 | keldoj (1,129), Doja Company
Finding Your Focus
| Settling on the right product can be a time-consuming process, part trial and error, part patience, and part determination. Just ask Home PowerSeller Olga Leung, owner of Doja Company.
After two years of experimenting with a variety of items on eBay ("I was selling clothes, shoes, anything to try to find out what was going to work for me"), the Rowlett, Texas-based seller finally found her focus: furniture.
"I had a friend who worked at a furniture store," recalls Leung, who offers Gift Services with her listings. "One day he told me they charged over 200 percent of the actual cost. I was shocked at the markup. But then I started thinking why not offer people the same furniture but charge less?"
That realization has led to a thriving eBay business. Leung now employs five people, owns both a warehouse and showroom, and is continually expanding her product line, which includes everything from recliners and wine racks to coffee tables and reproduction Tiffany lamps.
In part, Leung credits the success of her operation to her eBay Store. For one, it has enabled her to communicate a clear value proposition to her customers: "Our prices are 60-75% off your local furniture retailers," reads her store homepage.
Her store also has allowed her to increase her company's volume (store listings are just five cents a piece) and reach a second market that prefers the convenience of buying immediately at a fixed price. That means higher product turnover and increased cash flow.
To drive awareness for her store and increase fixed-price sales, Leung often lists multiples of an item simultaneously, some as fixed-price items in her store, others as auction-style listings. In the latter, she encourages buyers to purchase the item from her store immediately at an equivalent or higher Buy It Now price.
This sort of cross-promotion pays dividends for Doja and its customers, says Leung. The company sells more merchandise faster and its buyers receive their products sooner. Currently, about 30% to 40% of Doja's sales occur through its eBay Store, but Leung says she would like to see that number increase even further.
"I'm trying to get to the point where I'm generating most of my business from my eBay Store," she adds. "It's a great tool."
