Bill Selby (Mantium) turned a lifetime of stuff he no longer wanted into "a cash cow" for mortgage payments "without really trying."
Bill never intended to sell on eBay. He just wanted to fill out his collection of horror monster trading cards, comic books and Danny Kaye memorabilia he'd been collecting since he was a boy. He quickly found rare treasures he'd searched his whole life for. According to Bill, "eBay is where everything you'd ever want is available."
Within a couple of years he'd fleshed-out his collection but he found new desires. He decided to start selling "to justify my collecting habit." Bill now upgrades his collections by replacing lower-grade items with mint condition items, then selling those that have been replaced.
Tips and tricks Bill uses to find his heart's desire: using the Advanced Search checkbox to search in both Search title and description. Then he changes the search results to sort highest price first to find rare items without going through pages and pages.
In 1986 Bill moved from Columbus, Ohio to California. He took his then considerable collections to his sister's house. She stored them for over 20 years, even moving them when her company relocated her to Dallas. Bill kept meaning to go sort out all his stuff but life got in the way and he procrastinated for over two decades.
Finally he flew to Dallas, loaded everything into a U-Haul truck and drove it to San Francisco. He hired contractors to build shelves in his garage, got 50 plastic containers and neatly loaded everything up on the shelves, without really sorting it. Now he's going through it all, bit by bit, and listing things as he uncovers them.
By keeping about 25 auction-style listings going at a time, Bill is generating about $1000 per month. He likes to start and end his auctions on Sunday because people are more likely to be free to monitor the final hours.
With almost 1,400 transactions buying and selling, Bill has never had anything lost or damaged in the mail. He ships everything USPS Priority mail with delivery confirmation and insurance. Perhaps that's part of why his feedback score is 100%. Lately he's been getting inquiries about international shipping from Germany, England, Spain, South Africa and beyond. He was thrilled when he sold a Hasbro model from the movie, Alien, for $350 to a fellow in Hong Kong.
