Coin Listing Tips for 2003
Hit the ground running this year. Review our quick guide to essential coin listing strategies.

#1 Grade Accurately! Learn to grade through the American Numismatic Association or have your coins certified by a reputable grading company, such as NGC or PCGS.

#2 Clearly describe defects and/or damage. Also, note if the coin is dark or toned.

#3. Provide clear obverse and reverse photos of the actual item for sale.

#4 If possible, give an exact shipping cost, especially if the item is heavy.

#5 If offering multiples of the same coin in one auction lot, specify if that lot consists of one coin or multiples of the same coin.

#6 Do your research. Use your "my eBay" search tools to obtain current market pricing on your items and reference books for more detailed information. Consider working with an eBay Trading Assistant. These specialists can help you expand your market and business.

#7 Do not end your listings in the early morning hours. Schedule them so that they close during work or evening in all time zones. Not many collectors are biding at 4 a.m.!

#8 If launching coin listings on Wednesday or Thursday, consider listing them as 10-day auctions. This will give listed lots exposure over two weekends.

#9 When listing items in Exonumia, consider alternative categories under Collectibles, such as Historical Memorabilia and Militaria.

#10 When possible, start coins at "$1 no reserve" or "$9.99 no reserve" to help build price momentum.

These are just a few tips to use when listing coins. Be sure to trade tips and ideas with other eBayers! Email us your favorite listing tips!

Certified Coins Sell for More
Boost your bottom line by getting your coins graded by a reputable and professional company. Research indicates that key and semi-key coins lead the way in conversion rates when graded by independent grading companies, such as PCGS and NGC. Also, eBay's most popular search data shows that both "PCGS" and "NGC" consistently appear as top coin search terms.

Whether it is a 1909-S VDB or a 1921-D Mercury dime, you will get the results and piece of mind of selling certified coins that are authenticated and graded by professional third party grading services.

Here are some important tips and questions to ask when evaluating a grading service:
  • What are the credentials of the professional grading staff?
  • How long have they been in business?
  • Do they offer a guarantee on the authenticity and grading of a coin?
  • Do their coins trade sight unseen nationally?
Remember -- getting your key or semi-key coins graded and authenticated by a reputable grading company can improve the chances of selling your coins, as well as, selling the coins for higher prices.

Tapping into Trends
According to rare coin dealer Mark Goldberg, eBay not only has changed the coin industry, it's changed his life.

"If it weren't for eBay, I'd be retired, working on my golf game and boat pursuits," he jokes.

Goldberg retired as the head of a large wholesale coin company four years ago, burned out and disinterested in the industry.

eBay provided him an exciting new beginning. Now, he runs a successful online operation with just two people, and focuses on what he loves, his coins and collectibles. Better yet, he's making real money. "Sales have tripled since 2000," says Goldberg. "Our return client rate exceeds 40%."

He is also enthusiastic about the coin industry again. The hobby is more inclusive now, says Goldberg. eBay has reduced the cost of selling and given collectors of all levels access to premium material at more affordable prices. Moreover, it has made the hobby truly international.

"Our international business is growing dramatically," says Goldberg, adding that he now has more repeat business internationally than domestically, largely in Canada, Europe, and Asia.

Gold is especially hot overseas, he says, particularly in "areas where high inflation erodes the value of one's money." The gold market is also strong in China, where its purchase was only recently legalized. Goldberg also credits his international success to PayPal, which has made overseas payments effortless. He estimates that the service has increased his overall sales by 33%.

Other eBay Strategies? He's SquareTrade verified. He lists $1, No Reserve auctions - bids attract more bids, says Goldberg. Finally, he ships some items two to three hours after receiving online payments through PayPalÉwith commemorative stamps, no less.
