About the Program
As a PowerSeller, you can make a difference in your community with Powerful Giving. eBay Foundation's Powerful Giving program gives PowerSellers the opportunity to recommend nonprofit organizations that you would like to see receive a charitable contribution from the Foundation.
Here's how it works:
- You complete a nomination form for a charity close to your heart, explaining why you believe it should receive a grant.
- Qualifying organizations will be invited to submit a proposal to the eBay Foundation.
- A committee will read and review all proposals, conduct due diligence and select organizations to receive funding.
- Ten grants of up to $5,000 each will be awarded to U.S. based non-profit organizations.
Submit a Recommendation
To recommend a charity, complete the Powerful Giving PowerSeller Recommendation Form
On the form, you will be asked for:
- your contact information
- the name and address of the charity you are recommending
- an email address for a contact at the organization
- a statement explaining why you think the charity is deserving of a grant
We must receive a valid email address as this will be the method used to contact each organization. Without a working email address, the organization will not receive an invitation to submit a proposal!
All PowerSeller recommendations must be received by the Friday, August 15, 2008 deadline. Charities will have one more month to complete their proposals. All proposals from nonprofits must be received by Friday, September 19, 2008. Grant decisions will be made by the end of October, 2008.
FAQs
What is the eBay Foundation Powerful Giving Program?
Launched in 2005, the Powerful Giving program is designed to recognize and support the charities that are important to some of the most exceptional members of the eBay community. In the past three years, eBay Foundation has made $100,000 in grants to charities recommended by PowerSellers.
Who is eligible to recommend a charity?
Any eBay PowerSeller in the U.S. who is in good standing may recommend an organization for funding. eBay employees and members of their immediate family are not eligible to participate in the program. This also applies to any wholly owned subsidiaries of eBay and their immediate family members.
How many grants will eBay Foundation make?
eBay Foundation is making more grants than ever before through the Powerful Giving program. For 2008, ten grants of up to $5,000 each will be awarded to U.S. based nonprofit organizations.
How does an eBay PowerSeller recommend an organization for funding?
To recommend an organization for funding, complete the Powerful Giving PowerSeller Recommendation Form. Once completed, the nonprofit organization will be sent an email asking them to submit a proposal. They will be required to complete Part 2 through an online application process as well. In order for an organization to be considered for a grant, both the PowerSeller recommendation and the organization's proposal must be completed.
How many charities can a PowerSeller recommend?
A PowerSeller may only recommend one organization.
What is the deadline for submitting a recommendation and proposal?
- For PowerSellers: the recommendation form must be received by Friday, August 15, 2008.
- For Nonprofits: organizations will have an additional month past the PowerSeller recommendation deadline to complete their proposals. The deadline to submit completed proposals is Friday, September 19, 2008. Grant decisions will be made by the end of October, 2008.
What organizations are eligible for this program?
Organizations must be recognized by the Internal Revenue Service under Section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code. There are no exceptions to this eligibility requirement. You can search on Guidestar to see if the charity you are interested in recommending fits this criteria.
What organizations are NOT eligible?
- Religious organizations, except when the activities being sponsored are non-sectarian, such as soup kitchens, shelters, or the work of international aid organizations
- Charitable organizations that are classified as private foundations
- Service clubs, social groups, fraternal and labor organizations, political organizations and lobbying groups
- Business or industry associations
- Government agencies
- Organizations that discriminate with respect to membership and/or the provision of service or the use of facilities

Information for Charities
What can grant funding support?
Grants will be awarded to organizations for specific programs or projects and not for general operating support such as fundraising, office space or administrative expenses. Examples of eligible projects include, but are not limited to: computer, ESL, entrepreneurship, or job training classes at a community center; exhibitions or classes at a public library; an afterschool business education program for youth; an art museum's community outreach program; a childcare or tutoring program at a homeless shelter; a food pantry program; or a meal delivery program for senior citizens. The Foundation is most likely to consider projects with modest budgets.
What selection criteria are used for the Powerful Giving program?
Funding recommendations will be made by a committee with expertise in the non-profit sector. Grant decisions will be based on several factors including:
- The degree to which the organization's work and project contribute to the community's welfare
- Demonstrated ability of the organization and the project to address a community need
- Project effectiveness
- Project impact
- Project need
- Fiscal responsibility of the organization
What is the deadline for submitting a proposal?
- For PowerSellers: the recommendation form must be received by Friday, August 15, 2008.
- For Nonprofits: organizations will have an additional month past the PowerSeller recommendation deadline to complete their proposals. The deadline to submit completed proposals is Friday, September 19, 2008. Grant decisions will be made by the end of October 2008.

- eBay and eBay Foundation reserve the right to decline funding to organizations it may deem inappropriate for funding and not in keeping with the general operating principles of eBay or the eBay Foundation.
- If the eBay user is no longer a PowerSeller at the time grants are awarded, their nominated organization will not be considered for funding.
- All grant decisions are final and at the discretion of eBay and eBay Foundation
