Buying an eBay Giving Works item

If you win an eBay Giving Works listing, pay the seller following their payment instructions (just like any eBay listing).

eBay has selected MissionFish, a nonprofit, to administer the eBay Giving Works program. MissionFish will collect the donation from the seller and forward it to the nonprofit, retaining a small portion to offset some costs of their services.

Note: When you buy from a nonprofit selling on its own behalf (Nonprofit Direct Selling), you are paying the nonprofit directly. MissionFish does not process a donation or retain a portion of this transaction.

Tax deductions for buyers

Generally, you cannot claim a tax deduction for eBay Giving Works items you buy. However, there is one possible exception:

If the item you purchased was sold by a Nonprofit Direct Seller, and the item description clearly states the fair market value of the item and your final sale price exceeds the fair market value of the item, then any amount you paid (excluding shipping) above the fair market value of the item could potentially be treated as a donation to the nonprofit. Note: eBay cannot and does not act as a tax advisor. You should consult your accountant or legal counsel about your specific circumstances.
