Helpful tips and guidelines for buying sports memorabilia on eBay:
- A Certificate of Authenticity (COA) does not necessarily mean the item is authentic. Check to see who issued the COA and make sure it was either issued by an authenticator with industry credibility, or an entity that has a proven track record of experience and integrity.
- Check the seller's feedback rating. While having a lower rating is not bad, be careful as to the ratio of negatives to total feedback (should be around 96-100%).
- Make sure there is a detailed scan showing the item and preferably the proof of authenticity.
- Don't be scared to send a question to the seller requesting a more in-depth description of the item and how the seller came to possess it.
- Make sure that you are comfortable with the "source"
- Watch out for "reprints" of autographs. Sellers may sell reproductions of original autographs, but are required to disclose that they are reprints. Read the descriptions closely. There are many names for reprinted autographs on photos, such as "print" or "copy". Read the descriptions closely.
- Do Research! Be familiar with how the athlete signs, if he/she is licensed to only one company, what the autograph should look like, etc.
- If an item looks too good to be true, it probably is
As part of ongoing efforts to continually improve the trading environment for sports memorabilia, eBay has created "Authenticator Pre-Certified"-a category created specifically for memorabilia sold with proof of authenticity from specific industry-recognized authenticators.
