Major Categories in Beanies and Plush ToysBy Myrtle CecilTechnically, all stuffed animals are called "plush." The Ty® Company Inc. is among the most recognized brand name in stuffed toys, along with Disney, Gund, Applause, and Warner Brothers. The Ty product line is an example of major categories within one company. The following is an overview of the many collectibles currently available on the retail and secondary markets. Attic Collectibles are ball-jointed animals, and the majority of them come dressed (for example, Grover the Bear sports corduroy overalls). Beanie Babies are small stuffed toys (with the exception of one or two) filled with polyfill and PVC/or PE pellets. Beanie Buddies are similar to Beanie Babies; however, they are made with a heavier fabric called "Tylon." Pillow Pals are very popular in families who have children under the age of 3 since they contain no small pellets. Ty Plush is the term used to describe the larger stuffed animals. Very lifelike in some cases, Ty Plush animals are created from a variety of fabrics (from long furry to short nappy fabric). Among the most popular Ty Plush toys are Sally Winey designs, and some of the older retired animals. For example, Himalayan cats are quite rare and command a high secondary market value. The Ty Company retires items from all categories and introduces new releases to the line regularly, which adds to the secondary market value.
