Specifying Flat Shipping Costs

How it works

For most items, you can specify a single, fixed cost that can reasonably cover the locations you're willing to ship to by selecting the Flat: Same cost to all buyers option. The cost will be shown in your listing and included automatically in the payment total when the winning buyer goes through the checkout process.

Example

Suppose you live in New York and determine that it costs $3.50 to ship an item to Chicago and $5.00 to ship the item to Los Angeles. You could charge a flat cost of $5.00 to cover the most expensive case, or you could charge a lower amount that would cover most locations in order to attract more buyers.

Note: In certain categories, your total shipping cost needs to be less than or equal to the maximum cost that appears under the area where you enter your shipping cost. The maximum shipping cost helps buyer find items with reasonable shipping and helps you sell more items and increase overall sales.

What you need to provide

  • Specify the shipping services that you offer. You can offer up to three U.S. and three international services.

  • Enter a cost for each shipping service. If there is a maximum shipping cost in your category, the first U.S. shipping cost you enter can't be more than that amount.

  • If you have a multiple item listing, you can also enter a different shipping cost for each additional item a buyer purchases.

Tips for determining the cost

  • Click the Research rates link. If you know the approximate weight and size of your packaged item, you can get an idea of what the costs will be for various shipping services and destinations. For more exact shipping costs, weigh and measure your package carefully.

  • Search on eBay for items like yours and see what other sellers are charging to ship the item. Specify a shipping cost that is competitive with other sellers in the same category.
