Why is eBay offering warranties?
A trusted buying experience is one of the most important things shoppers look for when making purchase decisions—particularly for more expensive items. While the eBay Buyer Protection program will cover buyers if there's a problem with the purchase of an item, buyers currently are not covered if the item breaks or is accidentally damaged outside of any applicable manufacturer warranty period. Offering buyers extended warranties on products purchased on eBay is another way we're helping give buyers peace of mind when shopping on eBay.
Why is eBay offering warranties from both SquareTrade and Geek Squad?
In an effort to expand the warranty offering on eBay, buyers can now choose between two warranty providers in select Electronics categories. Both SquareTrade and Geek Squad are leading providers of warranties and are well recognized names.
What will a buyer see when they're shopping for electrical home or garden appliances on eBay?
Only SquareTrade warranties are currently offered on appliances in the Home & Garden category at this time. Warranties from both SquareTrade and Geek Squad are offered in select Electronics categories. Buyers will see an offer to add a warranty to their purchase along with different coverage options.
Will it be clear to buyers that they're not purchasing the warranty from the seller but directly from SquareTrade or Geek Squad?
Yes. The provider name will be displayed in front of the plan as the buyer is selecting a warranty. Once the warranty has been placed in the cart, the full plan name, including selected provider will be displayed clearly showing that the provider is either SquareTrade or Geek Squad. All post-transaction documentation and communication with the buyer will come directly from the relevant vendor.
How do I qualify to have warranties on eBay offered on my listings?
There's no action required. Warranties will be featured on listings that meet the following criteria:
- Items in eligible Electronics and Home & Garden categories on eBay.com
- Below standard and have at least 20 feedback
- All item conditions with the exception of “for parts” listings
- All selling formats except classifieds
- All items with a selling price of $40 or higher
Why aren't warranties on eBay offered in all categories?
We are currently offering warranties in Electronics and Home & Garden based on overwhelming feedback from our buyers. In the future, we plan to expand this program to even more categories.
Do SquareTrade and Geek Squad warranties cover vintage items?
No, neither SquareTrade nor Geek Squad warranties do not cover vintage items. In the event that a warranty is offered on a vintage item in error, a full refund of the purchase price for the warranty will be offered to the buyer.
Are all items eligible for warranties?
Warranty eligibility of each listing is determined by a number of factors – price, condition, category. eBay will automatically associate the eligible warranty with each listing.
Are SquareTrade or Geek Squad warranties on eBay available to International buyers?
SquareTrade warranties on eBay are available to residents of the US and Canada. Geek Squad warranties are only available to residents of the US.
Are warranties on eBay valid in all states?
Geek Squad warranties are only valid in the United States. SquareTrade Warranties on eBay are valid nationwide in both the US and Canada. They are also valid for APO and FPO addresses, and Puerto Rico.
If buyers purchase an item on eBay along with a SquareTrade or Geek Squad warranty then want to sell the item later, is the warranty transferable to the new owner?
Yes, when you sell an item that is covered by a SquareTrade or Geek Squad warranty to a buyer in the US, and in the case of SquareTrade that includes Canada, any coverage originally purchased with the item is still in effect and fully transferable.
I already offer warranties on the items I sell, can I opt out of this program?
No. SquareTrade or Geek Squad warranties on eBay will be offered on all eligible listings. You are also free to continue market and offer your own warranties on your listings.
What should I do if my customer contacts me about an item that is broken or damaged and covered by a SquareTrade or Geek Squad warranty they purchased on eBay?

Remote Support from Geek Squad
As electronic products become more sophisticated, the level of technical knowledge required to operate and maintain each item has also increased. It can be challenging to know which tools to use to optimize the performance of your electronics, such as laptops and mobile phones, and may demand more time than you want to spend. We want to ensure buyers can use and enjoy the electronics they purchase on eBay—without the challenges of setup, configuration, and getting started. To this end, we are now offering remote support plans on some electronics products for periods of three, six, or twelve months through a new partnership with Geek Squad. Buyers who purchase remote support from Geek Squad will have access to 24 x 7 technology support online and by phone, to help them resolve any technical issues quickly.

Why is eBay offering Remote Support from Geek Squad?
Buyers frequently purchase high-end electronics that require a certain level of technical knowledge to either use correctly or maintain optimal performance. Without this knowledge, the set up and maintenance of these items may prove difficult for the buyer which could result in them regretting the purchase, or the product may not function at an optimal level—either way, it's an unhappy customer. A good customer experience is especially important for the large and/or high-ticket item categories, such as TVs, theater systems, computers and cameras as it means they're more likely to return to eBay to shop for additional electronics or accessories for things they own. Buyers can now purchase remote support from Geek Squad, directly on eBay when they purchase eligible products, to ensure they're set-up correctly and functioning as expected. We chose to partner with Geek Squad to offer these programs because it is a well-recognized and respected provider of remote support for technology products.
How does Geek Squad's Remote Support program work?
Buyers can purchase either remote online or phone support from Geek Squad for either three or six month terms. With Remote Support, buyers can connect with a Geek Squad representative 24x7 and they will provide online or over the phone support to the technical problem the buyer is experiencing. With the purchase of a laptop only, buyers can purchase online, phone, or in-store support for up to 12 months. These plans also enable buyers to bring their laptop into any Best Buy store for in-person support.
Can I select if I want to offer Geek Squad Remote Support on my listings?
There's no action necessary. eBay will automatically offer Geek Squad Remote Support in all qualifying listings. This offer is applied to listings in the same way Square Trade or Geek Squad warranties are offered.
Do all of my listings qualify for remote support & warranties?
Only listings that meet the following criteria will qualify for Geek Squad remote support:
- From sellers who are not considered below-standard and have at least 20 feedback
- All item conditions with the exception of “for parts” or “not working” and “new with defects”
- All items with a selling price of $40 or higher
Only US listings (determined by buyer residence) are eligible for Geek Squad remote support at this time.

Do all sellers qualify for remote support & warranties?
From US based sellers who are not considered below-standard and have at least 20 feedback
Will Remote Support be offered on both Fixed Price and Auction-style listings?
Yes it will be offered on both types of listings but there are some differences in the purchase process:
- On the payment confirmation page buyers will see a link they can click to offering a Geek Squad remote support plan based on their recent purchase.
- Approximately 48 hours after purchase, buyers who purchased qualified items but did not buy remote support at the time of purchase, will be sent an email that allows them to purchase coverage up until 30 days from the date the item was purchased.
Fixed Price: Geek Squad remote support plans will be offered on fixed price listings in a similar way as on Auction-style listing but buyers will also be presented with the option to purchase remote support plan on a listing directly from the View Item or Product Details pages.
Is Remote Support available in all Electronics categories?
Geek Squad remote support is currently only available in the following categories:
- All computing devices (desktops, laptops, tablets, netbooks)
- Networking devices (routers, switches)
- Printers in CE meta (consumer)
Can a buyer purchase remote support for a product they already own or for someone else?
Yes. A buyer can purchase 3 or 6 months of remote support as a standalone purchase for a product they may have previously purchased, either on or off of eBay.com.
Can a buyer resell a product with Geek Squad remote support associated with it?
Yes, when you sell an item that is covered by a remote support plan to a buyer in the US, any coverage originally purchased with the item is still in effect and fully transferable.
What if a buyer purchases a Geek Squad remote support plan then returns the item or no longer wants the coverage?
Buyers who no longer want remote support coverage or return items covered by Geek Squad remote support will need to contact Geek Squad directly to request a refund.
