Help with the User Agreement
by Maeve
eBay Staff Member

The eBay User Agreement contains the policies that govern activity on the site. Each member agrees to abide by these policies during the registration process.

The User Agreement spells out your relationship with eBay, as well as the terms and conditions under which eBay offers you access to its services. The policies range from those that outline appropriate posting behavior, to those that govern the content of listings. Ultimately, they are designed to help all members have a positive experience while visiting eBay.

At first glance the policies may seem a bit daunting, but there is help to be found! The Policies - User Agreement Discussion Board provides an ongoing forum for people to ask questions about specific policies and how they are applied to activity on eBay. The Answer Center also contains a Policy / User Agreement Board where expert members answer questions.

Learning to implement the policies appropriately is key to a successful career on eBay. Member nevrwhere had this to say about understanding the User Agreement:

"The best advice is to schedule one hour some day and actually read the thing. So many buyers and sellers just move right through it when registering and never look at it again until of course something goes wrong. They also need to read about all the prohibited items etc. … I know it's a dream to have all read it and be familiar with it. A crib sheet would be nice."

Member cogicreate, a regular on the Help Discussion Boards, offered these tips for getting familiar with the terms of the User Agreement:

"Visit the Policies-User Agreement board even if you don't have a question. Sometimes questions I've never thought to ask have been covered on that board.

"Ask before acting. I've lost count of the number of times someone asks a question after they have made a bid or listed an auction, rather than before bidding or listing.

"When in doubt, ask! Delaying an auction listing or a bid is better than getting nailed for a policy violation, or getting burned by a seller who is violating policy.

"If you find a policy violation, contact eBay rather than the person committing the violation. My understanding is that the identity of the person who reports policy violations is kept confidential."

Our thanks to the supportive members who spend time answering questions on these two important boards!
