The Postal Service has three Mail Recovery Centers (Atlanta, GA; San Francisco, CA; and St. Paul, MN) that are responsible for the final disposition of undeliverable First-Class mail, packages, and accountable mail items, and for protecting the privacy of the mail.

All parcels that are undeliverable as addressed and have no return address are opened for inspection. Accountable mail items such as those that are registered, insured, etc., are logged into a national claims database and held for possible claims. Items that remain unclaimed and damaged merchandise upon which a claim has been paid are sold at public auction at these three sites.

In order to provide an opportunity to a larger public audience, the Postal Service is conducting a test on eBay to auction these items online. Nearly all the merchandise listed is on sale because of poor packaging or improper addressing. Don't let this happen to you.
