Quick Wins To Increase Your Holiday Sales
by Katie
eBay Seller Development Team
We are entering into what is traditionally the busiest time of the year for sellers - the holiday shopping season. I know that many of you prefer not to make any major changes at this time of the year to the way you run your eBay business. Instead, most sellers will agree, now is the time to stay focused on listing and selling.
However, there are still relatively minor, yet smart and effective, changes you can make to your holiday selling strategy that can go a long way towards improving your holiday sales. I call these little tweaks “Quick Wins.” You can usually make these changes in a matter of mere minutes, but they can result in significant increases to your sales.
Here are some tips on how to create a successful return policy for your items:
Encourage communication - Encourage the buyer to contact you first before actually returning the item.
Restocking fee - Mention if you will charge a restocking fee on returned items and, if so, what it would be.
Shipping and handling charges - Clearly state who would pay for return shipping and handling--you or the buyer.
Item condition - Clearly indicate the condition of the returned item that would be acceptable to you. For example, include in your return policy whether you'll accept an “unopened box” or “opened box with all original materials.”

Here's my list of the top Quick Wins:
- Offer specials on combined purchases
You can drive multiple purchases and increase your sales volume by offering specials on combined purchases. For example, you could offer free gift wrap or free shipping on combined purchases of $100 or more.
- Offer a return policy
One of the unfortunate sides of holiday gift-giving is that sometimes people don't like the gifts they receive. That's why gift buyers want to be reassured that they can return items purchased with the intention of gifting. Having a clear return policy on your listings is a proven way to build buyer trust, increase sales, and set you apart from the competition—often with a minimum of actual returned items.
- Offer convenient shipping options for holiday shoppers
Clearly state your shipping policies and deadlines in all of your listings. Remember that shipping times are especially important for gift buyers in the holiday season, so state your shipping deadlines upfront in your listings for buyers who want to ensure their gift arrives before December 25th.
Another holiday sales quick win would be offering to ship the item directly to the gift recipient. Just ask your buyer to send you the shipping address of the gift recipient.
- Suggest different ways in which buyers can gift your items
Gift buyers will often search eBay for items in areas that they know their loved ones enjoy, but might not be sure which items make the best gifts. In your item descriptions, you can make suggestions that give buyers additional reasons to purchase your items. For example, saying that the Nike golf carry bag you’re offering is the “Perfect Gift for Your Favorite Golfer” could give an uncertain gift shopper the confidence they need to buy your item as a gift.
Visual cues can also remind buyers that your items can make thoughtful gifts for their loved ones. For example, choosing a seasonal Listing Designer template on your listings can help put buyers in the holiday shopping mindset.
- Schedule your own free business consultation with eBay’s Seller Outreach team
You can talk to a member of eBay’s Seller Outreach team on the phone and discuss ways of improving your selling effectiveness on eBay. When you receive your call, the Seller Outreach representative will review your listings and eBay Store with you and help provide easy, actionable suggestions on how you can increase your effectiveness on eBay. To schedule a Seller Outreach call, send an email request to sellergrowth@ebay.com.
I hope these Quick Wins help boost your sales in the holiday shopping season! |
