Seller Resources: Understand and Manage Your Inventory
This guide will help eBay Stores sellers who use the Store Inventory listing format understand how the fee changes may impact their business and evaluate options for adjusting their eBay selling strategy. To help you put these tips into action, we're also offering eBay Stores sellers a free two-month subscription to eBay's Marketplace Research Basic tool.
How Fee Changes May Impact You

Fee changes will impact eBay Store sellers who use the Store Inventory listing format and will take effect as of 23:59:59 PT (ET for eBay.ca) on August 21, 2006. eBay Stores sellers who only use the Auction-style, Auction-style with Buy It Now, and Fixed Price listing formats and sellers who do not have an eBay Store will not be impacted by these changes.

To estimate the new fees you would pay for Store Inventory listings without changing your current strategy, please review the new fee structure and consider the following factors. You may want to start with your most recent month of data (available in your Sales Reports, a free tool available to all eBay users).

Store Inventory Fee Information to Consider
Insertion Fees
  • How many Store Inventory listings are currently live?
  • What percentage of your listings are in the Store Inventory format?
  • How do your listings fit into the new Store Inventory Insertion Fee tiers?
  • How many Store Inventory listings are listed Good 'Til Cancelled?
Final Value Fees
  • How many Store Inventory listings sold?
  • How do these sold items fit into the new Store Inventory Final Value Fee tiers?
  • What is the average selling price of your Store Inventory listings?

 Review Your Listing Format Strategy

You should consider several key factors when developing your listing format strategy. While we generally suggest that sellers list in all listing formats to appeal to all of eBay's buyer population, there is no one tried-and-true listing format formula for all sellers. When thinking about your own listing strategy, please keep in mind the following factors.

Product Type and Merchandise Selection
One of the biggest distinctions among listing strategies corresponds with the type of product you are selling. Here are some general rules to consider to maximize your selling price and minimize your fees:
  • Auction-Style listings are best when selling popular in-demand items, sale items, in-season items, unique or hard-to-find items.
  • Fixed Price listings are best when selling items that sell dependably or for commodity items.
  • Store Inventory can be a cost-effective way to offer a wider range of inventory. You can leverage your Auction-style and Fixed Price listings to drive traffic to your eBay Store, which houses all of your listings.

Store Traffic and Buying Patterns
In order to maximize your total sales it is important to understand the type of buyers that are visiting your listings and how they get there. Generally, sellers who are able to drive consistent traffic to their eBay Store and foster a repeat buyer base tend to have more success with the Store Inventory listing format. Here are a few questions you should consider when deciding your listing strategy:
  • What percentage of your buyers are return buyers?
  • Do your buyers tend to buy multiple related items on the same visit?
  • How many potential buyers visit your Store on a daily or monthly basis?
Sales Reports and Stores Traffic Reports are two eBay tools available to eBay Stores sellers for free to help you better understand these questions.

Performance Measures
Optimizing your listing strategy takes a deep understanding of your business metrics.
  • Total Sales: Total sales is a fundamental indicator of the health of your business, as it is the aggregate measure of performance over a given period of time. You should monitor your total sales to understand how any changes you make to your strategy impact your overall business.
  • Average Selling Price (ASP): The Average Selling Price (ASP) of all the items you sell is also a critical metric. To calculate your ASP, divide your total sales by total items sold. Typically, many sellers find it's most cost effective to sell high-priced items in the Auction or Fixed Price format, leaving lower priced items in the Store Inventory listing format.
  • Conversion Rate: You can determine your overall conversion rate by dividing the total number of items you've sold by the total number of items you've listed. A full understanding of Conversion Rates by format, product, and price point allows you to offer the right product at the right price -- to ensure you get the best possible sales volume and profit margins.
As mentioned earlier, your free subscription to eBay Sales Reports will help you track your performance and provide you with the information you need to understand the results of all your efforts.
