Getting a good photo is critical for eBay sellers. eBay buyers want to see pictures of the items they are considering for purchase. Read below for category specific- tips and general recommendations to help you take the best picture for selling on eBay.

Common Problems
  • Reflections
  • Distracting background
  • Item is too small in the picture
  • Equipment
  • Digital: Minotla Dimage 7 or Canon D30 with a macro lens.
  • Film: Nikon N80 with macro lens.

  • Solutions
  • Photograph the item outside on an overcast day and shoot in the shade. Inside, take the picture under a bright light source. Move the item around until you get minimal reflections.
  • Select a plain background. (I used a t-shirt for this shot.)
  • Use the macro setting on your zoom lens or get a true macro lens.

  • Film:Minolta Maxxum 5 or Canon EOS Elan 7 with a zoom lens that has at least a 28mm setting.

  • Use a wide-angle lens to get the entire building in the picture.

  • Include some of the surrounding environment in the picture.

  • Equipment

  • Solutions
  • If possible, don't picture your item on a hanger. Picture your item in soft light - indoors or outdoors on an overcast day.

  •
    Common Problems
  • Can't see the picture or painting
  • Equipment
  • Digital:Olympus C3020 or Canon PowerShot S300.
  • Film:Maxxum 800se or Nikon N80.
  •   Solutions
  • Shoot at about a 30degree angle. Placing artwork flat on a table is a good idea if possible.
  • Use a polarizing filter to reduce glare.
  • Make sure bright objects (windows and lamps) are not reflected in the glass.
  • GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS:
    1. Take your time. Set up a pleasing composition.
    2. Use an image-enhancement program (such as Adobe's Photoshop Elements or MGI's PhotoSuite) to adjust the brightness and contrast in your pictures - especially indoor pictures taken in natural light.
    • Don't, however, use the program to take out scratches and the like from your product - because the photo MUST accurately show the condition of your item.
    3. For indoor shooting: use ISO 800 film or set your digital camera's ISO to 800.
    4. When posting a picture on eBay, you don't need a large file: a 5x7, 100 DPI, JPEG image is fine. If you don't have a digital camera or a scanner, you can turn your pictures into digital files with the Kodak Picture CD (a service available on many photo processing envelopes).
    5. And last but not least, try to fill the frame with your item (unless the surrounding area is important).
