| Now 40% to 50% of our sales are international. It's very easy to ship overseas and it doubles our business automatically. To make things easier on our international customers, we write shipping information in a couple of languages.
"We've developed such a following overseas," says Deming, "that we've been contacted by companies in Japan and Australia who want to distribute our products to retail stores there-and they found us through our sales on eBay! The only advertising we do ourselves is on eBay-for a couple of dollars, we get what is in effect a print ad going worldwide for our products. But now our new distributors will be paying for advertising on our behalf-including a magazine ad campaign featuring Grammy-nominated Native American singer Jana for our products in Australia."
eBay helps Deming create the life she loves
"Everyone has a different measure of success: money is not always the key. Although, I make more annually then I did as a top level treasury economist. The big perk for me of running my own business is that I own my time and no longer sit in a cube 10 hours a day, five days a week: mentally it is a huge relief.

"Another perk I hadn't realized was when my husband got a great new job opportunity out-of-state in Colorado. Well, with eBay all I had to do was change my personal information to reflect our new Denver address. Voilà! No stress looking for a new job in a new state and an unknown market-move completed, I kept my job and if he gets a great new opportunity in Hawaii or Paris, I'm ready to go!"
eBay has allowed Deming, a diplomat's daughter who has lived around the world, to become an international skin-care diva while living wherever she wants. "With eBay I was able to start a business right away without all the burdensome restrictions entrepreneurs faced before eBay was around. Living in Oklahoma, I would never have been able to be so successful if eBay had not existed. Even if I had the money to open a brick-and-mortar shop, no one would have come in to buy: my target market lives in large cities in Europe, Japan and the U.S., and not in the Midwest. With eBay, proximity was moot. I was ready and able to sell to my target market from the first day I posted an Auction." |
