Listing a Collectible BookNovember 2003
When listing books on eBay that may appeal to collectors, there are a number of details that you should include in order to present your items in the most attractive manner. Several of the most common and important details to mention when listing a collectible book include:
  1. State condition accurately. You can also provide links to the standards you use for judging condition, such as AB Bookman's or your own.
  2. Provide correct "points of issue" so that sellers can verify your item is listed accurately. These may include: publisher, ISBN, edition, printing, publication date, numberline, and any other unique features of the item.
  3. Include pictures, including pictures of the signature or copyright page.
  4. Include provenance or how the item came to be in your possession.
If you do not know how to accurately determine whether a book is a first edition or otherwise significant to a collector, there are several ways to do so:
  1. Get help from an authentication service. Industry professionals can help identify what you should include in your listing. A full list of authenticators in all eBay categories can be found by clicking here.
  2. Ask a fellow bookseller. If you have many books to sell, an eBay Trading Assistant may be able to help you correctly describe & list your books. A bookseller on the eBay Bookseller's Discussion Board may also be able to assist you.
  3. Purchase a guide to collecting books. It may be worth the investment to purchase a book that helps identify first editions and other collectible works. Click hereá to browse for "books on collecting" on eBay.

Entertainment Marketing Campaign
September 2003
To help you build your business on eBay, we're launching a marketing campaign specifically for Movies, Music, Video Games, and Entertainment Memorabilia categories from September 25th - October 31st.

Along with a PR campaign and merchandising of entertainment-related items across eBay.com, we'll be driving traffic to your items through a "Bid, Buy, and WIN!" promotion.

How it works:
  1. Beginning September 25th, various major retail outlets, consumer shopping destinations, and eBay partners will be giving out millions of special cards with eBay keywords such as "Sopranos," "Michael Jackson," "Playstation 2," "Bob Dylan," and "Matrix."
  2. These cards will instruct buyers to go to www.eBay.com and type in the keyword listed on the card.
  3. Buyers that type in these keywords on eBay will be eligible to win prizes and bid on entertainment items!
How you can participate:
  1. Be prepared to list during the promotional period from September 25th - October 31st.
  2. When buyers come to eBay during this promotion, they will be encouraged to bid and buy movies, music, video games, and entertainment memorabilia, so make sure you've got lots of listings active!
  3. If you have items related to the keywords below, be sure to use these keywords in your listing title from September 25th - October 31st. Be sure to adhere to eBay keyword policy guidelines when listing these items.

New Listing Service for Sellers
August 2003
From its beginnings seven years ago as an innovative service linking inventories of four bookstores, Abebooks.com has grown into a storefront for over 10,000 booksellers listing more than 42 million books.

Now the company is offering booksellers the opportunity to reach a new audience through eBay. The new service is aimed at both existing ABEbooks sellers who can now upload their existing inventory to eBay through ABEbooks and any bookseller whose using a database to manage their book inventory.

Sellers who sign up for the service will benefit from:

  • A fast, easy way to list books that have been imported to ABEbooks' inventory program
  • Free scheduling options
  • Cost savings on image fees
  • The ability to monitor active and closed listings through Abebooks
  • Free ISBN lookup
  • Free book inventory software
  • Centralized customer support
  • The ability to manage fixed price listings on eBay's half.com, as well as auction-style listings on eBay.

"The online market for used books continues to grow 40-50% a year, but it's getting more and more price competitive," says Boris Wertz, VP for Business Development at Abebooks. "That's where eBay and Half.com come in. They represent such a tremendous growth opportunity."

While the book category on eBay is expanding rapidly, many booksellers are still testing the waters. Any bookseller who's already ventured into eBay sales knows the transition from a fixed-price environment to managing auctions can be tough. Uploading items and scheduling listings requires a significant investment of time and resources.

Since Abebooks already offers inventory management for its own booksellers and for eBay's Half.com, it was a natural step to offer the same service for eBay listings. Leveraging its book-specific expertise in inventory management and cataloguing, the company hopes to offer one-stop shopping for booksellers.

"Now booksellers can take advantage of a single inventory management tool that allows them to track all their inventory, including all the books they want to list on eBay," says Wertz.

Abebooks offers several distinct advantages for booksellers already selling on eBay-or those looking at moving into online auctions:

  • Inventory Management. Great for people with large inventories, or for those who want to outsource management of their listings.
  • Speed. Setting up a single item on eBay can take as long as 30 minutes for beginners, 10 minutes for experts. Part of this time is spent figuring out which payment provider to select, which shipping agent to choose, cutting and pasting listing information from another program into eBay, etc. Abebooks makes it easier by providing a basic html template that can be used for each listing and managing other details for its sellers.
  • Access to a larger market. Booksellers enjoy access to eBay's international marketplace of over 69 million users, as well as Half.com's fixed-price marketplace for books.

Access to the new eBay service is free for all Abebooks booksellers. New booksellers can join Abebooks and try the program for as little as $25 per month plus a 5% fee for each successful transaction. Booksellers interested in the new service can contact Abebooks directly by e-mail.

"Our goal is to make life easier for booksellers-to help them sell their books," says Wertz. "Selling on eBay is a natural extension of their current business and we can help."

Your Assignment: Sell More Textbooks,
Maximize your Sales! Get new buyers!
June 2003
Get ready for eBay's Back to School Essentials promotion, coming to the site July 24th through August 28th!

What is it?
  • A special event to promote back-to-school essentials, especially textbooks on half.com.

  • Textbook sales spike in August-September with many top sellers reporting 5-10 times normal sales volume during this period.

  • eBay spends heavily during this period—including running ads in college newspapers, driving its affiliate network and buying internet advertising-- to drive buyers to both eBay and half.com

  • Bottom line: If students might be interested in buying your items, list them competitively on half.com and eBay during July and August and take advantage of our free promotion.

When is it?
July 24th through August 28th.
What do I need to do?
Before July 24:
  1. Identify appropriate inventory for the Back to School Essentials promotion.
  2. Prepare listings for your products: take pictures, write descriptions, etc.
Beginning July 28:
  1. List your textbooks on half.com!
Remember, half.com is a fixed-price listing platform and you only pay transaction fees if an item sells.

  2. Start selling!
FAQs:
  1. Is this promotion only for college textbooks?
No. College textbooks account for most of the spike in book sales during back-to-school season, but study guides and other academic-related books also do well. Other categories that fit under the Back to School Essentials promotion include computers, electronics and video games.

  2. How can I be guaranteed that my item will show up in the promotion?
There is no guarantee your item will be featured in the promotion. However, if your items match one of the Back to School Essentials categories, your items should show up.

  3. My products do not match any of the items that will be promoted. Can I still benefit if I list other items during the promotional period?
Yes. Hundreds of thousands of buyers are expected to visit eBay looking for back-to-school items. Our Back to School Essentials merchandising will act as a "front door" to all Electronics and other listings. No matter what you list, your business can benefit from the number of people looking for just the right item for the back-to-school season.
