  • Try to find the "peak" of your area's fall foliage season. A Web search may help.
  • Shoot during the "golden hours" - early to mid-morning and later afternoon to sunset. You'll get more colorful pictures at those times.
  • Try shooting toward the sun through leaves to capture the beautiful backlit glow of autumn colors.
  • Set your digital camera to the Saturated mode for more colorful pictures, or use a saturated film in your 35mm point & shoot camera.
  • If you don't have a wide-angle lens for panoramas (or close-ups with lots of depth-of-field), consider adding a 20mm lens or 24mm lens.
  • Use a tripod to steady your camera for long exposures and when shooting at telephoto setting with a camcorder.
  • Three filters can enhance your fall foliage photos. A polarizing filter can darken the sky and reduce reflections on water and leaves. A warming filter will enhance the colors in your pictures just a big. And a color enhancing filter will really make your pictures pop with color!
  • Don't forget the close-up shots of leaves - on the ground and in ponds. Try a digital camera with zoom lens).

On a trip to Indonesia, I passed a school and heard children playing inside. Because I love photographing kids, I went inside to see what was happening. Immediately, I was surrounded by curious kids wanting their picture taken. But it was too dark to take a natural light picture. With the schoolmaster's OK, I motioned to the kids to "follow me" outside. This is my favorite shot. It shows how happy the kids were to "play" with me, a mysterious stranger, for just a few moments.

Gear I used for this picture:
Canon EOS 1V 35mm film camera (for total exposure control)
24mm lens (covers a wide area of view)
Lens Hood (helps prevent lens flare)
