Finding Your Niche
| According to PowerSeller Yohan Abitbol, his eBay business was just a happy accident. Regardless, it's now one of the DVD category's top grossers. Why: specialization.
In three years, Abitbol's DVD Legacy has grown from a minor experiment, created to liquidate a batch of excess DVDs, into he and his brother's main enterprise. They made the transition by analyzing the market, identifying an opportunity, and specializing their business.
While DVD Legacy began its business selling new DVD movie releases, it now focuses almost exclusively on television series boxed sets. The choice was obvious upon reviewing the entertainment market, says Abitbol.
"There's more promotion going on for the television series, so there's serious demand for them," he explains. "Also, series are more expensive and you earn more money on them then a single DVD."
Another upside: there's not as big an "after-market" in television series boxed sets, unlike the latest movie releases, which are often resold by buyers online. Series collectors hold onto their boxed sets, reducing competition for Abitbol and preserving his prices.
DVD Legacy's approach has also led to more bulk buying. "Many buyers come to television series late and then want to catch up on the first and second season," explains Yohan
Admirably, DVD Legacy continues to refine its strategy. It now carries cable hits, such as The Sopranos and Sex in the City, as well as hot regular network shows. In fact, a current top seller is Fox's 24. "We are focusing on all the television shows," says Abitbol. "We are trying to carry everything."
Abitbol has even expanded into popular PBS documentaries (Ken Burns's Civil War), overseas sitcoms (Absolutely Fabulous), and new classics like the X-Files, not to mention movie bundles, from Austin Powers to Dirty Harry.
Most importantly, DVD Legacy has added complete season collections. Bundling products means lower shipping costs and greater convenience for customers, according to Abitbol.
"Instead of buying one here and one there, [buyers] get everything in one purchase and avoid double and triple shipping," he says.
