Using the quick listing tool

Starting your listing

The quick listing tool helps you create your listing by providing guidance on how to price and ship your item. Tell us what you're selling, and we'll give you specific suggestions based on similar items that have sold on eBay.

Get started by entering a few words that describe your item. What is it, and what are its most important features? The more accurate your description, the better we'll be able to identify your item and give you specific help along the way.

Tips:

  • If you have a product number (such as an ISBN or UPC), try entering that instead.

  • If you're having trouble coming up with the right words, get things going with just a few keywords. We'll try to show you related suggestions.

Based on what you enter, we'll help you select the category where your item will be listed.

Creating your listing from a similar item

Creating a listing from a similar item saves time because most of the information is already filled in for you.

To create a listing from a similar item:
  1. After you tell us what you're selling and select a category, we may show you other items like yours.

  2. To get better results, click the Enter details to find a good match link and then use the drop-down menus to select details that apply to your item. Keep in mind that the items you see won't necessarily be identical to yours—you're just trying to find one that's similar enough to work from.

  3. If you see a good match, click the Sell one like this link. We'll pull some of the information from the similar item so that you can use it in your listing. You'll be able to add or edit information.

If you don't see the right item to work with, don't worry—you can still quickly create a listing from scratch. You'll just need to fill in a little more information yourself.

Adding photos

Photos are a key part of any successful listing. Buyers can instantly recognize what you're selling in search results, and then take a closer look in your listing. Using lots of great pictures can help a buyer feel confident about buying your item.

You can add up to 12 photos for free.

Tips:

  • Depending on what you're selling, we may provide a stock photo of the item. This is especially useful if your item is a common product, such as a book or DVD.

  • If you take your own photos, use natural light and show the item against a plain background. Take pictures from different angles so buyers can see the actual condition of the item. Consider adding pictures to show details or flaws. Learn more about taking great photos.

Setting a price

If you want to sell your item to the highest bidder, create an auction-style listing. If you'd rather offer your item at a specific price (with no bidding), choose fixed price and set the price at which buyers can purchase your item right away. 

Tip: An auction-style listing is the best option for most items listed using the quick listing tool.

To create an auction-style listing:
  1. Enter a starting price for your item. This is the price at which bidding will begin.

  2. If you want to also set a price at which you're willing to sell the item, select Buy It Now, and then enter a Buy It Now price. A buyer who commits to paying this price gets the item, and the listing ends immediately.

  3. If you create a fixed price listing, you can choose the Best Offer option to give buyers a chance to negotiate the price with you. Each Best Offer is good for up to 48 hours. Best Offer may not be available in all categories.

Tips:

  • Sometimes you'll see a link to find out how other sellers have priced similar items. Click it if you want more pricing guidance. We'll show you how high the bidding has gone on similar items and the fixed prices that other sellers have set.

  • Select a listing duration that allows your listing to be active over an entire weekend—that's when many buyers shop on eBay.

  • If you don't want to start the listing right away, you can pick the date and time you want the listing to start.

Selecting shipping

When possible, we'll automatically offer you shipping options, including package type, shipping service and cost, that most sellers have chosen for similar items.

Tip: Buyers like free shipping. You may want to offer this in your listing to increase your chances of a sale.

You can also create your own shipping option.

  • Charge a flat shipping cost if you want shipping to be the same for all buyers, regardless of where the item will be shipped.

  • Charge actual cost if you want the cost to be automatically determined by where it's being shipped and other factors, such as weight, size, and package type.

  • If you want more guidance, look at other listings to see how sellers are shipping items like yours.
