. When my order arrived it did not include one needle but six! I was overcome with joy and emotion. I discovered that the seller volunteers, helping disabled people. He assured me that he would send more needles when she ran out. He has done that one more time asking for no compensation, not even postage. If it were not for eBay, and a generous eBay member, my daughter, who lives to play her records would be living in a world without the music that gives her a reason to live.

I met a wonderful Oklahoma lady who was selling Beanie Babies on eBay, using the proceeds to fund the transportation costs for women on assistance from the state by taking classes to better themselves. But there was no state funding to get them to class. She felt that was not good enough, so to make getting on their feet easier, she decided to sell her personal Beanies and raise the money needed for bus passes. Touched by her efforts, I sent her extra Beanies. Whenever I sold a Beanie, I would tell my eBay buyers about her, give them her address, and many helped by sending Beanies. I mentioned it to sellers when I won an auction, and many of them sent them to her also. She started receiving so many, without any idea of how they were coming her way. She finally found out it was me, what a fun surprise for her. She collected so many Beanies that she organized a one day sale at her workplace. I believe she rose over $1500 from that sale and her eBay auctions, and provided many, many bus passes for those who needed it badly. She's a wonderful, giving woman who thinks of others above herself. I hope I get to meet my online friend in person one day. Thank you to the generous people who sent her Beanies to help her realize her dream.

I have a story to share about a member of the eBay community who will always have a special place in my heart. I was selling a large amount of toys and began chatting with one of my buyers through email. I learned that he collected something I was hoping to find for an important person in my life. This buyer collected vintage GI Joe figures and I was hoping to replace a doll that my older brother had as a child. My buyer helped me figure out which doll I would be searching for. The buyer received his items and the transaction was complete, or so I thought. A week later I received a package in the mail from that very buyer. I thought he was returning an item he didn't like. Panicked, I opened the box. Much to my surprise, inside was the GI Joe doll that I was searching for. He sent the doll free of charge from his own collection. I emailed him right away to say thank you. A total stranger, known only through email touched my heart forever. I am reminded of my eBay moment each time I visit my brother where the GI Joe is displayed on a shelf in his home. I am also reminded that people are good, everyone has time to make someone else's life brighter and small, unexpected surprises are what life is all about.

The most dreaded diagnosis a woman fears was pronounced upon me in 2000- BREAST CANCER! I underwent bilateral mastectomies, chemotherapy and a full course of radiation. I had complications at every turn of therapy. I lost in addition to my hair, eyebrows, 56 pounds, nearly all my strength and stamina and certainly most of my dignity. I spent the small amount of energy I had searching for treasures on eBay. I had such an overwhelming need to look feminine and pretty during those arduous days. I found such beautiful and exquisite jewelry worldwide that uplifted my spirits and gave me just about the only joy I felt in those dark days. I wore with pride and majesty the largest earrings from eBay that I would have never dared to before. I received compliments. Every eBay Seller I contacted and explained what was going on with me was so thoughtful, kind and generous to me. Their emails to me were very uplifting and much appreciated. They are the biggest-hearted people I have ever dealt with. I owe the eBay community a huge debt of gratitude for their part in my recovery. They are a true example of The Power of ALL of US and how we can impact each others' lives with goodness and kind, thoughtful words, deeds and gestures. I am living proof that philosophy worked for my survival. Long Live eBay!

Not long after I joined eBay, I won an auction for a rare antique Conn cornet (a type of musical instrument.) The under bidder for that auction contacted me to congratulate me and to say how disappointed he was about losing the cornet, which he wanted very much. We struck up an online friendship. He'd communicated with a number of other like-minded cornet collectors. We all started a loose network, and ultimately decided to form an informal collectors' organization, "The Cornet Conspiracy". Our membership includes a Broadway trumpeter, a nationally known museum curator, an internationally renowned evolutionary anthropologist, a music store owner, several nationally noted professional musicians, some of the nation's best-known instrument repair craftsmen, and noted authorities on the subject of antique brass instruments, as well as those of us who simply have a love for the brass instruments of yesteryear. We've had 4 annual meetings, in regions of the country with music-industry attractions of interest to our ever-growing membership. We've brought together some of the nation's most advanced brass instrument collectors and enthusiasts in friendship. We eagerly anticipate our annual gathering and the comradeship we share through our common interest! All because of eBay! (Photo shows members of the Cornet Conspiracy in Elkhart, Indiana, summer 2004, after performing a serenade (on pre-1900 Conn band instruments) at the grave of Col. Charles G. Conn, Civil War veteran and father of the American band instrument industry.)

When I became legally blind, I felt my books mocking me with tales of exotic travel, romance and mystery in a print I could no longer read. Then I found eBay. As I sold off my collection, I felt as if I was sending each book to a new friend. I bought large print books and received so much more. It wasn't just a sale, it was a hello here, a recipe there, holiday greetings and birthday emails. Buyers and sellers as friends, as family. I truly believe eBay saved my sanity then. Before macular degeneration struck, I'd jump in my car to visit friends. Now, I jump on the net and visit my eBay community. It's a way to get away without endangering the unsuspecting driving public! With eBay I can reach distances, personalities and a global market I never knew existed. One of my first sales, a civil war oration, went to a man who was so excited to receive the book. His ancestor had been at the speech that day. It was then that I knew I could still make an impact on another human being, even in such a small way as to provide a book. The Power of Us helped me see a future, when I wasn't seeing much else. So eBay, you are what you are, a fair market venue interconnected with global lives that forms a very special family for us all.

I had to sell a beautiful treasure, a heart shaped diamond ring that my husband got me. He was out of work and as the sole provider for our family we were struggling terribly. It broke my heart to do it, but it had to be done. A wonderful lady named Yvonne contacted me with questions and was the kindest lady I ever talked to on eBay. She was looking for an engagement ring to buy for her daughter because she had lost hers and they couldn't afford to get another one. So Yvonne bid and won my ring. Afterwards I came to find out that she is a sister of mine in the faith and she lovingly won my ring to help my struggling family as well as to do a kindness for her daughter. I was also very touched to hear her story of how she narrowly survived the falling Towers of 911. My little heart shaped ring has joined the hearts of 2 strangers and we now have a friendship beyond imagination. She is so important to me and my family and we both feel so blessed to have met by chance the way we did. How happy I am to know that the ring which I had to sacrifice is exactly where it was always meant to be, not on my finger, but on the finger of a friend. Thank you eBay!

A golden glimmer peeked from a rack of clothing at yet another estate sale. I was in search of treasures to sell on eBay! The glimmer? A gorgeous East Indian outfit - pale beige skirt with yards of silky fabric, a scarf in gold with bangles, a beaded blouse. I listed this beauty. After active bidding, the winner emerged, a belly dancer! A week later, the winner emailed that there were light stains that would prevent her from using the outfit under the glare of stage lighting. I was horrified that I had not noticed and offered a refund. We exchanged refund for dress. I took the dress to the cleaners and they tried to remove stains. An email then arrived from a woman who had lost the auction. She wanted the dress for her wedding! I explained the problem, sent more photos but she needed to see the dress. I decided to trust her and mailed the dress to her. She loved it, had a glorious wedding, and time passed. We had not settled on a price. I told her to send what she felt. After her honeymoon, she sent a generous amount. I donated the money to a student at my school who could not afford to go to Woodleaf, an environmental camp. This child had never been on a trip in his life. eBay connected a school teacher, a belly dancer, a bride and a boy waiting for his chance to go to camp! How about that?
