End of Auction Email - Frequently Asked Questions

What changes are you making to the End of Auction Email?

We are changing the email to provide clearer instructions to buyers and sellers about what to do next. To accomplish this, we are doing the following:
  • Changing the layout and appearance of the email.
  • Providing buttons for buyers to pay, checkout, or request the total. These only appear if the seller offers Checkout for the listing.
  • Prominently displaying the seller's Payment Instructions.
  • Indicating in the subject line if the listing was successful.
  • We are NOT removing any information from the email.

You can see the examples below for exact email changes.

Why are you making these changes?

We are making these changes so that the End of Auction email will be clearer and more helpful. By changing the layout and appearance of the email, it will be easier for buyers and sellers to complete the sale after the auction closes.

Are you making changes to the way eBay Payments appears in the email?

Yes, if a seller offers eBay Payments for an item, this will be displayed prominently to the buyer. eBay Payments will ONLY be displayed in the email if the seller offers it for the item.

Do these changes apply to both text and HTML versions?

Yes, these changes are being made to all End of Auction emails.

Will I still receive the same format (HTML or text) emails?

Most users will continue to receive the same type of email they receive today.

However, if you are using AOL version 5.0 or below (AOL 5.0, 4.0, 3.02, 3.0), you will soon receive text-only emails as eBay will no longer provide HTML emails for these AOL versions. As a result, links contained within these emails will no longer be "clickable". To continue receiving emails in HTML where all links are "clickable", please upgrade your AOL version. The upgrade is free.

End of Auction Email Examples:

The End of Auction email will appear differently depending on the options the seller offers for the item. The main options that affect the email are:

  • Is eBay Payments on?
  • Is Checkout on?
  • Are Shipping Costs specified?

Most of the differences between emails occur in the top part of the email where there are instructions to buyers and sellers. Please note that there are numerous variations of the email (e.g. for multiple-item listings, eBay Motors listings, etc.), but the main variations are shown below.

Example 1: Seller to collect payment directly from buyer; Shipping Costs NOT Specified Example 2: Seller accepts eBay Payments; Shipping Costs Specified

Example 3: Seller accepts other forms of payment through Checkout; Shipping Costs Specified

Example 4: Seller accepts eBay Payments through Checkout; Shipping Costs NOT specified
