eBay in Person: Jackie Nelson
How long have you worked at eBay?
I've worked for eBay for 6-1/2 years, working 1-1/2 of those years remotely from northern Wyoming. I moved to Salt Lake City 5 years ago to work in the Customer Support center. I've always been with Customer Support. My early days were spent answering member queries on the live boards (anyone remember those?) as well as member email.
Describe your area of responsibility.
For the past 5 years, my primary responsibility has revolved around addressing billing issues that affect sellers and their selling accounts. I act as a liaison between various internal eBay organizations to ensure that billing issues, requirements, and communication (both internally and to members) are understood and addressed.
What skills have you found yourself utilizing most in your career at eBay?
The skill that I've learned to utilize the most is flexibility! eBay is a very dynamic site. We have to be able to address situations that occur in the present as well as anticipate those that may occur in the future.
What are some of your most memorable eBay moments?
Some of my most memorable moments occurred when I was directly interacting with the members on the live boards. I'll never forget the gentle guidance one person gave me when I instructed a member on how to change their physical street mailing address, instead of their e-mail address, on eBay.
What do you like to do for fun?
I love to play and work with my four Rottweilers and my German Shepherd/Rottweiler cross. They are my babies. Second to that, I enjoy spending time with my family and close friends as well as reading books of different genres.
What is your favorite item that you bought or sold on eBay?
There have been so many it's hard to narrow it down to just one! I collect Rottweiler 'stuff' so those are my favorite items.
Who are your role models?
Many people have played an important role in my life. My grandmother is a role model to me for her never-ending patience (which I still haven't mastered!). My grandfather is, too, for an exceptionally intelligent and highly knowledgeable man, who gained most of his "learning" by being self-taught. Also, one of my former managers is a role model for teaching me so much, directly and indirectly, about how to most effectively function in a corporate environment.
What's unique about working at eBay?
Working in Customer Support at eBay gives me the opportunity to interact with employees all over the world. I get to learn about the different 'mini' communities and their cultural differences that make up the entire global eBay Community. It's exciting to share experiences and opportunities with others around the world and to come together to make the whole eBay community a better, more integrated place.
