eBay Great Collections Co-Sponsors Fundraising Event and Features Works From Bay Area and National Artists

SAN JOSE, Calif., December 3, 1999—eBay Great Collections, a premium collectibles category available on eBay® (NASDAQ: EBAY; www.ebay.com), the world's leading person-to-person online trading community, is co-sponsoring the 15th Annual Auction of New Langton Arts, a San Francisco nonprofit organization that provides professional support to contemporary artists As part of a week-long fundraising event, called Future Shock, local Bay Area and national artists are participating in New Langton Arts' auctions in live, silent and, for the first time, online auction formats, opening up the event to art enthusiasts outside of the Bay Area. More than 50 pieces of artwork are available on eBay Great Collections (www.ebaygreatcollections.com), beginning tonight at midnight and closing at midnight on December 10, 1999.

"We're thrilled that our sponsorship of New Langton Arts allows us to support local Bay Area artists and present their work to our growing community of art enthusiasts and collectors on eBay Great Collections," said Steve Westly, senior vice president and general manager of international and premium services.

For the first time, Future Shock artworks will be available online for interested bidders who live outside of the Bay Area or would like to participate from the comfort of their own homes. Future Shock Online includes a vivid sampling of Langton's auction artworks offered on eBay Great Collections, including work by such artists as John Alexander, Connie Hatch, and Scott Lifshutz, among many other notable artists. Computers will also be available throughout the week in Langton's Gallery for bidding online.

"eBay's involvement in Future Shock opens up an entirely new avenue of exposure for contemporary artists," said Susan Miller, executive director of New Langton Arts. "eBay Great Collections expands New Langton's visibility and audience."

"eBay Great Collections lets people outside of the Bay Area, such as a collector in New York, check out the New Langton artwork," said Terry Hoff, an artist featuring one of his paintings on eBay Great Collections. "People who live too far away to [have] bid in past New Langton auctions, now can."

Langton's Annual Auction attracts patrons, collectors, and holiday shoppers seeking exceptional artwork from well-known and emerging contemporary artists. Proceeds from Future Shock make up a considerable portion of Langton's annual budget. Future Shock is open to the public for previewing and online and silent bidding from December 4 through December 9, 1999 at Langton's Gallery.

The week's activities culminate on the evening of Thursday, December 9. Patrick Meade, president of Butterfield & Butterfield, one of the world's oldest and largest auction houses, which was acquired last Spring by eBay, will conduct the Future Shock live auction. The event begins at 6 p.m. with live music and food. Tickets and more information are available by calling 415-626-5416.

eBay Great Collections Hosts Sale of Antiques from Liberty of London

Pewter, Victorian Jewelry and Eames Furniture Now Available Online

SAN JOSE, Calif. December 14, 1999—eBay Great Collections (www.ebaygreatcollections.com), the fine art, premium collectibles and rare antiques trading area on eBay® (NASDAQ: EBAY; www.ebay.com), today announced that Liberty—one of the most distinctive and innovative decorative retailers in London UK — has put unique items up for sale on eBay Great Collections. Merchandise listed includes rare English pewter, Victorian jewelry and a world-class collection of sixties' furniture from the masters of modern design, Charles and Ray Eames. Listing these items, Liberty also became an official dealer on eBay Great Collections.

"Liberty is world famous for its commitment to quality and design excellence and has made a unique contribution to the decorative arts," said Steve Westly, senior vice president and general manager of premium services at eBay. "eBay Great Collections offers the first chance for collectors in United States and around the world to bid on unique items that represent the best in design — from the Victorian era through to the 1960s."

"Liberty has an unrivalled reputation for innovative design and the older pieces have been carefully selected for their fine craftsmanship. Many were originally commissioned by Mr. Liberty himself from the finest designers of the era including Archibald Knox and Oliver Baker," said Andrew Thatcher, brand director of Liberty. "The furniture comes from a special gathering in our London store of the best of the sixties furniture — modern collectibles — and is a rare occasion to purchase sets of these items. The sixties were a time of great artistic creativity at Liberty and we are delighted to return to those times with these pieces."

The work of Charles and Ray Eames has become hot property since appearing on the set of popular NBC sit-com Frasier. Their work is being featured in an exhibition at the National Design Museum in New York and their chairs are now considered to be icons of the sixties. The auction will also include furniture by other influential designers such as Arne Jacobsen, Verner Panton and Robin Day.

Liberty pewter and silver was created during the late Victorian period, pioneered by artist Archibald Knox. His work spans both the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau movements and features enamel and turquoise inlays. His masterpiece, a silver rose bowl, is now part of the Brad Pitt Collection, currently touring Japan in the Liberty Style exhibition.

A collection of antique jewelry dating from the late 1800's completes this sale. The star piece from this collection is a stunning diamond, opal and pearl brooch c.1910. Other pieces include an original Liberty pendant c.1912.

"Once the gifts are unwrapped and the new computers are turned on, we hope that people will soon find their way to eBay," said Brian Swette, eBay's COO. "As friends and family gather for holiday festivities, conversations may turn to the Internet and to eBay. Thanks to the sellers who take advantage of today's free listing event, buyers will be able to bid on millions of new, interesting items."

eBay Launches New Site Featuring Premium Fine Antiques, Art and Rare Collectibles

NEW YORK, October 19, 1999—eBay® (NASDAQ: EBAY; www.ebay.com) the world's leading person-to-person online trading community, today officially unveils a new site called eBay Great Collections at an event in New York City. Available at www.ebaygreatcollections.com and from the eBay homepage, eBay Great Collections features fine antiques, art and rare collectibles offered and guaranteed by many of the world's great auction houses, galleries and dealers.

"eBay Great Collections has partnered with some of the finest galleries, dealers and auction houses in the world to offer a vast selection of historical and premium collectibles," said Steve Westly, vice president of eBay and general manager of eBay Great Collections. "We are excited to launch this new site and bring our online community rare and remarkable items from all over the world - from Albert Pinkham Ryder's oil on canvas 'Pastoral' to Lou Gehrig's game-used home jersey to a rare ancient Celtic gold coin."

eBay Great Collections is a result of the company's work with recently acquired subsidiary Butterfield & Butterfield. By listening to and tapping into the knowledge of the experts - auction houses, galleries and dealers - eBay's goal is to offer the Internet's best destination for fine art, collectibles and antiques.

At eBay Great Collections, auction houses, galleries and dealers will have their own branded areas - bringing their trusted reputations online and giving these companies the opportunity to grow their businesses. On the web site they will be able to present their merchandise to eBay's existing community of over 5.6 million active members and allow their current customers to visit their favorite auction house or gallery more often - this time online at the eBay Great Collections web site.

The items showcased on eBay Great Collections will come from auction houses, galleries and dealers from around the world. The initial group of participating auction house partners include:

  • Alibris; Emeryville, California
  • Bloomsbury Book Auctions; London, England
  • Butterfield & Butterfield; San Francisco, California
  • Dargate Auction Galleries; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

More than 60 items available on eBay Great Collections will be on display at the New York event. Included among these items are "In His Own Write" by John Lennon (book signed by all four Beatles), presented by Alibris; Joe DiMaggio's #56 baseball bat, signed, presented by R&R Enterprises, Ralph Perullo; treasures from the wreck of the Spanish Treasure Fleet of 1715, Atocha, presented by Butterfield & Butterfield; and Gustav Klimt's crayon on paper of a standing female figure in profile.

eBay Great Collections makes these treasured items more accessible than ever before, eliminating the "buyers premium" charged by many companies in the fine art market.

With eBay Great Collections users will have access to items previously reserved for the auction floor. To sell items on eBay Great Collections registered eBay sellers are encouraged to apply to become an eBay Great Collections dealer or to list their items on consignment with participating auction houses or dealers.

Auction houses and dealers participating in eBay Great Collections will offer authentication services with the same guarantees they provide in the offline world, provide customer support to interested bidders via email and manage their own auctions. The eBay Great Collections auctions will be in the same format as those found of the eBay site and will include access to escrow, insurance and shipping services.

eBay Goes Live in Australia

World's Largest Online Trading Community Launches New Australian Web Site

SAN JOSE, Calif., October 20, 1999—eBay®, the world's largest person-to-person online trading community has launched its new Australian web site (www.ebay.com.au). The new site offers Australian buyers and sellers the opportunity to trade popular Australian items, such as Olympic and AFL memorabilia, Australian stamps and coins, and other unique items in more than 2,000 categories. Also, an easy-to-use search mechanism allows people to quickly find items located in Australia or from among the 3 million items listed on eBay around the world.

eBay pioneered online person-to-person trading, creating a huge marketplace and community where people can buy, sell, chat and share their experiences with fellow collectors all over the world. Already thousands of Australians are avid eBay users—some make their living from selling on eBay while others have discovered a fun and entertaining web site that allows them to pursue their collecting passions.

"www.ebay.com.au offers an irresistible combination for Australian traders - compelling local categories and listings, as well as access to a worldwide community of 5.6 million active buyers and sellers," said Alison Deans, managing director of eBay Australia & New Zealand. "No other web site offers Australians such a vibrant local marketplace and worldwide reach."

To promote the launch of the web site, eBay Australia is waiving all listing fees for a limited period, providing sellers with an even greater reason to list their items on www.ebay.com.au.

"I've been trading sports cards and collectibles at eBay for over 18 months," says Paul Richardson, an avid local eBay user. "I am really excited about the opportunities that the local site will open for me to buy and sell more local things, like Aussie Rules trading cards and memorabilia. Also, I like the idea of trading in Aussie dollars, rather than foreign currencies."

The new eBay Australia (www.ebay.com.au) web site now offers:

  • Country-specific categories and content, reflecting popular Australian collectibles such as AFL, cricket and rugby memorabilia; Australian coins and stamps; and Olympic pins;
  • The ability to trade in Australian dollars and search for items located in Australia;
  • Unparalleled access to a worldwide community of traders, with over 300,000 new items listed every day and over 3 million items for sale at any one time. Australian sellers can list their item so it can be viewed from any eBay site and buyers can view items listed anywhere in the world;
  • Local chat boards that allow eBay's Australian community to get the most out of the web site including the eBay Australia Café.

eBay Australia & New Zealand is a joint venture between ecorp Ltd and eBay.

BMW and eBAY Team Up for Charity Auction of the First Customer-Delivered X5

All Sale Proceeds to Benefit The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation

WOODCLIFF LAKE, New Jersey, October 28, 1999— BMW and eBay® plan to give philanthropically minded consumers the opportunity to make a donation and to purchase one new X5 Sports Activity Vehicle before it is available to the general public.

BMW of North America, Inc., and eBay, Inc., the world's leading person-to-person online trading community, have teamed up to offer the first customer-delivered X5 Sports Activity Vehicle through an online auction at www.ebay.com Oct. 29 – Nov. 7. The vehicle will be delivered through an authorized BMW SAV Center and all proceeds from the auction will benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

The auction is BMW's final event of the year to support the Komen Foundation. During the last three years, BMW has donated more than $3 million to Komen through its grass-roots programs. The Ultimate Drive invites BMW customers and the general public to test specially badged BMWs. For every mile that is "test driven" during these events, BMW donates $1 to the Komen Foundation.

The first customer-delivered X5 will have a Titanium Silver Metallic exterior and come equipped with Sport and Activity packages, the brand's state-of-the-art navigation system and a moonroof. The suggested retail price of the vehicle as equipped is $57,105 (including delivery and handling). While it is a completely new type of BMW, the X5 is characterized by the well-known features typical of the BMW experience, such as its Head Protection System, Dynamic Stability Control and exceptional handling.

However, this is the first truck from BMW, and the vehicle's dimensions, flexibility and all-wheel-drive capability clearly separate the X5 from anything the German manufacturer has ever brought to market. The X5 represents a technological evolution for the BMW marque and - with its agility, responsiveness and state-of-the art safety systems - creates an entirely unique driving experience in the segment. The 2000 BMW X5 4.4i will have a manufacturer's suggested retail price, including shipping and handling, of $49,970.

As an added bonus, BMW will fly the winning bidder to its new, state-of-the-art Performance Center in Spartanburg, S.C. There, a BMW specialist will provide a thorough introduction to the X5; a tour of the nearby manufacturing facility, where the X5 will be built exclusively; and time to explore the BMW Zentrum, a museum dedicated to more than 75 years of BMW's history.

The thrill continues when BMW professional drivers also give the winning bidder specialized driving instruction on the Performance Center's 1.7-mile paved driving skills course. Configured into one of 35 variations, the driving skills course simulates everyday driving conditions. There is also a 300-foot diameter smooth concrete skid pad that can be made as slick as black ice to allow the winning bidder to test the limits of the X5's adhesion and handling systems, including ABS brakes, All Season Traction and Dynamic Stability Control.

The winning bidder will also get special instruction on BMW's "other roads" course which simulates poor unpaved road conditions, including bridge crossings, steep hills and water crossings. The winning bidder will be challenged to use mental and physical reflexes to maneuver this perfectly balanced vehicle on a "teeter-totter" balance bridge.

BMW will arrange for delivery of the X5 through an authorized Sports Activity Vehicle retailer to the winning bidder after the trip to the Performance Center.

"With its legendary BMW performance, styling, luxury and technology, the X5 is a joy to drive on any road for any reason," said Tom Purves, Chairman and CEO of the BMW (US) Holding Corp. "We're thrilled to be auctioning the first customer-delivered X5 online and donating the proceeds to the Komen Foundation."

"We're excited to work with BMW of North America to make the first customer-delivered X5 available to the eBay community while uniting people to get involved in charitable giving," said Simon Rothman, vice president and general manager of eBay Automotive.

"The eBay community is made up of people who are passionate about something — whether it's sports memorabilia, toys or cars," said Dean Kruse, chief executive officer of Kruse International. "We're excited that people all over the world who love cars as much as we do can take part in the Auburn Auction by logging onto eBay."

More information about the Auburn Fall Car Collector Auction can be found on the Internet at www.kruseinternational.com or by contacting Kruse International directly at 800-968-4444.

eBay acquired Kruse International in May 1999 and has plans to launch a new automotive category in the fall of 1999. Due to the organic growth of car sales and the demand by the eBay community to buy and sell cars on the site, sellers are now listing vehicles on eBay at a current rate of approximately 1500 per week or 18,000 per quarter. This represents growth of 40 percent per month since the fourth quarter 1998.

Bids Help Kids Charity Auctions Debut at the Hollywood Film Festival

— Jack Lemmon To Receive 1999 Hollywood Lifetime Achievement Award and Auction His Handprints on eBay —

Los Angeles, Calf. August 9, 1999 — eBay® (NASDAQ: EBAY; www.ebay.com), the world's leading person-to-person online trading community, and the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF) have combined efforts to benefit children in Los Angeles and around the world. Thanks to Bids Help Kids™, a program launching today, auction proceeds from one-of-a-kind celebrity-donated items like movie memorabilia, autographed scripts, sports collectibles and other Hollywood treasures will be donated to children in need through EIF's children's charities, the American Red Cross and eBay.

Bids Help Kids will kick off today as part of the Hollywood Film Festival's gala celebration honoring Jack Lemmon at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. Lemmon, who will receive the Hollywood Lifetime Achievement Award at the event, once again made an imprint of his hands as he did in 1963 at Hollywood's Chinese Theatre. This time, his handprints and signature will be auctioned off on eBay as part of the Bids Help Kids campaign, making it possible for fans of the Oscar-winning actor to own a piece of Hollywood history while raising money for charity. Other 1999 Hollywood Film Festival Honorees include, among others: actor James Caan; director John Schlesinger; and the Mayor of Hollywood, Johnny Grant, who will be recognized for his community service.

For the next seven weeks through Sept. 26, Bids Help Kids charity auctions can be found on eBay at www.ebay.com/bidshelpkids. Just some of the more than 100 celebrity items to be auctioned for Bids Help Kids include: a two-hour behind-the-scenes tour of "The Young and The Restless;" diamond-studded Ray-Bans® worn by Sigourney Weaver to the 1998 Academy Awards®; a "Titanic" script signed by Leonardo DiCaprio; a suit worn by Annette Bening in "American President;" six signed ties worn by Jay Leno on "The Tonight Show;" a tennis racket signed by Andre Agassi; a pair of Gucci heels signed by Cindy Crawford; and Tom Jones autographed Tony Lama® boots.

"The Entertainment Industry Foundation is thrilled with this first partnership with eBay to help assist kids in crisis throughout the world," stated EIF President Lisa Paulsen. "With the help of over 100 entertainment stars, we hope to make this a very special and glamorous auction to support humanitarian efforts."

Carlos de Abreu, president and founder of the Hollywood Film Festival added, "EIF reflects the great charitable heart of Hollywood, and the Hollywood Film Festival is proud to be part of the organization's tradition of addressing humanitarian needs. Beginning this year we will start a new tradition for the Hollywood Film Festival by auctioning off items from our annual honorees for charity."

"eBay and EIF have united with the entertainment community through Bids Help Kids to help make a difference in the lives of children in need," said Reed Maltzman, director of eBay's regional business. "We're proud to be a part of this special night honoring Jack Lemmon, and couldn't think of a better place to launch our first regional service, eBay LA, than in the entertainment capital of the world at the Hollywood Film Festival."

Introduced in April 1999, eBay LA (www.ebay.com/la) makes it easy for local buyers and sellers to auction items that are too bulky, costly or delicate to ship. From surfboards, boats and cars to movie memorabilia, furniture and exercise equipment, Southern Californians can search and browse for items by geographic location and even arrange to "test drive" an item before purchasing. After winning an auction, eBay LA gives the community members the option of picking up the item, based on mutual buyer/seller agreement, to avoid shipping charges.

Since April, items sold on eBay by sellers from the Los Angeles area have increased from 4.6 percent to 5.8 percent as a percentage of total items listed. The average selling price of items sold in Los Angeles has increased 22 percent since the launch date.

Forty Years of Barbie® Doll History! Now That's Something to Chat About

eBay Introduces New Barbie™ Bulletin Board

SAN JOSE, Calf. August 10, 1999 — eBay® (NASDAQ: EBAY; www.ebay.com), the world's leading person-to-person online trading community, introduced a new Barbie™ Bulletin Board authorized by Mattel, Inc. Just in time for the 40th anniversary of Barbie, the bulletin board provides a place for Barbie® doll enthusiasts to come together and chat. The Barbie™ Bulletin Board is accessible from eBay's Doll category index page or at http://cgi1.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewBoard&name=barbie.

"Collectors from around the world come to eBay to find all types of Barbie® memorabilia, from vintage Ken® dolls to the Millennium Princess™ Barbie. In fact, more than 12,000 Barbie® auctions are happening right now on eBay," said Jill Finlayson, marketing manager for the Dolls, Toys and Bean Bag Plush categories on eBay. "We introduced the Barbie™ Bulletin Board for Barbie® collectors to make pursuing their passion even easier and more fun."

A strong community of doll enthusiasts has flourished on eBay. The new Barbie™ Bulletin Board enables Barbie fans to have their own area for focused discussions on Barbie®. With a knowledgeable community of collectors, those just beginning their collections can now more easily find someone who can answer their questions about both vintage and contemporary Barbie® dolls. The bulletin board also provides Barbie® enthusiasts their own place to share stories about their latest finds, the value of their dolls and their favorite Barbie® collecting experiences.

As a major sponsor, eBay was present at the 1999 National Barbie™ Convention, that took place August 4 - 7, 1999 in Pittsburgh, Penn. Hosted by the Western Pennsylvania Doll Club, the convention attracted approximately 900 attendees (CONFIRM ATTENDANCE).

"We were excited to have eBay at the National Barbie™ Convention, as eBay has proven to be an extraordinary resource for Barbieâ collectors," said Nancy Parsons, chairperson of the National Barbie™ Convention. "eBay is an ideal place for the Barbie® collecting community to come together to not only trade, but meet others with similar interests, chat and see what's new in the world of Barbie®."

eBay user Janice Kadan of Woodbourne, New York has been collecting vintage Barbie® dolls for several years. After a few years of extensively searching garage sales and flea markets for some items missing from her collection, she came across eBay and was able to find exactly what she was searching for.

"My life became so much easier and my Barbie® collection so much larger since I began using eBay," said Janice. "eBay opened up a new world for me. What took me three years to collect, I could have found in one day on eBay. My transactions on eBay have been so successful that I now trade on the site full-time, and I recently bought a new house and car with the help of the profits I made on eBay."

eBay Drives Into Automotive Category

New General and Collector Automotive Areas Brought Online with Kruse International

SAN JOSE, Calif. August 20, 1999 — eBay® (NASDAQ: EBAY; www.ebay.com), the world's leading person-to-person online trading community, today announced the launch of a new Automotive category, in conjunction with subsidiary Kruse International, one of the world's most respected organizations in the collector automobile market. The new automotive area features sub-categories for cars, parts, RVs, trucks, motorcycles and introduces "The Showroom," an area dedicated to the collector car enthusiast.

The new automotive area debuts as eBay and Kruse host the 29th annual Auburn Fall Collector Car Auction, which takes place September 1 - 7, 1999 at the Kruse Auction Park in Auburn, Ind. The world's first and largest collector car show and auction, the event will feature more than 5,000 collector cars and motorcycles.

"Cars are bought and sold everyday on eBay and now we have a dedicated area for people who are passionate about collecting cars or are looking for an efficient way to buy or sell a vehicle," said Brian Swette, senior vice president of marketing at eBay. "Whether you're interested in a 1969 Jaguar XKE Roadster or a 1995 Ford Explorer, eBay is now the best place to go online."

eBay's automotive section provides information on how to buy and sell a car online and is designed to be quick, convenient and hassle-free.

The "eBay Showroom" provides an interactive experience for avid collectors who like to spend time browsing and admiring collectible vehicles and rare accessories. The showroom provides online tips on buying and selling collector cars. Special car chats enable users to get advice from experts at Kruse, and bulletin boards help car collectors meet and swap car stories with others. A feedback feature allows users to voice their opinions of the site, and information about upcoming events is available on the automotive calendar.

eBay's automotive area also offers the Gallery, a feature that enables users to browse items up for auction in a series of pictures rather than text; Personal Shopper, which provides customized searches of items up for auction and notifies users via email when items of interest become available; and Featured Auctions, which highlight specific auctions in each category.

Due to the demand by the eBay community to buy and sell automobiles on the site, sellers are now listing vehicles on eBay at a current rate of approximately 1,500 per week or 18,000 per quarter. This represents growth of 40 percent per month since the fourth quarter 1998.

Currently, there are more than 25,000 listings on eBay's automotive area, including:

  • President Lyndon Baines Johnson's personal 1964 Lincoln Continental Convertible, in immaculate condition with less than 2,000 miles on the clock

Collectors Universe Expand Services for eBay to Include Autographed Memorabilia Certification

SAN JOSE, CALIF. July 14, 1999 — eBay® (NASDAQ: EBAY; www.ebay.com), the world's leading person-to-person online trading community, today announced the expansion of its relationship with Collectors Universe, the leading third-party autograph certification company, to include expert certification for autographed memorabilia, and continue eBay's commitment to providing its users with services and tools to ensure safe online person-to-person trading.

In April 1999, eBay announced its relationship with Collectors Universe with the introduction of expert authentication and grading for trading cards and coins through Collectors Universe subsidiaries, Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) and Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). After the positive response by the eBay community to authentication by PSA and PCGS, the addition of PSA/DNA to the lineup further emphasizes eBay's commitment to the secure trading of collectibles.

"eBay is committed to providing its community the services and tools to ensure the safest online person-to-person trading," said Steve Westly, vice president of marketing and business development for eBay. "We recognize Collectors Universe as respected leaders in their field and we're proud to continue our relationship and expand their offerings to our community."

Certification submission forms are accessible from the co-branded eBay and PSA/DNA site beginning July 12 at http://www.PSADNA.com/eBay. Information on the certification services for autographed memorabilia will also be available at http://pages.ebay.com/help/community/auth-autographs.html and from individual category homepages.

"Collectors Universe is proud to be a part of this new initiative to help buyers and sellers achieve peace of mind in sight-unseen trading of vintage sports collectibles," said Louis M. Crain, president and CEO of Collectors Universe. "Assurance as to the authenticity of an item will not only help to promote the sale and the value of memorabilia, it will also increase the enjoyment that comes with owning a piece of sports history."

eBay sellers will receive a 10 percent rebate from PSA/DNA through August 31. When autographed items are submitted to PSA/DNA, they are examined by at least three of the world's leading autograph experts. After they have been certified by PSA/DNA, collectors can be confident that the industry's top experts are convinced their autographs are authentic. PSA/DNA tags each item using state-of-the-art technology to protect autographed collectibles. Besides the tamper-evident label, serial number, and Certificate of Authenticity, PSA/DNA's multi-level security system uses a proprietary synthetic DNA that is permanent, invisible, non-damaging and non-transferable.

The process for sellers starts by sending an item or items to PSA/DNA for certification. The fee for each item will vary depending on value of item submitted. Once certified, the certification information is immediately accessible by visiting the PSA/DNA website at www.CollectorsUniverse.com or by calling PSA/DNA directly. eBay Vehicles Cruise the Country to Bring The Exciting World of e-Commerce To Life

SAN JOSE, Calf. July 28, 1999 — eBay® (NASDAQ: EBAY; www.ebay.com), the world’s leading person-to-person online trading community, announced a nationwide, interactive tour hitting the road this summer called "From Our Home Page to Your Hometown." Visiting more than 30 communities across America, the tour is providing people with the opportunity to get up close and personal with the Internet’s popular person-to-person trading site.

"We’re hitting the highway this summer to reach out to our community and bring eBay into local communities to show people how easy and fun it is to buy and sell online," said Brian Swette, senior vice president of marketing and international at eBay. "Millions of people use eBay to trade almost anything you can imagine, but there are still many people who have not experienced online trading first-hand."

eBay guides are crisscrossing the country in two Fleetwood RVs, visiting local community events to demonstrate the ease and power of bidding, buying and selling online. The on-site eBay guides introduce first-timers to the auction process and demonstrate how to buy and sell effectively online. They also provide helpful tips on how to tailor searches for maximum results, including how to use special eBay features, such as Personal Shopper, My eBay and About Me.

The eBay RVs, which roll in at more than 30 feet in length, bring the eBay community spirit to life with its dramatic visual displays, including larger-than-life pictures of items traded from some of the most popular categories on eBay, including a giant green Tyrannosaurus Rex and vintage lava lamps. The 20-by-30-foot eBay blimp soars overhead at events identifying the eBay Tour location. Both eBay RV’s are fully equipped to provide direct access to eBay.

"This is a great opportunity to meet and speak directly with our users who are already trading on eBay and the many others who may want to be part of this growing community," said Forrest Marsh, eBay Tour coordinator. "We hear regularly from users how the Internet has helped change their lives, and we want to make that a reality for even more people."

The eBay "From Our Home Page to Your Hometown" tour will visit local community events in more than 30 cities coast-to-coast, including:

—  NASCAR, Indianapolis, Ind., August 5 - 7

eBay And SkyTel To Offer Wireless Online Trading

SkyTel Network Will Enable eBay Users to Monitor and Participate in Auctions While Away from their Computers

SAN JOSE, Calf. and JACKSON, Miss. - May 13, 1999 - eBay® (NASDAQ: EBAY; www.ebay.com), the world's leading person-to-person online trading community, and SkyTel Corp., a wholly-owned subsidiary of SkyTel Communications Inc. (NASDAQ: SKYT; www.skytel.com) are joining forces to create a wireless person-to-person online trading service that will allow eBay users to receive auction updates and participate in auctions via wireless devices, including pagers, cell phones and personal digital assistants (PDAs).

The trading solution will offer the eBay community a suite of services. Wireless devices will notify buyers when they have been outbid in an auction and when they have won an auction on eBay. Sellers will be alerted when their items have sold. Users will also receive eBay broadcast messages with updates regarding general eBay community-wide news, new service offerings and service enhancements. "Our users often tell us that they would like to follow eBay away from the home or the office," said Steve Westly, vice president of marketing and business development at eBay. "SkyTel will make it possible for eBay users to get the very latest information on the items they are bidding on and selling when they are running errands, doing the shopping or driving the kids to school."

eBay and SkyTel will offer an eBay branded paging solution to users that currently do not own an alphanumeric paging device. This solution will be available on eBay's web site and will include a text pager and prepaid service, a personal toll-free number, nationwide coverage as needed and an email address.

Through SkyTel's Page Recall capability, eBay/SkyTel members will also be able to access their auction notifications via any telephone in the United States when they are out of the coverage area. Members can also use the pager as a personal messaging service, in addition to receiving eBay notifications.

SkyTel will also have the ability to send auction notifications to eBay users who already own wireless devices with Internet email addresses, including cell phones and PDAs.

"SkyTel is proud to participate in the e-commerce arena as eBay's official person-to-person wireless trading solution," said John T. Stupka, SkyTel president and CEO. "Prior to this service, many eBay users interested in items up for auction on the site may have been hesitant to leave their computers. SkyTel will provide the link that gives eBay users the freedom to go to work, to the store, to a special function or just about anywhere, without missing out on a coveted item."

The auction alert service, which will be launched by July 1999, is the first offering in a full suite of wireless trading solutions that SkyTel and eBay will roll out. Later in the year, SkyTel and eBay plan to offer an interactive service to allow eBay members to increase auction bid amounts directly from their wireless devices.

The Force Is With You On Ebay

Users Flock to eBay for Star Wars Collectibles

SAN JOSE, Calif., May 11, 1999 - With the release of "Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace" just one week away, fans from around the globe are coming to eBay® (NASDAQ: EBAY; www.ebay.com), the world's leading person-to-person online trading community, to find a tremendous selection of Stars Wars® items. Currently, eBay is hosting auctions of more than 21,400 Star Wars collectibles from the original "Star Wars" trilogy and the upcoming movie.

eBay has long been a hub for Star Wars fans to find a wide variety of Star Wars memorabilia, such as classic porcelain figures of Princess Leia and Darth Vader PEZ dispensers, and items from the "Phantom Menace," such as posters of Anakin Skywalker and Queen Amidala figures.

From January to March 1999, more than 129,255 auctions involving Star Wars memorabilia took place on eBay. With the upcoming release of the new movie, the availability of Star Wars merchandise on eBay is exploding.

Deanna Bock, of Kirkland, Wash., began collecting Star Wars merchandise as a child when the movies first came out twenty years ago. She and her father, Lauren, have scoured garage sales, stores and toy shows, and even posted advertisements to build upon their collection. Now, their collection is one of the largest in the Pacific Northwest. Lauren has accumulated more than 1,000 Star Wars figures and Deanna designs custom outfits for the vintage 12-inch figures. In addition, a five-by-six foot Millennium Falcon hangs from their living room ceiling surrounded by X-Wing Fighters. Both are active eBay users.

"Whenever Deanna and I have trouble hunting down a unique Star Wars collectible, we know that it will be up for auction on eBay," said Lauren Bock. "Recently, I was trying to track down two Star Wars towels, one featuring Bobba Fett and the other, Stormtroopers. I could not find them anywhere, so I checked out eBay. I ended up finding and buying them both on eBay."

"eBay has made a significant impact on my Star Wars collecting. It's the place I can go to when I want to find highly sought after or hard to find Star Wars memorabilia," said Deanna Bock. "My father and I have converted one of our bedrooms into an 'Episode I' room, full of 'Phantom Menace' collectibles. Right now we're building up our collection of the 12-inch figures. Darth Maul and the other figures that we have difficulty obtaining, I'm confident we'll find on eBay."

Talk show host Rosie O'Donnell announced on the May 5th episode of "The Rosie O'Donnell Show" that she will auction off Star Wars memorabilia from her own collection on eBay. Director George Lucas signed a few of Rosie's Star Wars collectibles that will be included in the auctions. All proceeds from Rosie's auctions will benefit the For All Kids Foundation.

eBay is an official premier sponsor for the Worldwide Trilogy Celebration in Dallas, TX. This is a Star Wars theme convention held on May 21 to 23 in conjunction with the nationwide movie release of Episode I.

eBay Announces Salt Lake City As Location For New Customer Support Center

Meg Whitman, eBay President and CEO, and Utah Governor, Mike Leavitt, Unveil Plans

SAN JOSE, Calif., May 6, 1999 - eBay® (NASDAQ: EBAY; www.ebay.com), the world's leading person-to-person online trading community, today announced Salt Lake City as the location for its first remote customer support center. eBay president and CEO, Meg Whitman, and Utah Governor, Mike Leavitt, unveiled details of the new operation at a press conference held today at the Utah State Capitol building.

"Customer support is the cornerstone of eBay's success in online person-to-person trading," said Whitman. "We're expanding our support staff in order to stay ahead of the needs of our thriving online community. In just the first three months of this year, the eBay user base has almost doubled - from 2.1 million members to 3.8 million. With the establishment of a support center in Salt Lake City, we look forward to continuing our high quality service to our users."

eBay selected Salt Lake City for several reasons, including the existence of a well-educated, tech-savvy work force. In addition the location offers easy access to eBay's San Jose, CA headquarters.

eBay will begin recruiting in the Salt Lake City area, partnering with state and local government agencies, to hire potentially hundreds of employees by December 1999. Their main responsibility will be interacting via email with the eBay community, responding to inquiries and requests that users may experience when they visit the eBay site. Aggressive recruitment will begin immediately and continue into the year 2000.

"As an eBay user myself, I'm proud that Salt Lake City was selected as the site for their new customer support center," said Utah Governor, Mike Leavitt. eBay And Krause Publications Partner To Introduce The Official Ebay Magazine

New Lifestyle Publication Celebrates the Enthusiasts in All of Us

SAN JOSE, Calif. May 3, 1999 - eBay™ (NASDAQ: EBAY; www.ebay.com), the world's leading person-to-person online trading community, and Krause Publications (www.krause.com), one of the world's largest publishers, have announced a new marketing initiative to launch an eBay magazine. The monthly lifestyle publication will be geared to the millions of Internet-savvy collecting consumers who are using their considerable purchasing power to buy items on the Internet and have made going online part of their daily lives. The premier issue will hit newsstands and specialty retailers nationwide in mid August 1999.

"The eBay community is made up of a diverse group of users ranging from casual collectors and enthusiasts to people who make their living by trading items full time on the site," said Steve Westly, vice president of marketing and business development. "We're proud to partner with Krause to introduce the magazine with these people in mind. The eBay magazine will be an entertaining and valuable resource for anyone interested in learning more about the cultural phenomenon of collecting via the Internet or even making a living on it. " According to Media Metrix February Web Report, eBay is the third most popular site on the Internet when measured by total user minutes per month (800 million) and first among all e-commerce companies.

"The eBay magazine will be the print portal for the growing number of people who are flocking to e-commerce sites," said Jim Gleim, executive publisher of Krause Publications. "eBay's online consumers are a marketer's dream audience, spending more time and dollars in transactions than any other group on the Web, and from the data, their online spending extends well beyond the confines of the eBay site - so will the content of this magazine."

In the fourth quarter of 1998 alone, eBay users generated more than $306 million in gross merchandise volume (the value of goods sold between individuals). eBay offers the broadest selection of items for sale anywhere on the Internet - and quite possibly in the world - with more than 1.8 million items up for auction each day in more than 1,500 categories. In fact, on average, during the fourth quarter of 1998, every minute of every day more than 150 new items were listed, more than 500 bids were placed and seven new people registered on eBay.

Among the many topical issues the new magazine will address are: essential tips for navigating the Internet trading/commerce experience; practical advice for finding that special or elusive item; feature stories on celebrity collectors, online and offline trading, and the latest enabling technologies; and assistance with valuation and authentication of items.

eBay Inc. Announces First Quarter 1999 Financial Results

Achieved Record First Quarter Net Revenues of $34.0 million

San Jose, CA, April 26, 1999 - eBay Inc. (NASDAQ: EBAY; www.ebay.com), the world's largest person-to-person online trading community, today reported financial results for its first quarter ended March 31, 1999.

The Company generated net revenues of $34.0 million in the first quarter of 1999, a 469 percent increase over the $6.0 million reported for the same period last fiscal year. Gross profit margin decreased to 85 percent for the quarter from 89 percent a year ago. Net income for the current quarter was $5.9 million, or $0.05 per share on a fully diluted basis. eBay's net income before the effect of non-cash charges related to stock based compensation and acquisition expenses was $7.0 million, or $0.05 per fully diluted share, compared with $569,000 or $0.01 per fully diluted share during the first quarter of fiscal 1998.

The primary contributor to the increase in revenues for the quarter was the increased activity on the site. Gross merchandise volume (the value of goods traded) for the current quarter were $541 million, up 76 percent from the $307 million reported in the fourth quarter of 1998. The number of registered users increased more than 1.6 million to over 3.8 million at March 31, 1999, an increase of about 75 percent from the more than 2.1 million registered users at December 31, 1998. In addition, eBay hosted over 22.9 million auctions during the first quarter of 1999, up from 13.6 million in the fourth quarter of last year.

The Company remains committed to providing a safe, easy-to-use trading environment on the eBay site. As a result, the Company made significant personnel investments during the first quarter which affected costs in all income statement categories. Cost of sales increased during the first quarter largely due to labor and related costs associated with the Company's expansion of its customer service department and depreciation of recently acquired site equipment. In addition, the Company realized additional costs in volume-driven transactional expenses such as ISP connectivity charges and bank processing charges for customer fees paid by credit cards. The increase in sales and marketing expenses in the first quarter over the prior period was primarily due to personnel growth, the expansion of online advertising, tradeshow programs and international marketing. Product development expenses increased due to additional headcount and the use of consultants, but were otherwise relatively unchanged compared to the fourth quarter of 1998. General and administrative expenses increased substantially over the previous quarter again primarily due to the Company's investment in personnel, increases in professional service fees and incremental costs associated with being a public company.

For the first quarter, eBay recorded certain non-cash charges of $666,000 and $453,000 related to the amortization of stock compensation and acquisition-related expenses, respectively. The Company recorded a tax provision of $4.3 million, representing an effective tax rate of 42 percent of first quarter pretax income.

"We are excited to start 1999 with strong first quarter results and positive growth across all metrics. This past quarter, we continued our efforts to bring a wider audience to eBay through a variety of marketing endeavors including online and traditional advertising, grassroots marketing, public relations and strong word of mouth referrals. We also brought eBay to the international market with the launches of the U.K. and Canadian sites," stated Meg Whitman, President and CEO of eBay. "In addition, we expanded the end-to-end trading solutions to include packaging, shipping, photo hosting and authentication services for our users. As we grow, we continue to focus on our mission to provide our users the tools to help them trade practically anything on earth."

The Company's overall balance sheet is largely unchanged from the fourth quarter of 1998. The Company added $8.4 million in net fixed assets consisting mostly of computer hardware and software and advanced an $18.8 million payment for future marketing efforts as part of the strategic alliance with AOL. The Company's balance sheet was strengthened with the completion of its secondary stock offering completed in April 1999.

eBay Agrees To Buy Butterfield & Butterfield

SAN JOSE, Calif., April 26,1999 - eBay® (NASDAQ: EBAY; www.ebay.com) today announced that it has agreed to acquire Butterfield & Butterfield, one of the world's largest and most prestigious auction houses. This important strategic acquisition enables eBay to accelerate its penetration into higher priced items on a global basis.

"This transaction will combine eBay's technology and large community of users- with Butterfield's expertise in premium markets and extensive relationships with dealers, auction houses and individuals throughout North America, Europe and Asia," said Meg Whitman, president and chief executive officer of eBay. "We will be able to bring fine and decorative art and collectibles online allowing eBay members unprecedented access to many of the world's outstanding collections."

eBay users also will benefit from the services and expertise offered by Butterfield & Butterfield's team of over 50 specialists who are able to authenticate, appraise and market a wide range of art and fine collectibles including paintings, furniture and jewelry.

"Butterfield & Butterfield is not only one of the oldest and most respected auction houses in the world, but our large staff of specialists provide expertise in a wide range of categories from 17th century European armor to fine paintings," said John Gallo, president of the San Francisco based company. "We believe this will enable a whole new generation of users to safely trade unique, high-end items on eBay."

Gallo added that Butterfield & Butterfield has worked with the major Internet companies and he believes eBay has the most professional management team in the business. "eBay understands the importance of the relationship to the customer which is the underpinning of this industry," he said.

eBay's Whitman added that Butterfield & Butterfield is a perfect match for the person-to-person online trading community. "This is a profitable company with a solid business plan and a first-rate management team. Butterfield & Butterfield also has strong relationships with major auction houses around the world."

Steve Westly, eBay's vice president of marketing and business development said that eBay is excited about Butterfield & Butterfield because it is moving more quickly than any other traditional auction company to embrace the Internet. Butterfield & Butterfield began providing auctions over the Internet through its relationship with a local company and ended the arrangement three weeks ago in order to work with eBay.

eBay will continue its emphasis on the person-to-person online trading space and will utilize its purchase of Butterfield & Butterfield to enter the field of mid-tier auctions.

The transaction will be accounted for as a tax-free pooling of interests. The number of shares to be issued in the transaction will be determined by a formula involving the average price of eBay common stock during a period prior to the closing of the transaction. The approximate value of the transaction is $260 million. The transaction is expected to be accretive in 1999 and eBay may recognize certain one-time expenses related to the transaction in the quarter of closing. Closing is subject to certain conditions, including regulatory approvals, and is expected to take place in the second quarter.

In a related development, Butterfield & Butterfield announced it has determined to withdraw its proposed initial public offering.

eBay Enlists Goodby, Silverstein & Partners For Brand-Building Advertising Effortsd

Agency Selected for Creativity and Consumer Branding Expertise

SAN JOSE, Calif. April 23, 1999 - eBay® (NASDAQ: EBAY; www.ebay.com), the world's leading person-to-person online trading community, today announced the appointment of Goodby, Silverstein & Partners as its advertising agency of record. eBay selected the award-winning agency to further develop brand-building advertising campaigns and integrated communication initiatives.

"We're excited to embark upon a long-term relationship with Goodby, Silverstein & Partners," said Brian Swette, senior vice president of marketing at eBay. "GS&P has a proven track record of delivering creative work that is an honest and relevant reflection of a brand. We are confident they will help expand eBay's recognition as a trusted and famous brand."

With headquarters in the "eBay Area," Goodby's San Francisco office will allow the advertising team to work closely with eBay in San Jose throughout the creative process. "We couldn't have chosen a better partner than Acme to launch our inaugural advertising campaign. No one is better at launching a brand, from initial positioning through all launch communications and advertising," continued Swette. "Now, we've enlisted Goodby to help to grow the eBay brand and increase our reach and relevance to consumers."

In October 1998, eBay launched its first national print and broadcast advertising campaign to increase awareness and trial of the company's brand. The national radio campaign has aired on more than 12,000 stations across the country. The national print campaign executed in November 1998 included Parade, People, Entertainment Weekly, Newsweek and Sports Illustrated.

eBay Teams With Mail Boxes Etc. And iShip.com To Provide Person-To-Person E-Commerce Shipping Solutions

Alliance is first of its kind to provide seamless solution for shipping and delivery services; bridges Internet commerce world with real-world infrastructure

SAN JOSE AND SAN DIEGO, CALIF. AND SEATTLE, WASH. (April 8, 1999) - eBay (NASDAQ: EBAY; www.ebay.com), the leading person-to-person online trading community, today announced a five-year agreement with Mail Boxes Etc. (MBE), the world's largest franchisor of retail business, communications and postal service centers, and a planned agreement with iShip.com, the leader in multi-carrier Web-based shipping services for e-commerce, to provide eBay members with a first-of-its-kind, integrated system for e-commerce shipping.

The three companies -- eBay, MBE and iShip.com -- represent crucial components in the e-commerce industry, and will team together to provide integrated shipping solutions to effectively support the rapidly growing e-commerce industry. iShip.com will provide upfront information to e-merchants and buyers regarding shipping costs and options, helping reduce the need for frequent emails to work out terms of shipping. For eBay sellers with frequent shipping needs, MBE will provide the bricks-and-mortar support for packing and shipping. In addition, eBay and MBE are working to implement a "hold for inspection" program where MBE franchisees will provide a place for delivery and inspection of goods.

"The growth of eBay's person-to-person online trading has created a huge demand for improved shipping solutions for our community of 2.1 million users," said Meg Whitman, president and chief executive officer of eBay. "MBE, with its network of more than 3,000 centers across the country, and iShip.com, with its innovative online-shipping, pricing and tracking solutions, are the ideal partners for eBay to join with in developing a fully integrated shipping system to handle this demand."

The eBay/MBE/iShip.com shipping solution will make the shipping process easy, convenient and efficient for buyers and sellers. With accurate zip-to-zip rate and service information from iShip.com, eBay users will be able to see how much a shipment will cost, even before they place a bid. Web-based pricing streamlines the shipping process while instant package status informs sellers and buyers of the exact location of the goods. Plus, eBay members will benefit from the network of participating MBE centers nationwide, providing convenient drop-off and pick-up locations for e-commerce shipments.

Plans for eBay, MBE and iShip.com provide for iShip.com to develop a co-branded shipping interface page integrated into the eBay site. This page will give members easy access to shipping rates and service alternatives, accurate pricing information, shipping help features and package tracking status. Additionally, MBE and eBay will develop a shipping solutions page that will give tutorial information specific to MBE's services, standard packing requirements, and information on MBE's proprietary declared-value program. The site also will include an MBE locator, so buyers and sellers can find the most convenient center.

In addition, the companies are working to develop MBE's new "hold for inspection" program that the companies anticipate will enable buyers to accept or refuse delivery upon inspection of items shipped to participating MBE locations. This service is planned to provide users another tool to facilitate person-to-person online trading.

"As the volume of e-commerce increases, shipping solutions that bridge the Web and the physical world become critical," said Jim Amos, MBE president and CEO. "MBE will now bring our commitment to world-class customer service to the enormous volume of eBay transactions, ultimately making e-commerce business easier. And, with iShip.com's leading technology, we've tackled the challenges associated with shipping the amount of merchandise now sold online."

"Teaming with eBay and MBE, we're realizing our vision of integrating Web-based shipping services into e-commerce, to give buyers and merchants choice, convenience and efficiency," said Steve Teglovic, co-founder and CEO of iShip.com. "Our e-commerce shipping solution for eBay members means no more doubts about how to ship, where a package is, or what it will cost to send it to the winning buyer," he added.

In support of this new strategic partnership, MBE is investing $10 million to make new technology available to its network of more than 3,000 domestic franchises. This initiative links satellite technology with point-of-sale (POS) computer systems as part of MBE's ongoing drive to "make business easier" for both its franchisees and its growing customer base.

"This move is critical to the future growth of MBE, since it allows us to accommodate the changing needs of our customers, while at the same time attracting new Internet customers," said Amos. "Also, this technology puts MBE one step closer to providing a comprehensive shipping solution for the dynamic e-commerce community."

eBay And Collectors Universe Partner To Offer Authentication And Grading Services

eBay Continues to Expand Safety Measures for Online Trading

SAN JOSE, Calif. April 6, 1999 - eBayTM (NASDAQ: EBAY; www.ebay.com), the world's leading person-to-person online trading community, today announced the addition of expert authentication and grading options in popular product categories, including trading cards and rare coins. eBay has partnered with Collectors Universe, the premier authentication and grading service company, to continue its commitment to providing user services and tools to ensure safe online person-to-person trading.

The first in a series of new authentication and quality verification services will appear on the eBay site on April 6, 1999 at approximately noon Pacific Standard Time. Current participating companies include two subsidiaries of Collectors Universe, Professional Sports Authenticators (PSA) and Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). Collectors Universe offers a financial guarantee that backs both the grade and authenticity of every trading card in a PSA holder and every coin in a PCGS holder. eBay will add autograph authentication starting in June when it launches a program with PSA/DNA, another Collectors Universe subsidiary, which utilizes a synthetic DNA marker to permanently authenticate "signed-in-the-presence" signatures, as well as a team of experts who authenticate vintage autographs.

"We are pleased to announce this relationship with Collectors Universe to provide the industry's most respected authentication and grading services for the eBay community," said Steve Westly, vice president of marketing and business development at eBay. "Backed by a 100% guarantee, this integrated service will be of great use to the growing number of collectors on eBay."

Authentication and grading services are accessible from co-branded eBay and Collectors Universe sites beginning April 6 at http://www.pcgs.com/ebay and http://www.psacard.com/ebay. Information on the authentication and grading services for coins and trading cards will also be available at http://pages.ebay.com/help/community/auth-coin.html and http://pages.ebay.com/help/community/auth-card.html and from individual category homepages, including sports memorabilia.

"eBay has had a significant impact on the world of collecting," said David Hall, founder of PCGS. "Thanks to the contributions eBay has made in person-to-person trading, it's important to provide these authentication services to help people who buy, sell and collect coins and trading cards using the Internet."

eBay sellers will receive a 10 percent discount from PCGS and PSA for the first 30 days. After 30 days, sellers will receive a 10 percent rebate to their eBay account on all services provided by PCGS and PSA. Authenticated and graded coins and trading cards are encapsulated in a tamper-evident holder and sonically sealed with a certificate of authenticity listing a description and grade of the card or coin.

"We're proud to be a part of this new initiative to help buyers and sellers achieve peace of mind in sight-unseen trading by verifying authenticity and grading," said Lou Crain, CEO of Collectors Universe. "We have a long history in sports and non-sports trading cards and rare coins, and are pleased to bring our expertise to the online eBay community."

The process for sellers starts by sending an item or items to PCGS and PSA for grading and authentication, which is done in a one- to 30-day turn around (fee will vary depending on time). Sellers can include a logo in the eBay item description that identifies that the item is authenticated and links to information about its specific grade and authenticity.

"eBay's new authentication capabilities open up a wonderful world of opportunity to truly explore and participate in the collectibles marketplace," said Laura Sperber, owner of Legend Numismatics, one of the largest rare coin companies in the country. The company frequently conducts business on eBay and recently sold a mint-state Morgan dollar for $36,000 on the site. "eBay has exceeded our expectations. I plan to use this service as much as possible."

eBay's movie memorabilia category currently contains more than 26,000 items up for auction, including props, wardrobe items, posters, photographs and lithographs, ranging from a "Planet of the Apes" gorilla suit to a replica of the ark in "Raiders of the Lost Ark."

He discovered eBay a year ago, and now visits the site daily to look for items to add to his growing collection. Some of Jorgensen's most prized finds on eBay include a life jacket, china setting and pieces of the actual set from last year's Academy Award-winner "Titanic." This year, he's hoping to find props from his personal pick for best picture, Academy Award nominee, "Shakespeare in Love."

"Collecting has become much easier and more fun since I started using eBay," said Jorgensen. "It's like going to a flea market except that I can immediately zero in on movie props, photos, posters and lobby cards that I would have never found without eBay.

America Online and eBay Announce Strategic Marketing Alliance

eBay Becomes the Preferred Person-to-Person Online Trading Community on AOL, AOL.COM, CompuServe, Netscape's Netcenter, ICQ and Digital City.

Co-Branded Sites To Be Created Incorporating eBay Features, Listings and Content and AOL Content and Community Features

Dulles, VA and San Jose, CA, March 25, 1999—America Online, Inc., the world's leading interactive services company, and eBay Inc., the largest online person-to-person trading community, today announced a four-year strategic alliance that will expand person-to-person commerce and community-building on AOL and its family of brands. This agreement expands the Companies' existing strategic relationship.

The agreement gives eBay prominent presence across the domestic and international AOL family of brands, including AOL, AOL.COM, CompuServe, Netscape's Netcenter, ICQ and Digital City, and eBay will pay AOL $75 million over the term of the agreement. In addition, AOL is entitled to all advertising revenues generated by the co-branded sites and may act as the exclusive third-party advertising sales force for advertising sold on eBay's website, www.ebay.com.

Under the agreement, America Online and eBay will create customized and co-branded sites for America Online's multiple brands. These sites will include comprehensive listings, feedback and ratings, message boards and select content from eBay. With nearly 50 million auctions completed since September 1995, eBay offers AOL members the most robust and easy-to-use person-to-person trading experience anywhere online or on the Internet.

AOL will promote eBay to its member community of over 16 million members. eBay will promote AOL as its preferred Internet online service, and as future enhancements, eBay will enable its users to download ICQ on its site www.ebay.com, as well as integrate AOL's "My News" feature into its "My eBay" feature.

As a part of the agreement, the companies will work together to facilitate eBay's expansion into international markets. AOL will also help launch eBay's expansion into regional markets through the promotion of eBay on Digital City.

Bob Pittman, President and Chief Operating Officer of America Online, Inc., said: "This agreement is great for AOL members and users of our family of brands because it further expands their already dynamic online community, giving them easier access to the largest person-to-person trading community in cyberspace. Not only does this make AOL even more valuable to their everyday lives, it makes AOL's many brands even more accessible to eBay's more than 2.1 million registered users, one of the most active communities anywhere in cyberspace."

"AOL is a leader in creating and managing online communities, and eBay is in a key position to reach a much broader network of Internet users through AOL. By providing AOL users with quicker and more convenient ways to conduct person-to-person trading on eBay, we are continuing to set the standard as the leading personal e-commerce destination," said Meg Whitman, President and Chief Executive Officer of eBay. "This alliance not only provides us significant customer acquisition opportunities, it serves as an important brand investment."

eBay brings to the alliance its powerful business model of person-to-person online trading, the largest marketplace of buyers and sellers online with more than 2.1 million registered users (as of December 31, 1998), and the third busiest site on the Internet in terms of total usage minutes, according to the Media Metrix February 1999 Web report.

"eBay will provide AOL users a customized 'eBay at AOL' experience, including content, special features and access to special promotional auctions," said Steve Westly, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development at eBay. "On eBay, users will be able to access certain AOL community tools, such as ICQ, a communications portal with 30 million registrants worldwide."

Founded in 1985, America Online, Inc., based in Dulles, Virginia, is the world's leader in interactive services, Web brands, Internet technologies, and e-commerce services. America Online, Inc. operates: two worldwide Internet services, America Online, with more than 16 million members, and CompuServe, with approximately 2 million members; several leading Internet brands including ICQ and Digital City, Inc.; the Netscape Netcenter and AOL.COM portals; and the Netscape Navigator and Communicator browsers. Through its strategic alliance with Sun Microsystems, the Company develops and offers easy-to-deploy, end-to-end e-commerce and enterprise solutions for companies operating in the Net Economy.

Tiny Toy Is Big Collectible
Founder of eBay to Host Reception at 1999 PEZ®-A-THON Convention

Los Angeles, Feb. 24, 1999 - Collectors of PEZ® candy dispensers are invited to attend the only international PEZ convention held west of the Rocky Mountains, taking place March 26-27, 1999 in Los Angeles. The 1999 PEZ®-A-THON convention will be kicked off by Pierre Omidyar, founder of eBayTM (www.ebay.com; NASDAQ: EBAY), the world's leading person-to-person online trading community.

"This year's convention will be better than ever," said 'Jolly' Jim Presnal, producer of the PEZ-A-THON convention. "We are pleased to have Mr. Omidyar at this year's show. PEZ collecting played a vital role in the inspiration of eBay."

Pierre Omidyar initially developed the eBay Web site in 1995 partly to help his wife, an avid collector of PEZ dispensers, find trading partners. Currently there are more than 1,700 PEZ-related auctions happening on eBay.

The value of older PEZ dispensers has increased steadily since the early 1990s. Some rare variations sell in excess of $5,500 - all for a dispenser that originally sold for 29¢. In fact, a rare 1950s PEZ Rocket Ray Gun sold on eBay for $5,555.55. Despite the high prices paid for some older dispensers, the hobby continues to attract new collectors. The reason why? PEZ Candy, Inc. still produces the candy and dispensers by the millions, and children of all ages can begin their own collections with the current dispensers for only 99¢ a piece.

eBay and Sparky'sTM, the largest single-store retailer of PEZ and PEZ-licensed products in the world, are the sponsors of the 1999 PEZ-A-THON. The event will be held at the Manhattan Beach Marriott Hotel, 1400 Parkview Avenue (off of Rosencrans, one mile west of 405) in Los Angeles. The event is open to the public.

eBay To Stop User Listings Of Firearms And Ammunition On The Site

SAN JOSE, Calif. Feb. 19, 1999

eBayTM (NASDAQ: EBAY; www.ebay.com), the world’s leading person-to-person online trading community, today announced that it is ending user listings of all firearms and ammunition on the site. The decision was based on the determination that the Internet is not an appropriate venue for this kind of merchandise. Effective March 5, 1999, firearms will not be listed in any categories, including the "Firearms," "Antique," "Collectibles," and "Sport" categories.

"While we acknowledge the gun collectors and sports enthusiasts among our users, eBay takes its role as a responsible member of the online community very seriously," said Steve Westly, vice president of marketing and business development at eBay. "After careful consideration of the issue, we believe the process of buying and selling firearms online is sufficiently different from the offline world, and it is appropriate for us to end the user listing of firearms on eBay."

To meet the March 5, 1999 deadline for eliminating the "Miscellaneous: Firearms" category from the site, users may list firearms in that category until Feb. 26, 1999. After that date, eBay will remove any firearms listed on the site.

Westly added that online sellers cannot readily guarantee that buyers meet all the qualifications and comply with the laws governing firearm sales. eBay had previously raised the possibility of instituting changes to the Firearms category. After having investigated a variety of methods to ensure public safety without eliminating the firearms category, eBay concluded that, in consideration of current technology and laws, no alternative met eBay’s standards.

"We realize that the sale of firearms is a controversial issue, and our stance will spark support as well as criticism," continued Westly. "We are also sensitive to the effect that this policy may have on serious gun collectors. After thorough evaluation, we have decided to end all user listings of firearms and ammunition on eBay in the interests of our site, our users and the offline community."

Firearms-related items, such as holsters, literature, clothing and scopes, may still be sold on eBay, but only listed in the "Collectibles: Western Americana," "Collectibles: Militaria" and "Miscellaneous: Sporting Goods: Hunting" categories.

As part of the ongoing dialogue with its community, eBay will host public forums on Monday, Feb. 22, 1999, from 2:00 to 4:00 PST and on Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1999, from noon to 2:00 PST on the "Discuss eBay’s Newest Features" board, to answer any questions from community members about the firearms policy.

eBay Pioneers A Unique Approach To Corporate Giving
Establishes Charitable Foundation Funded by Donation of 107,250 Shares of Pre-IPO Stock

SAN JOSE, Calif. Feb. 17, 1999

eBayTM (NASDAQ: EBAY; www.ebay.com), the world’s leading person-to-person online trading community, is reaching beyond the boundaries of its virtual village to assist communities in the United States and around the world. eBay established the eBay Foundation™ with funding from pre-IPO stock to provide grants to local and global nonprofit organizations.

"eBay is setting a significant example for corporate philanthropy," said Peter Hero, president of Community Foundation Silicon Valley, a public charity organization that facilitates corporate gift-giving. "Donating pre-IPO stock makes sense financially for the company and results in a bonanza for charity as the company increases its shareholder value. eBay is unique because it is actively participating in charitable giving early in its corporate life rather than as an after-thought."

"Since its inception, eBay’s mission has been to develop a strong, positive environment where people with common interests come together," said Pierre Omidyar, founder of eBay and advisor to the eBay Foundation™. "We created the eBay Foundation™ to take that philosophy one step further – to link people with the resources that will empower them to improve not only their own lives, but also the community around them."

About the eBay Foundation™
The eBay Foundation™, established in June 1998 as a separate entity from eBay Inc., is funded by eBay’s donation of 107,250 shares of its common stock to Community Foundation Silicon Valley (CFSV). The CFSV is a tax-exempt, public charity whose mission is to promote philanthropy and build a strong community by assisting donors in making effective charitable donations and making grants to a variety of nonprofit organizations across the nation.

In November 1998, a team of eBay employees volunteered to form a governance committee to direct the Foundation’s efforts. A cross-section of eBay employees from such departments as engineering, marketing, and customer support are responsible for selecting grant recipients.

"The eBay community has always been extremely generous," said Jeff Skoll, vice president of strategic planning and analysis for eBay. "eBay users are very responsive to our charity auction fundraisers and to the ‘eBay Giving Board,’ where users post their needs and others offer what they can to help out. In the altruistic spirit of our community, we’re thrilled to complement these efforts through the eBay Foundation™."

eBay Foundation's™ 1998 Grants
The eBay Foundation™ awarded its first two grants in December 1998 to "Friends of Farm Drive" and the University Research Expedition Program (UREP). Friends of Farm Drive is a nonprofit organization working to improve the quality of life for residents in a San Jose, Calif. neighborhood rampant with drug dealing and gang activity. The organization runs two community centers where volunteers assist with homework, teach English as a second language, arrange monthly food donations, staff innoculation clinics and administer tuberculosis testing and treatment. The eBay Foundation™ will help to fund a summer recreation program targeting "high risk" youths. The grant will also fund the creation of a computer learning center, where volunteers will work with youths and adults to assist them in gaining valuable computer skills.

The University Research Expedition Program (UREP), based in Davis, Calif., is an organization that sends volunteers on two-week expeditions to learn about archaeology, anthropology, environmental studies and earth sciences. The grant will provide scholarships for California elementary and high school teachers to participate in the programs, working with university scientists in countries around the world. Teachers will not only have the opportunity to work with local residents about such issues as preserving their rainforests, but also to share with their students at home what they have learned abroad.

"The first two recipients of eBay Foundation™ grants epitomize our goals and philosophy," said Karin Stahl, member of the eBay Foundation's™ advisory board. "The programs provide long-term and far-reaching benefits for their participants and those they touch in communities around the world. We selected these charities to help foster the growth of children and adults by providing both the basic needs for survival and the knowledge they need to succeed in the future."

Funding Criteria
The eBay Foundation™ is currently accepting applications for 1999 funding. Grant criteria and application details are available on eBay at http://pages.ebay.com/community/aboutebay/foundation/index.html. Grants are awarded to programs or projects that leverage existing resources, foster collaboration by various organizations to achieve a greater impact, empower individuals to improve their lives, benefit the local or global community at large, or make a significant positive, long-term impact on the people served.

eBay Soars To New Heights
-- Secures Position as the Second Most Popular Site on the Internet

San Jose, Calif. Jan. 29, 1999 -

eBayTM (NASDAQ: EBAY; www.ebay.com), the world's leading person-to-person online trading community, today announced that it is ranked the second most popular site on the Internet, when measured by total user minutes per month (696 million total user minutes), according to Media Metrix December 1998 Web report.

As a result of the close relationship eBay has built with its community, the site provides high user satisfaction and continues to attract large numbers of new registered users.

"My experience on eBay has been fraud-free," said Bill Bryant of San Jose, Calif., an avid collector of aviation memorabilia. "In the past six months I have bought over 100 items on eBay and have had only very positive experiences with sellers. It's pretty clear to me that the issue of fraud between buyers and sellers has been blown way out of proportion in recent weeks and does not reflect the majority of eBay user experiences."

Shanna and Wayne Bumbaca of Sheridan, Wyo., with the help of a full-time employee, average 1,000 transactions on eBay each week. They started trading on eBay in June 1997 and now earn their living entirely by selling artwork, mainly loose and framed prints, on eBay.

"My experience on eBay has been amazing," said Shanna. "All eBay users that we have conducted business with have been very honest. eBay certainly keeps us busy, but we have a lot of fun with it."

"My business has tripled this past year because of eBay," said Jon Bertolino, owner of Toizrit Inc. in Elgin, Ill. He sells collectible toys and vintage writing instruments, such as diecast Hot Wheels from the 1960s through the 1970s and Parker pens from the 1920s through the 1950s, on eBay. "I am amazed with the new forum that eBay has provided for my business and ecstatic with the success that I have found on the site. The quality of buyers on eBay continues to impress me."

Due to the tremendous growth of his sales on eBay, Jon has eliminated most of his print advertising and direct mailings to buyers. "eBay is just wonderful. Not only is my business booming, but also I have more time to focus on my personal life. Instead of continuous phone calls from buyers, I just post a picture and description on eBay, and the check arrives in the mail."

According to the Media Metrix report, eBay is the number three shopping site and the 20th most visited site on the Internet, when measured by percent reach. eBay's consolidated reach is 9.9 percent, representing approximately 5.6 million unique viewers.

"From October to December 1998, eBay's community grew from 1.2 million registered users to 2.1 million registered users, an increase of 72%. Over three years, eBay's exponential growth is the equivalent of growing from a small village into a major metropolitan area roughly the size of San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose combined," said eBay president and CEO Meg Whitman. "eBay offers the broadest selection of items for sale anywhere on the Internet - and quite possibly in the world - with more than 1.4 million items up for auction each day in more than 1000 categories. In fact, every minute of every day more than 150 new items are listed, more than 500 bids are placed, and seven new people register on eBay."

While less than 1/100 of one percent of the millions of transactions conducted on eBay have a reported fraud complaint, eBay aggressively works to prevent fraud and has recently instituted and intensified a number of initiatives to eliminate negative experiences on the site. eBay's comprehensive SafeHarborTM program was established to promote safe online trading as well as protect the community from fraud, the sale of illegal or infringing materials and people that would misuse the system.

eBay's response to the investigation by the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs

"eBay is eager to work with law enforcement regarding alleged fraudulent items sold on the site," according to Meg Whitman, eBay president and CEO. "We have zero tolerance for fraud.

We invite the New York Department of Consumer Affairs to share with us any and all information in this alleged case. We will make it our up-most priority to cooperate and resolve this issue."

It is unfortunate that the basis for several articles in the New York Post is attributed to an "unnamed source." This makes it hard to directly address this issue.

To date, the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs has made no requests for either information about eBay users or regarding eBay's internal policies for handling fraud complaints. Whitman stated, "Should New York City Department of Consumer Affairs decide to pursue an investigation, we pledge to work with the agency and cooperate fully to help resolve the issue."

According to Whitman, "It has always been eBay's practice to cooperate fully with any investigation involving improper or illegal activity by users on the site. We take pride in our community of 2.1 million users and our close working relationship with law enforcement and regulatory agencies. While less than 1/100 of 1 percent of the millions of transactions have a reported fraud complaint, eBay takes every one seriously.

While we do not have liability, we do have a responsibility to our community of users with respect to fraud prevention. Our responsibility-and one we take seriously-is to provide eBay users with effective tools, including insurance and escrow, that promote a safe trading environment.

Since the company was founded three years ago, eBay has taken numerous, significant steps to help ensure its users that they have safe and successful auctions."

Two weeks ago eBay announced even more SafeHarbor tools for users to utilize before, during and after the auction. Following is a list of the current and soon-to-be introduced 'Trust & Safety' resources on eBay:

Highlights of eBay's SafeHarbor trust and safety program includes:

  • Free insurance from Lloyd's of London
  • User registration validation with upcoming "Verified eBay User" status with accompanying icon
  • Comprehensive Feedback Forum
  • Easy to access to escrow
  • Tough Non-Paying Bidders and Shill Bidding policies
  • Clarification of illegal items that are not permissible for sale
  • Strong anti-piracy and anti-infringement program under the Legal Buddy program
  • 24/7 customer support
  • Close working relationship with law enforcement agencies
  • Educational auction tips and guidelines

A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words
eBay's New "Gallery" Feature Revolutionizes the Online Person-to-Person Trading Community

San Jose, Calif. Jan. 25, 1999

eBay(tm) (NASDAQ: EBAY; www.ebay.com), the world's leading person-to-person online trading community, today announced a revolutionary feature that gives online trading a whole new look - the eBay "Gallery." Providing users with a more intuitive way to browse and place bids, the eBay Gallery showcases auction items in a catalog of pictures rather than text. The result for eBay users is a fun and richer trading experience.

"The eBay Gallery will dramatically change the way people trade online. We are enabling our users to navigate through the site in a faster and more efficient, visually appealing format," said Brian Swette, senior vice president of marketing for eBay.

Unique to eBay, the Gallery is currently available in the "Antiques" category and will be rolled out into other eBay categories within the next few months. This new proprietary technology, patent pending, was developed in-house at eBay. "We have created sophisticated technology that indexes hundreds of thousands of images real-time every day and presents them to our users in a compelling way," said Mike Wilson, vice president product development and site operations.

Feedback from the eBay community inspired the development of the Gallery. eBay users requested a more visually exciting shopping experience to add to the thrill of bidding on unusual, hard-to-find and gotta-have items.

"This new technology is enabling people to experience eBay the way they experience the world - visually," continued Swette. "Browsing through the eBay Gallery is like strolling through the mall and window shopping. With pictures to spark their curiosity, users will not only enjoy looking at the categories they usually visit, but also explore different areas and find new items of interest."

When eBay users select a category, they will have the option to browse items up for auction in the Gallery or via the standard text format. While the text mode lists items in a column by title, items in the Gallery appear as a series of pictures with the title, current bid and remaining auction time listed below. Users may click on an individual image for more details about that particular auction. Similar to the text listings, the Gallery offers the highly popular "Featured Auctions," in which specific items are highlighted within each category.

eBayTM Launches The Most Comprehensive Trust And Safety Upgrades To The World's Largest Person-To-Person Trading Site
Online community to benefit from free insurance, SafeHarbor(tm) 2.0 and the Legal Buddy Program 2.0 as eBay continues to ensure a safe and fun place on the Internet for person-to-person trading

San Jose, Calif. Jan. 15, 1999

eBay(tm) (www.ebay.com, NASDAQ: EBAY) -- the world's leading person-to-person online trading community -- announced today the release of its updated SafeHarbor and Buddy Programs. SafeHarbor(tm) 2.0 and the Legal Buddy Program 2.0 are comprehensive programs that help promote safe online trading as well as protect the community from fraud, the sale of illegal or infringing materials and people that would misuse the system. Highlights of the comprehensive trust and safety program:

  • Free insurance from Lloyd's of London
  • Verified eBay User status with accompanying icon
  • Enhanced Feedback Forum
  • Easy access to escrow
  • Tougher Non-Paying Bidders and Shill Bidding policies
  • Clarification of illegal items that are not permissible for sale
  • Strengthened anti-piracy and anti-infringement program

While less than 1/100 of 1 percent of the millions of transactions have a reported fraud complaint, eBay takes every one seriously. Since it was founded in 1995, eBay has instituted a number of safety tools and resources including the Feedback Forum in Feb. '96 and SafeHarbor in Feb. '98. to actively work with the community and law enforcement agencies. eBay is now expanding this industry-leading program and providing even more with new tools and safeguards to make the site a safe place to trade online.

"eBay has zero tolerance for fraud," stated Meg Whitman, eBay president and CEO. "These new upgrades to the SafeHarbor and Legal Buddy Programs are designed to meet the demands of our growing community. While fraud and other trust and safety issues are not new, eBay's solutions are. We have committed and will continue to commit resources to have the most comprehensive programs in order to keep eBay a SafeHarbor for online person-to-person trading."

SafeHarbor(tm) 2.0
eBay vigilantly looks to protect its community and has created SafeHarbor 2.0 with new mechanisms added to its existing ones to help complete successful transactions, research complaints, and work with law enforcement agencies to investigate, arrest and convict fraudulent buyers or sellers on eBay.

Verified User Program
Currently, when a person joins the eBay community, they submit contact information that is verified at the time of registration and periodically updated to confirm its validity. In March '99, a new voluntary program -- Verified eBay User -- will encourage users to supply eBay with additional information for online verification. By offering their social security number, driver's license number and date of birth, users will, at an introductory price of $5, qualify for the highest level of verification on eBay. Verified eBay User status with accompanying icon means other eBay members can conduct transactions with added confidence in the identity of the user. All users' information will be protected under the eBay Privacy Policy and used exclusively for verification purposes.

"As a dedicated eBay member, I am in favor of the Verified eBay User program," stated Brent Peterson, an eBay user with 587 positive feedback points. "Now when I look up a user's profile, I will look for the Verified eBay User icon. For me, this symbol next to their name is another added level of confidence and trust."

To provide this online verification information, eBay will partner with Equifax Secure Inc., a division of Atlanta-based Equifax Inc., a trusted provider of consumer and business information. In evaluating the identity of the user, Equifax will compare and analyze the information provided by the user against consumer data from Equifax and other consumer and business information sources. The transfer of all private member information will be secure and encrypted.

Feedback Forum
At the core of the eBay community is the Feedback Forum, where registered buyers and sellers build up their online trading reputation. The Feedback Forum provides users with the ability to comment on their experiences with another individual. This creates a user feedback profile, which follows the user everywhere on eBay. Enhancements to the Feedback Forum will distinguish between feedback tied to a transaction (with the item number) and general feedback. In addition, for easier reading, responses and clarifications to comments will now be tied together to encourage further dialogue.

Insurance
By March '99, SafeHarbor 2.0 will automatically provide insurance from Lloyd's of London for users (with a net non-negative feedback rating) on their auctions up to $200, subject to a deductible of $25. eBay and Lloyd's of London have designed this program to set a new standard for safe online trading at no cost to the user.

For items over $200 or when either a buyer or seller feels the need for additional security, eBay recommends escrow services. With an easy to access link to a third-party escrow service, both partners in the deal will be protected.

Shill Bidding Policy
Trust within the community is lessened when a user makes a bid on an item with the intent to drive up the price of item and not to purchase it. With a new tougher shill bidding policy, eBay drives home the message that it does not tolerate shill bidding on one's own items either directly or through the use of multiple identities. The policy now clearly states there is a 30-day suspension for first time offenders and indefinite suspension following a second offense.

Non-Paying Bidder Policy
To help protect sellers, clear policy guidelines are also being set forth for non-paying bidders, a community-coined word for bidders who do not honor their commitment after winning an auction. Since there can be extenuating circumstances, first time non-payment results in a friendly warning. A sterner warning is issued for a second time offense with a 30-day suspension for a third offense and indefinite suspension for the fourth offense. This feature takes effect immediately and works independently of the Feedback Forum.

An additional upgrade to SafeHarbor 2.0 is the further clarification of illegal items that are not permissible for sale on eBay. As clearly outlined in the User Agreement, eBay does not allow the posting of items that are in violation of laws, statutes, ordinances or regulations. To further define this point, eBay will post a partial reference list of less obvious non-permissible items, which include live animals, human relics and remains, bulk email lists and other items.

Legal Buddy Program 2.0
The Legal Buddy Program has been upgraded by strengthening the ongoing relationship between eBay and Content Owners, the owners of intellectual property rights or copyrighted items. eBay is currently working with more than 100 industry-leading companies from software publishers to toy manufacturers to apparel makers.

Once notified by a Content Owner, eBay will remove illegal or unlicensed items. To help alert Content Owners, eBay has developed numerous tools, including an automated daily key word search for Content Owners to use to quickly enable them to find potentially infringing auction items. Dedicated email accounts will be established for Content Owners to contact eBay to remove the questionable items.

When items are removed from the site an email notice will be sent to the seller as well as any bidders, directing them to the Content Owner for further information. Many Content Owners are providing an educational "About Me" Web page to give users further information about copyrighted or other infringing items, what is permissible and not permissible to sell, FAQs and a company contact to discuss the authenticity of the item.

Enforcing SafeHarbor 2.0 and the Legal Buddy Program 2.0, the SafeHarbor Team currently consists of 24 members. This dedicated staff works around the clock to remove items and suspend users for inappropriate behavior. The Team diligently investigates and pursues claims of fraud and inappropriate or infringing items and works closely with local, state and Federal law enforcement agencies, including the FTC, FBI, ATF, state attorneys general and the Postmaster General.

As the community has always defined eBay, these changes to the SafeHarbor and the Legal Buddy programs will be launched in concert with community input and involvement in the first quarter of the year. Beginning next week, eBay will host discussions and invite community members to post their input on the "Discuss eBay's Newest Features" board. In addition, conforming changes will be made to the user agreement and Community Guidelines to take into account the new SafeHarbor 2.0 and Legal Buddy Program 2.0.

"We applaud eBay for taking these innovative steps to reduce the potential for problems with online auction transactions," said Susan Grant, director of the National Consumers League's Internet

Fraud Watch (IFW) program. "Providing more reliable information about sellers and preventing shills from abusing the system should give consumers more confidence in bidding for items." The IFW program, which can be reached through www.fraud.org, offers advice to online shoppers and relays consumers' reports about suspected Internet fraud to law enforcement agencies. IFW's online auction tips, including how to pay the safest way, are featured on the eBay site.

eBay is changing the way people collect by opening the world of the Internet to people from across the country to share their passion for collectibles, hard-to-find items or other auctionable items.

Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa 1998 Home Run Balls To Be Auctioned Online and On-Live
eBay to Begin Auction January 5 on the Internet; Guernsey's to Conclude Bidding January 12 at Madison Square Garden

SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 4

/PRNewswire/ -- The opportunity to own a piece of baseball history starts tomorrow on eBay (Nasdaq: EBAY; www.ebay.com). Four Mark McGwire and three Sammy Sosa 1998 home run balls will be auctioned in a manner perhaps as historical as the balls themselves. The auction will begin at eBay, the world's largest person-to-person online trading community, where qualified bidders may place bids January 5 through January 11. The next day, January 12, Guernsey's, the New York auction house, will conclude the auction at Madison Square Garden in what is believed to be the first-ever On-Live(tm) auction.

The auctions will consist of four Mark McGwire home run balls, including the 63rd, 67th, 68th, and the record smashing 70th ball, and Sammy Sosa's 61st, 64th, and 66th balls. In addition, other historic baseballs will be available for auction On-Live, January 12. Anyone interested in following the auction can look for the "Home run Ball" link on eBay, check out "...other happenings" on eBay's home page, or go directly to http://pages.ebay.com/homerun-ball.html

The online portion of the historic auction will begin with seven, individual private auctions on eBay beginning January 5 at 12 p.m. PST. On January 11 at 12 p.m. PST, the eBay auctions will close and the top three bids from each home run ball will advance to the On-Live portion. The On-Live auction will begin at 9 a.m. PST on January 12 at Madison Square Garden with a minimum bid equal to the highest bid from the online auction. Each of the three online bidders will place bids in traditional eBay proxy fashion -- placing the highest bid amount they would pay for the item. The eBay system will increase their bids automatically relative to other bids, both online and On-Live, until reaching that maximum bid.

"Hosting this historic sports auction is truly an honor for eBay," said Steve Westly, eBay vice president of marketing and business development. "Never before has such a prestigious auction of America's greatest pastime been available to the online community. The online format brings this historic auction to a broader audience of people who have never been able to participate in an auction of this scale before."

Online bidders will have the opportunity to increase their maximum bid a nytime during the auction. Bidding against the three online bidders will be a number of On-Live bidders at Madison Square Garden. Linking them together will be a large screen displaying the eBay Web page hosting the auction.

"This is the big auction that everyone has been waiting for and Guernsey's is thrilled to contribute to baseball's history," said Arlan Ettinger, president of Guernsey's. "The combination of an online and On-Live auction hosted by Guernsey's and eBay signifies one of the most historic sports memorabilia collecting events to date. Truly, this unique partnership will offer sports memorabilia collectors worldwide an opportunity to bid on a piece of history."

Bidder Verification
In order to take part in this historic auction through eBay, participants will follow a bidder verification process developed for this high-profile event. All participants must become registered eBay users and will be required to do the following:
* Complete and return a Home run Ball user agreement to eBay
* Provide financial qualifications to Guernsey's by obtaining an irrevocable letter of credit from the participant's financial institution for the maximum amount that will be bid on all lots included in this auction (minimum amount: $100,000)
* Purchase an auction catalog for "The Baseballs of 1998" from Guernsey's.
Specific details concerning the auction can be found on the eBay Web site by visiting http://pages.ebay.com/homerun-ball-participate.html. For more information about purchasing an auction catalog, contact Guernsey's directly or visit http://www.guernseys.com.

History of These Home Run Baseballs
Major League Baseball's magical season climaxed on September 27, 1998, when Phil Ozersky caught Mark McGwire's 70th home run ball at Busch Stadium. The 70th ball is the crown jewel of this unique auction, but all the baseballs have their own place in history. On September 15, Mark McGwire stepped to the plate against the Pittsburgh Pirates and belted home run number 63 (450th of his career), which was caught by John Grass in the left-center field stands at Busch Stadium. On September 26 in St. Louis, McGwire came to the plate in the fourth inning against Montreal and smacked home run number 67 into left field, where Douglas Singer was waiting, glove ready, to make history. In that same game, McGwire's 68th home run ball went to Heath Wiseman, a student from Iowa State University.

While McGwire was chasing a piece of history in St. Louis, someone was chasing McGwire in Chicago. McGwire's friend, Sammy Sosa, was also closing in on Roger Maris' record. Sammy Sosa's 61st home run ball, the one that tied Roger Maris' former record, will be a part of this live auction, with all the proceeds being donated to The Sammy Sosa Charitable Foundation. Also up for auction will be Sosa's 64th home run ball, caught by Veron Kuhlemeier in the right field stands of Milwaukee's County Stadium on September 23. Perhaps most impressive is the sale of Sosa's historic 66th home run ball, representing the second most home runs hit in a single season, hit on September 25 and currently owned by Albert Chapa.

A catalog describing each of the stories behind the seven home run balls is available from Guernsey's. The catalog features color photos of each ball and historical anecdotes from the famous home runs. Guernsey's, located at 108 East 73rd Street in Manhattan, is recognized as one of America's leaders in conducting specialized auctions of unique and rare 20th century objects. Some of Guernsey's more noted auctions include the JFK collection, the contents of the S.S. United States (the world's largest auction) and the first auction of artwork from the Soviet Union. Other sales include the art of Walt Disney, vintage carousel figures, and historic international racing cars.
