eBay: Collectibles

Displaying Your Collection

Keep all collectibles away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, excessive moisture, dirt, and anything else that corrodes most items. Keep collectibles away from radiators and air conditioners.

It you must store them, try to keep them away from too much heat, dryness, or dampness. The most common storage places are often the worst: a garage, attic, or basement. If possible, store at room temperature. A closet or spare room usually works well.

There are thousands of collectibles, each with its own needs and care precautions. Research the specifics of storing your collectibles on an item-by-item basis until you become accustomed to the care required. Here are some general guidelines:

Textiles: Do not display in plastic or store in a drycleaning bag, even if the item has been freshly drycleaned. Over time, the plastic can cause damage. Use a paper bag, a pillow case, a sheet, or buy a garment bag that breathes and has enough room for good air circulation.

Paper: Never tape, paste, or cut a paper collectible. If you display or store in plastic sleeves, make sure the plastic is acid free. If you have a paper collectible professionally framed, ask for an acid-free mat and an ultraviolet (UV) filtering lens. For restoration, request that the work be archival or museum quality.

Any breakable item: Always display fragile collectibles higher than a child can reach or animal can jump. Set breakables firmly in the center or toward the back of a shelf. Something as simple as vibrations from walking across a floor will cause items to shift over time. If the collectibles are kept near the edge, they may fall. Remove your jewelry while handling. For items that may be damaged by skin oils, wear clean cotton gloves while handling. Handle only one item at a time.
