6. Get Exposure for Your Product Pictures
As of September 1, 2009, eBay began selecting sellers' photos for inclusion in the eBay product catalog. If your photo is chosen, an attribution including your user ID and a link to your profile page is included on the product details page under the picture each time it's displayed. This attribution can give you significant additional exposure.

If you'd rather NOT share your photos, you have the option of opting out through My eBay. You can opt out at any time, but any pictures selected starting September 1 during a time you are not opted out may continue to be used in the catalog.

Best Practices

Get maximum exposure for your listings on the new eBay product pages and on search results pages

  • List with product details whenever they're available. That's what gets your listings on the product pages. Product pages have higher sell-through rates than search results pages.

  • Add your product to our database if product details are not available for your item. For sellers in some categories including GPS Devices, Printers, Hard Drives, MP3 Players, DVD Players, Televisions, Camera Lenses, Home Speakers and Subwoofers, eBay is making it faster and easier to add products. You see this option during the listing process.

  • Price competitively! Price is one of the main factors in determining the position of your listing on the product pages.

  • Use FREE Subtitle in Books, Music, Movies and Video Games to help your items stand out and provide more information on the condition of your item. On product pages in these categories, Subtitle is used to fill in the "Seller Comments" field.

  • Use long-duration, Fixed Price listings for your multiple-quantity products and add inventory to your existing listings rather than create new ones. This helps you build recent sales. (In Book, Music, Movie or Video Game categories, sellers won't be able to create separate listings for Fixed Price items of the same condition).

  • Use Auction-style listings for unique and one-of-a-kind items. Auction-style listings get a boost in Best Match search when the auctions are about to end.

  • Store Inventory Format listings continue to be displayed using the current Store Inventory Format expansion box and use the same criteria as Best Match, so follow the same best practices. Sellers in Books, Movies & DVDs, Music and Video Games—get more information and best practices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Matching Products Module

What is the Matching Products module and when does it appear?
The product page appears when buyer clicks on a product in the Matching Products module in search results. The product page shows buyers common information about the product at the top and shows all the items available for purchase matching the product.

What is the difference between a "product" and a "listing"?
A listing is an individual item for sale by a seller. A product is a group of listings (regardless of price), usually items with identical product details, available from a number of different sellers.

How are products sorted in the Matching Products module?
The products in the Matching Products module are sorted by Best Match. The product that is considered most relevant will display in the first position.

How are the new and used prices in the Matching Products module calculated?
The system looks for the lowest new and used Fixed Price or Auction-style listing ending in 15 minutes. The prices in the Matching Products module are automatically re-calculated every 15 minutes.

How is the number of items available calculated?
The number of items that is displayed for each product in the Matching Products module is the number of individual listings available on the product page. This is also automatically re-counted every 15 minutes.

Product page

What is a product page and when does it appear?
This product page is the page that appears when a buyer clicks on a Matching Products module in search results. The product page shows buyers common information about the product at the top, community reviews, and the items available for purchase.

Why does eBay have product pages?
When buyers search for popular products, they prefer to see matching results consolidated on one page. Product pages get higher sell-through rates than search results pages.

Are product pages used in all categories where product details are available?
Yes, but in 2009 product pages will surface more often in Books, Movies & DVDs, Music, Video Games, Tickets, Cell Phones, and possibly a few other technology categories. Product details and product pages are available in many other categories.

Should I always use product details if they are available?
Yes! You should always list with product details when available. Listing with product details will still enhance your visibility.

How can I get my listings to show up on a product page?
To have your item appear on the product page, you need to list using product details in the Sell Your Item form, Turbo Lister, File Exchange, or the eBay Application Programming Interface.

Does my listing appear both on the product page and in the search results list that appears below the Matching Products module?
Yes, listings that show up on product pages will also show up in search results.

What is the "Great Savings" box at the top of the product page, and how can I get my listing featured there? The "Great Value, Great Seller" box launched in February 2009 and has been such a great success that we're expanding it. Now called the "Great Savings" box, this placement highlights items with excellent prices from three high quality sellers. This isn't an editorial placement or advertisement, and every seller has an opportunity to be displayed here. In order to be a competitively priced item and competitive shipping (free shipping is a plus). You must also reach the April 2010 PowerSeller criteria or achieve Top-rated seller status. Starting in October, you will need to have a competitively priced item, competitive shipping (free shipping is a plus) and be either a Top-Rated Seller or meet the PowerSeller requirements as defined for April 2010.

Is the Great Savings box getting more prominence?
Yes, the Great Savings box has been expanded to contain up to three listings that are prominently displayed above the fold. We are looking at refining the eligibility requirements. However, regardless of the changes, this box will always be used to showcase high quality items at the best prices from terrific sellers.

How is the order of listings determined on the product page?
The product page is sorted by Best Match. Buyers can change the sort order by selecting another option in the "Sort by" drop-down list.

On the product pages in Books, Movies & DVDs, Music, and Video Games, the results are further grouped by item condition.

What are the item conditions for Books, Movies & DVDs, Music, and Video Games categories?
The item conditions for the media categories are:
  • Brand New
  • Like New
  • Very Good
  • Good
  • Acceptable
The definitions for these conditions are:
  • Brand New: Item has never been opened or removed from the manufacturer's sealing. Item must be in original shrink wrap.
  • Like New: Item still in shrink wrap or looks as if it was just taken out of shrink wrap, no wear and tear, all facets of product flawless and intact.
  • Very Good: No damage at all to jewel case or item cover (no scuff marks, no scratching, no cracks or holes), cover art and liner notes included, VHS and DVD box included, video game instructions and box included, teeth of disk holder undamaged, minimal wear and tear to exterior of item, no skipping on CD/DVD, no fuzzy/snowy frames on VHS tape.
  • Good: Minor damage to jewel case (scuffs or cracks) or item cover (scuff marks, scratching, or cracks), cover art and liner notes included for a CD, VHS and DVD box included, video game instructions included, no skipping on CD/DVD, no fuzzy/snowy frames on VHS tape.
  • Acceptable: Tear or hole in VHS/DVD box, video game instructions and box not included.
What are "Seller comments" on the Product Page?
The information you enter in the Subtitle field of the Sell Your Item form displays on the product page under the "Seller comments" heading. Seller comments let you set yourself apart on the product page by showing buyers more details about your item. Buyers can quickly scan the list to determine what they're interested in. Seller comments include things like fast shipping and handling, item was signed by artist, sealed case, or specific details about you as a seller.

Subtitle is currently free in the Books, Movies &DVDs, Music, and Video Games categories when you list with product details.

I listed multiple products, but I only see one on the page.
In Books, Movies & DVDs, Music, and Video Games, only one seller's listing per condition is displayed on the product page. In other categories, multiple listings from one seller may appear.

"See more matching products" page

What is the page I see when I click the "See more matching products" link?
"See more matching products" shows listings that are relevant to your search term. Items listed without product details are grouped separately, but in the same list. The products appear at the top of the results list, followed by the non-product listings.

How are the products and non-product listings chosen for the "See more matching products" list?
"See more matching products" uses the same criteria as search results: it displays products and non-product listings relevant to the buyer's search terms. For example, if a buyer searches for iPod nano, "See more matching products" will show both product and non-product listings relevant to "iPod nano."

Why are products grouped above non-product listings in "See more matching products"?
Since the Matching Products module only appears when there is high product demand, and because the buyer has clicked the "See more matching products" link, we place the products at the top of the search results.

How does a buyer get to the "See more matching products" page?
Currently the only way for buyers to access the "See more matching products" page from within eBay is by clicking the "see more matching products" link in the Matching Products module. The page is also accessible from Google and other search engines through links and eBay advertising placements.

What types of listings are displayed in the "See more matching products" page?
After the products, the listings displayed in the "See more matching products" page are non-product listings that match the buyer's query, but the seller did not list with product details. These items should truly be non-product inventory such as unique items that match the user's query, for example, an "Apple" t-shirt.

Is it possible for an item that is a product but wasn't listed with product details to be displayed in the "See more matching products" page?
Yes. "See more matching products page" displays listings that match the buyers search query but were not listed with product details but these listings will not appear in the top section of matching products or on the product page.

How does a buyer distinguish a product from a listing in the "See more matching products" page?
Products appear first in the search results list and will always display the number of available listings in orange numbers. Listings do not have an orange number showing the count.

If the "See more matching products" page shows a product and the seller has listed with product details, will the seller's listing still appear individually in the search results list?
No. If a seller has listed their item with product details, on the "See more matching products" page it will be grouped within the product on the product details page.

How is the "See more matching products" page sorted?
The "See more matching products page" is sorted by Best Match. The product that is considered the most relevant is displayed at the top of the result set.

Which categories use these conditions?
The media categories that will use the new item conditions are:
  • Books: Fiction, Non-Fiction, Cookbooks, Children's Books, Textbooks and Audiobooks
  • DVD & Movies: DVD HD-DVD & Blu-ray, VHS, VHS Non-US (PAL), UMD and Other Formats
  • Music: CDs, Cassettes
  • Video Games: Games
We'll be adding more categories and subcategories in the future.
