Major categories in antiques Antiques can be categorized in many different ways. Since it is nearly impossible to find an optimal classification for antiques, we decided to highlight eBay's antique categories and try to give you a flavor of what is typically in each category. The General category refers to items that do not fit in the categories below, but are pre-1900. The Antiques (Post-1900) category is for items that are generally from the early 20th century. Books, Manuscripts - These are books and manuscripts that are pre-1900. Books or manuscripts from the 1900s should probably be listed in the Books, Movies, Music category. Some pre-1900 books are also listed in the Books, Movies, Music category, so interested bidders may want to check that category as well. Folk Art - Folk art is a term that has been used in the United States since the late 1800s. The term was originally used in Europe to refer to the arts of peasant communities in the Middle Ages, including ceremonial, decorative, or utilitarian arts. Today, the term is used in the United States to refer to artwork by artists who are outside of mainstream art, far from the realms of fine art academies. The artists are often self-taught and arrived at their art through unconventional means. Metalware - Metalware includes silverware, pots, tins, doorknobs, or any objects made of metal, typically pre-1900. Musical Instruments - The Antiques category has musical instruments that are usually pre-1900. Non-antique musical instruments can be found in the Miscellaneous category. Science Instruments - This category includes compasses, microscopes, dental tools, physician instruments, barometers, and laboratory instruments. Textiles, Linens - This category includes quilts, clothing, rugs, needlepoint, crocheted items, lace, handkerchiefs, and pillow covers. |
