Selling to benefit nonprofits: eBay Giving Works

eBay Giving Works is the program that helps sellers list items on eBay to benefit nonprofits. Any eBay seller who has an account in good standing can create an eBay Giving Works listing. The program is administered by MissionFish, a licensed nonprofit organization.

There are two types of sellers:

  • eBay Community Seller: Individual eBay sellers who want to donate 10% to 100% (or at least 1% for eBay Motors vehicle sales) of their final sale price to a certified nonprofit. Learn more about Community Selling.

  • Nonprofit Direct Seller: Nonprofits certified by MissionFish can sell their own items on eBay and collect 100% of their final sale price. Nonprofit Direct Sellers create their eBay Giving Works listings with the same selling forms as Community Sellers. Learn more about Nonprofit Direct Selling.

Important: Nonprofit Direct Sellers must register with MissionFish before completing their listing.

Things to know before you list

eBay Giving Works has certain restricted categories

You can’t create eBay Giving Works listings in the Real Estate Classified Ads format or Adult Only categories, or offer items such as raffle or lottery tickets. For a complete list of restricted categories, see our list of prohibited and restricted items.

Because charitable fundraising is a highly regulated area, we’ve created a charity and fundraising policy with specific guidelines for charitable activity.

Because its logo will appear in your listing, the nonprofit you select is able to control this implicit endorsement of you as a seller and of your products.

When you create a listing benefiting that nonprofit, the nonprofit is automatically notified. The nonprofit will ask us to cancel your listing if it doesn’t want to be associated with the listing. If this happens, we’ll credit back your insertion fee and you’ll receive a brief explanation of why the listing was canceled. You can relist this item for another nonprofit, or list it outside of the eBay Giving Works program (that is, not benefiting any nonprofit).

Paying and receiving credit for eBay fees

Sellers pay standard eBay fees for eBay Giving Works listings. To support your generosity, eBay gives a prorated fee credit to sellers who make a donation from an eBay Giving Works listing. The credit is prorated according to the percentage you committed to donate.

MissionFish retains a small portion of each donation to offset some costs of their administration services.

Your minimum donation

If your eBay Giving Works item sells, you're required to donate either the percentage of the final selling price that you selected, or $1, whichever is greater.

The donation minimum might be different on other eBay (international) sites.

If you list for a foreign nonprofit, your donation payment method must be PayPal, Visa, or MasterCard. This lets the nonprofit receive your donation in its local currency. Some charges may apply to international transactions.

Ways to create an eBay Giving Works listing

Including eBay Giving Works in your auction-style or fixed-price listing

To list an item that supports a nonprofit:
  1. In the Sell Your Item form, go to the eBay Giving Works section.

  2. Select a nonprofit from the options provided or click the Or, select another nonprofit you love link to search for a nonprofit by name or keyword, state, nonprofit type (such as Education), or cause (such as Helping Animals).

  3. Select a percentage from the Donation percentage drop-down menu.

  4. Read and accept the terms and conditions.

  5. Check the box below the terms and conditions if you’d like us to share your contact details with the nonprofit you support.

  6. Complete the listing form as instructed.

Paying your committed donations

If your eBay Giving Works listing is the first eBay listing you have created, you'll be asked to provide a method of payment for eBay fees and donations when you complete the listing form. You can change your donation payment method at any time. If you have overdue donations or if your donation payment method has expired, you won't be able to create new eBay Giving Works listings until you resolve these issues.

For more information on how to make donations, change your donation payment method, get tax receipts, and more, visit the Donation Account section in My eBay.

Using Turbo Lister, Blackthorne, and other selling tools

Check with your selling tool provider to see if your selling tool offers eBay Giving Works.

To use eBay Giving Works through a selling tool:
  1. Go to the Donation Account section of My eBay.

  2. Click the Agree to eBay Giving Works Terms & Conditions link. This will authorize the use of your eBay payment method as your donation payment method. You can change your donation payment method inside the Donation Account section of My eBay.

  3. Create your eBay Giving Works listing by following the instructions from your selling tool provider.

Once your eBay Giving Works listing is live, the charity icon will appear next to your listing's title in eBay search and in the listing. Information about the nonprofit you've selected and the amount you're donating will also appear in the listing. These features make eBay Giving Works listings stand out.

Finding a nonprofit to support

Thousands of nonprofits are certified to benefit from eBay Giving Works listings. You can find your favorite in the nonprofit directory by browsing or searching. If you don't see the nonprofit of your choice, you can invite a nonprofit to benefit from eBay Giving Works.

Browse

In the Sell Your Item form, go to the eBay Giving Works section, and then click the Or, select another nonprofit you love link. You can search for a nonprofit by clicking any letter in the Browse by Name bar. You'll see an alphabetic list of all certified nonprofits that start with that letter.

Search

In the Sell Your Item form, go to the eBay Giving Works section, and then click the Or, select another nonprofit you love link. You can search for a nonprofit using any of the fields below. Combine fields to narrow your search results.

  • Nonprofit name or keyword: Search the nonprofit's name or any keywords that describe it. Nonprofit names starting with a symbol or numeral are listed under "#". Nonprofits that list their names in all capital letters appear higher up in the alphabetic list.

  • State: Find nonprofits based on where they're located (not necessarily where they serve).

  • Nonprofit type: Select a category that describes the cause the nonprofit supports.

  • Spotlight: Find nonprofits that focus on a specific cause.

Invite a nonprofit
