Knowing Your Buyer

eBay wants to make sure all your sales are safe and successful. eBay requires buyers to follow some important rules when making transactions. Here are some hints to help your sale go smoothly.

  • Know how to obtain a buyer’s User ID, or contact information.

  • Learn about limitations you can place on buyers.

  • Review high bidder’s and buyer's Feedback and user information in their Feedback Profile. If the bidder has an icon next to their User ID, see the chart.

Icon

Meaning

PowerSellers are eBay top sellers who have sustained a consistent high volume of monthly sales and who have a high level of Feedback (98% positive or better).

The user has created an About Me page to tell you more about themselves. Click this icon to open the About Me page. Learn more about creating an About Me page.

The user has been ID Verified. When a member gets ID Verified, a third-party company working with eBay confirms the member's identity by cross-checking their contact information across consumer and business databases. Learn more about ID Verify.

The user has been a registered eBay user for 30 days or less.

The user has changed their User ID within the last 30 days.

Request a buyer’s User ID

  • For privacy reasons eBay limits the use of this feature to those members who have completed a previous transaction with the member whose User ID is being requested.

  • If you only know a buyer's email address and need to find their User ID, use the Find a Member feature. This feature is useful if you receive emails from buyers who have not specified their User ID and you cannot locate their listing.

  • If eBay cannot determine a transactional relationship, you should request that the buyer send you their User ID using email.

Request a buyer’s contact information

Like you, buyers sometimes have emergencies, illnesses, or computer problems. If your buyer has mostly positive feedback with little or no mention of problems, be patient. Your buyer may not be able to respond to you right away for legitimate reasons.

  • If you don't get an email response, you can request your buyer's phone number. Sometimes a phone call helps make communication easier.

  • If your item was a regular listing that ended without a reserve price or a Reserve Price Auction where the reserve is met and you are unable to contact your winning buyer, your listing may fall under eBay's Unpaid Item Policy. This policy will tell you how to request a fee credit from eBay if your buyer does not pay.

  • If you have you requested your buyer's contact information and it is not valid, please review our contact information policies.

Limits on Buyers

For each of your listings you can limit which buyers may bid on or purchase your items. You can create your own list of eBay members who will no longer be permitted to bid or buy any of your listings. Before blocking a buyer, eBay recommends that you email him or her and clearly state why you will not accept bids or Buy It Now purchases from him or her in the future. Learn about Managing Bidders and Buyers.

You can also set up buyer requirements for your listings by going to the Seller Preferences section in My eBay. These requirements are based on characteristics, rather than specific User IDs. For example, you can block all buyers that have a negative Feedback score.
