Establishing a Good Reputation

Remember, most eBay Motors buyers are bidding on vehicles they have never driven or seen in person. Having facilitated well over 1 million car and truck sales, we know from experience that buyers will bid on your listing if they feel that you are a trustworthy seller. You can earn buyers' trust by:
  • Building positive eBay Feedback.
  • Highlighting yourself as a reputable seller in each listing and on your "About Me" page.
  • Using high-quality, professional photographs and well-written descriptions.
  • Providing complete disclosure, offering potential buyers information about damage large and small — most used cars have some damage, so don't leave your buyers guessing.
eBay's Feedback Forum
To rate the level of each seller's customer service, eBay offers a Feedback Forum allowing every buyer to comment on the quality of his or her experience throughout the bidding/purchasing process. The cumulative comments are then used to generate a "Score," which works very much like any CSI rating system you might currently be using at your dealership — a high positive Feedback Score is critical to your success on eBay Motors.

eBay Motors buyers are encouraged to view your Feedback Profile. The higher your Score, the more bids and higher prices you can expect.

As an eBay seller, you can also use the Feedback system to "qualify" potential buyers, examining how they've behaved in previous eBay transactions with other sellers. Viewing each potential buyer's Feedback can answer questions about how that person does business.

Next to any eBay member's user ID, you'll notice a number – a Feedback Rating – in parentheses. For example: Skippy (125) tells you this member's User ID is "Skippy" and he or she has received positive comments from at least "125" other eBay members.

At the end of any transaction, you can leave feedback that is positive, negative, or neutral for your trading partner, depending upon the experience.

Marketplace Integrity
eBay Motors' customers may love your vehicle description, price and terms. But if your Feedback Forum Rating leaves them wondering, they may not buy a car or truck from you. To maintain good standing in the eBay Motors community, follow these guidelines:
  • State Laws – The day eBay becomes the 51st state, we'll provide and enforce regulations for the sale of vehicles through eBay Motors. Until then, the dealer laws and regulations for your state are the law of the land. Conforming to them is YOUR responsibility, and yours alone. In almost all cases, selling vehicles as a business requires a dealer license. If you are unclear as to your legal responsibilities, contact your state's Department of Motor Vehicles. DMV Guide
  • Shill Bidding – Do not make the mistake of bidding on your own listing, or having a friend or associate bid on it, to prevent a poor-listing performance. Regardless of your intentions, this behavior is considered shilling, often deemed a criminal offense resulting in your indefinite suspension from the site.
  • Listing Policies – Adhere to eBay's listing policies. Violating these policies will result in community complaints, the removal of all affected listings and your indefinite suspension from the site.
  • Vehicle Disclosure – Make every effort to accurately represent your vehicles in your listings. eBay buyers absolutely expect that what is described in the listing is what they'll get. Incomplete or false information will often cause problems between you and your bidders, leading to negative feedback.
  • Dispute Resolution – Handle any disputes professionally. Most bidders are reasonable and will respond favorably if you treat them as a valued customer.
  • Fraud Prevention – DO NOT give out your password. Any type of fraudulent activity will be treated very seriously by eBay Motors, possibly resulting in criminal prosecution.
