Business Equipment Purchase Protection Program – How to File a Claim

If you have read and understand all of the program requirements including the Business Equipment Purchase Protection Coverage and Eligibility pages, and you believe the Business Equipment Purchase Protection program can help you, then follow these steps.

To begin a claim:
  1. Try to work things out with the seller first. This must be done before any further steps can be taken and is often productive as most eBay Business sellers address buyer complaints quickly and fairly. To contact your trading partner, go to the Find Members page and fill in the requested fields appropriately.

  2. Review the Eligibility Checklist and Claims Process to understand if and how you qualify for the Business Equipment Purchase Protection program. If you still suspect fraud and have gone through Steps 1 and 3, contact eBay Customer Support via email. eBay Customer Support will offer options based on the details of the incident. Some instances are better handled being reported to the Better Business Bureau, for instance.

  3. Send an email to eBay Customer Support between 14 and 30 days of your listing's ending date, and no more than 3 days after your receipt of the item. The email should include the closed item number and a brief description of why you are filing the complaint. A copy of your complaint will be sent to the seller via email as notification that a complaint has been filed. Your seller will then have the opportunity to respond to your complaint. This may help bring about a resolution. Simple misunderstandings are often resolved through direct communication. Please make every attempt to resolve your complaint by contacting your seller by email or phone

  4. eBay Customer Support will offer options based on the details of the incident.

  5. If you are unable to resolve your complaint after communicating with eBay Customer Support, you will be sent an email that contains a claim form and instructions on how to submit a claim subject to the Business Equipment Purchase Protection program.

  6. Complete the claim and submit it directly to the Business Equipment Purchase Protection third party provider within 30 days of the end of the listing, and no more than 3 days after your receipt of the item. The third party provider will investigate and resolve the incident. Exceptions to this rule are stolen items and undisclosed liens, for which you will have up to 6 months to file a claim. The terms of the Business Equipment Purchase Protection program specified on this page at the time that you purchased your vehicle will apply. eBay reserves the right to change the terms of the Business Equipment Purchase Protection program at any time.

Settlement process requirements

  • Any failure by the buyer to follow the steps, as outlined by the third party provider, and any action taken by the buyer without the third party provider's consent that impairs the third party provider's ability or rights to mitigate any potential loss, will void coverage under the Business Equipment Purchase Protection program.

  • You will need to have documentation of all payments (full or deposit).

  • In cases of undisclosed damage, the third party provider will instruct the buyer on the proper steps to take to substantiate and document the damage to the item. You will be required to provide repair estimates from at least two properly licensed repair facilities, OEM service divisions, or other industry expert as approved by the third party provider. You must obtain and submit to the third party provider an estimate for the repair of any claimed damage included in your claim within 14 days from the date the claim was filed. Failure to do so in the appropriate time frame will void coverage under the Business Equipment Purchase Protection program.

  • The third party provider has the right to have an inspection of the item conducted at any time during the claim process.

  • If the seller offers you a settlement equal to or better than what the third party provider determines you are due under the program and you refuse to accept the seller's offer, any coverage you may have under the program is voided.

  • The processing of your claim will be completed within 30 days of receipt. In the interim, it is recommended that you not discard, alter or resell any merchandise related to your claim. You and your seller will be contacted directly about the outcome.

Coverage limits

  • Business Equipment Purchase Protection will only cover up to the devaluation or repair amount of the item or the final winning bid amount, whichever is lower, plus shipping expenses up to $800 (documented by an invoice from a licensed transport or shipping company) and deposits, if applicable.

  • In cases of undisclosed damage, the damage amount will be determined by the lower of all repair estimates from authorized service facilities approved by the third party provider.

  • In the event of type, make, or model misrepresentation, the devaluation amount of the vehicle will be determined by the difference between the eBay purchase price and the price established by a value guidebook designated by the third party provider.

  • On any covered claim, eBay's third party provider has the option to reimburse the lesser of the purchase price less the deductible or the coverage maximum ($20,000) and take possession of the item rather than paying the devaluation or repair amount. If you refuse this offer, then the third party provider may offer you a cash settlement of a discounted percentage of the purchase price.

  • Stolen items are subject to an additional 1% per month depreciation rate until the time the claim is filed.
