Advantages of becoming ID Verified

ID Verify establishes your proof of identity, which helps both buyers and sellers feel confident trading with each other.

When you become ID Verified, you can:

The ID Verify icon  in a member’s profile shows that they have been ID Verified.

How ID Verify works

We contract with a third party company to confirm your identity by cross checking your contact information against consumer and business databases. The information you provide to eBay and the third party company is used for verification purposes only. The ID Verify process is not a credit check and has no effect on your credit rating.

In the U.S. we verify your information through Equifax. Other third party companies are used in different countries, and there is a slight difference in their processes. For example, in Germany, we verify members through Deutsche, who checks your ID, transmits the personal data to a form, and sends this form with your signature to eBay. All countries use the same ID Verify icon.

Note: The process for becoming PayPal Verified is a separate process. Becoming ID Verified offers benefits not available in PayPal, and you can be both PayPal Verified and ID Verified.

Requirements, limitations, and fees

To become ID Verified, we’ll ask that you:

  • Reside in the United States or U.S. territories (Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, and Guam).

  • Provide your home address, not your company’s address.

  • Pay a $5.00 application fee. When you have successfully been ID Verified, a one-time fee is charged to your eBay account. You are charged this fee only if you become ID Verified.

  • Provide your name and date of birth, and identify certain installment and credit accounts and their associated monthly payments.

  • Wait 30 days after you become ID Verified to change your contact information. If you choose to change your contact information after the 30-day period, your ID Verify icon and status will be removed and you must complete the verification process again, and pay the $5.00 application fee.

Note: Changing your user ID won’t require your account to be re-verified and won’t incur an additional charge.

Signing up for ID Verify

To become ID Verified:
  1. Have your credit information ready.

  2. Go to the ID Verify page and then click the “Sign up now” link.

  3. Read and accept the terms. Agree to pay a $5.00 application fee.

  4. Review your eBay contact information on the Verify Account Information page, and update if necessary.

  5. Answer the verification questions to confirm your identity.

Note: If you were required to fax additional information, it can take several days for your ID Verify icon to appear.

If you don’t pass: Verify that the information you entered is correct. The information might not have matched due to a clerical error. Not passing ID Verify will not affect your credit rating. If you don’t pass, you won’t be charged a fee.

Why ID Verify is safe

Your privacy is important. Here’s how we help keep your information secure.

  • We help protect your information with a secure 128-bit encrypted SSL connection.

  • We retain only your contact information and date of birth. We don’t store the information you provide during the ID Verify process, such as your driver's license numbers.

  • Equifax doesn’t update the information that you provide through eBay, but only compares it against existing information in their files to verify your identity.

  • Equifax can’t add information to their database that recognizes you as an eBay member, or that marks you as having gone through the ID Verify process except for auditing purposes, as required by law. They can’t make any notation in their database that the information provided was confirmed (or not) with the information in their databases.

  • Though the ID Verify process is not a credit check, you’re asked questions involving your credit information. Only you know the answers to questions about your credit. Therefore, asking credit questions is a security measure that helps protect you from someone else attempting to get verified with your information.
