It's Time to Put the Pieces Back Together…in Patchwork!! Bohemian chic is in and taking the form of patchwork-on everything from dresses, coats and
sweaters to tops, skirts and
pants. (Didn't I say it was on everything!) Check out Donna Karan, Dolce & Gabbana, Missoni,
Kenneth Cole and Roberto Cavalli for the most clever uses of patchwork. If you want just a touch of this style trend, try a patchwork bag in suede, leather or
pony-skin. Coach, Hogans, Marni, Givenchy or
Dior do it up right. |

Comfort, Color and Class for Cooler Weather
As America steps up its patriotism and our country's military men and women span the globe to protect our freedom, fashion marches to the same beat. We can step out in style by adding military-inspired pieces to our wardrobe. Now, camouflage may seem a bit "yesterday," but bold gold buttons on
Marc Jacobs snakeskin ankle boots and Louis Vuitton coats; along with braiding on
Chloé skirts, Tommy Hilfiger cavalry coats,
and Barbara Bui shirts are just the call to arms we need. Oscar de la Renta
did a red low-heeled military boot that would make any woman enlist in his style battalion. Jean Paul Gaultier put military pockets, belting
and ties on shirts over leopard skirts for a more Sgt. Pepper, don't-ask-don't-tell kind of army. So this season march to the beat of a different drummer and don't fear a fashion court-martial. Mix it up. Emporio Armani Tuskegee-airmen-inspired leather jackets are perfect over
fitted slim shirts, and Alexander McQueen's tweed suits are a nuovo homage to Amelia Earhart.
Let your fashion fantasy take flight. Try a leather cap and some Ray-Ban or Armani aviator sunglasses to accessorize the look of a Ferré Jeans military jacket.
Dolce & Gabbana's sailors/models hit the flight deck with a more utilitarian and flirty feel. At Celine, they're using flowy skirts to soften the look of their fashionably armed forces. Be proud and wear your designer's label like a medal of honor as you march down the runway of your life.
As we jet-set ahead at warp speed in our Jimmy Choo stilettos carrying the chicest new Fendi bag, our lives seem to pass us by so quickly, leaving only memories of a romanticized era. Long gone are the days of watching birds and butterflies while sitting on a porch with a freshly squeezed lemonade or frolicking in a field with a Slurpee, a dog, and your best friend. Now we are engrossed in video games and a Red Bull or critiquing celebrity fashion faves or faux pas by Gucci, Prada, or Givenchy at the Vogue VH1 Fashion Awards-while slurping down a frozen caffeine-free double-shot mocchachino latte. Calgon, take me away… take me back to simpler, more homespun times; needlepoint, Mayberry, and Aunt Bee felt safe. Fleetwood Mac rocked, our fashion icons were Marcia and Jan Brady, or Laurie Partridge.
And patchwork was more than just a quilt-it was a fashion statement. Careful what you ask for … the '70s are back in style and designers are reveling in excitement. Dolce & Gabbana cashed in their leopard prints for old-school boho patchwork dresses.
While Missoni's vibrant eclectic color mixes came to life in patchwork coats. Nicolas Ghesquire for Balenciaga wowed fashion critics such as Vogue's Andre Leon Talley with his yellow, brown and beige op-art, patchwork,
oversized sweaters. And pop-culture princesses like Sarah Jessica Parker and Beyonce Knowles were photographed in the mix in his mesh-and-fabric patchwork tops. Leave it to Donna Karan to do the aesthetically pleasing and
regal royal blue or aubergine sheer, velvet, and crepe patchwork evening or daytime dresses. And Kenneth Cole used his street-style smarts to funk up
chunky sweaters and high boots with patchwork skirts for a refreshing wearable version of a retro classic plunge à la Ally McGraw (Love Story). As I'm sure Roberto Cavalli revolutionized this motif in the '60s and '70s, he has revitalized it for our new millennium, using antique carpet-like prints for
patchwork pants, skirts, and jackets-perfect, whether you're going dining or to the disco.
An old fashion adage says: If you did it the first time, skip it the second time. But not this time-just try an accent to spice up solids like brown or black or denim by accessorizing with a medley of suede, leather, or pony-skin
patchwork bags for a luxury look with personal style. Grab a duffle by Coach, a shoulder bag by Hogan or
Marni, a clutch by Givenchy, or a day bag by Dior to set your star style above the rest… give it your best.
Look out, ladyz! Fashion, like movies, has sequels. This season it's girlz in the hoods… a quintessential piece for fall's fun layered looks-from Versace's sleeveless sweaters to D&G's or Dior's fur-trimmed anoraks.
The hoods are back and I'm not talking about your neighbor's thuggish son or your daughter's ex. These are designer duds that are definite do's, with utilitarian chic and sporty style at the top of our hip list. This look is practical (warmth & dryness) as well as cool. Mix it up by accessorizing!!! Try opal rings or bold, gold herringbone bracelets. Missoni went for classic cardigans with hoods over strapless dresses,
while Donatella used b-ball style, layering hoodies under bomber jackets at Versus. The look is casual and fun, urban yet chic…just like us. Paris purveyor of rock-and-roll-chic Anne Demeulemeester used layers of
chiffons and sheers for hooded evening looks and Miucca's Miu Miu featured space-age chic hoods with practical classics in her khaki and
suede romper sets. Whether the weather calls for it or the mood summons it, this look is in and is no longer just for Little Red Riding Hoods.
Tie me up, tie me down…the diva's dilemma this season is about which rich lace-up shoes or boots you must have. For me, it's Manolo Blahnik's take on the Timberland boot, but stop-it's done as a stiletto (oh yes!!!).
Long Island and hip-hop chic is in and this shoe is it. If the sexy suburban woodsman isn't your look, try YSL's strappy lace-up gladiator-style sandal, much more appropriate for cocktails and calypso. Donna Karan's collection and DKNY
each featured sinfully smart and signature shoes in suede or layer-cut leather with a slightly masculine feel for wide-leg pants or pencil-slim skirts.
Michael Kors and J.P. Tods give you flat lace-up peasant boots in rich suede or
leather for fall's military looks. Or take your stride in comfort. The lower heel is sensible and stylish (now, there's a rarity in fashion). So if you're looking to reach new heights in every and any way, you've got to see this season's (Azzedine Alai's) chunky lace-up heeled shoes or boots. I sighed at first sight when I saw them at Barneys. Then there's Ferragamo's lace-up
black pump, which is the perfect twist on the classic. It lets everyone know you got it going on, girl. Coming or going, day and night, you've got that right.
With music, parties, and people, it's all about the mix. Well, now it's time to think of tweed as your new secret weapon. Moschino threw tweed paperboy hats (you know, my style) and jackets
over chiffon print dresses, just for the frill of it. While Karl Lagerfeld revamped Coco Chanel's timeless and classic tweed suits, they also work as separates for schoolgirl
skirts and blazers, to pull a look together. With denim or diamonds,
14K gold rings and charms, or even with leather and cashmere, tweeds have the texture and tenacity to take your various looks to the next level.
Cacharal harkened to the elegance of Hitchcock's leading ladies-like Grace Kelly or Tipi Hedren-in smart, sleek, fitted suits. At Anne Klein the look was roughened up to show a modern savvy style, paired with midriff baring, leather motorcycle jackets, and
wide-leg low-slung pants. Max Mara's classic high-waisted skirts and gaucho-styled pants (there's those '70s redefined) were just right for office attire coupled with great sweater sets,
turtlenecks, or even cashmere shrugs. Classic doesn't mean boring; it just means business, baby.
