Sell Items at Fixed Price with eBay's New Pricing Format
eBay now offers the best of both worlds-auction-style and fixed-price listings. Maximize your time: Buy or sell items instantly at a set price.
  • Buyers: Purchase items immediately--no bidding or waiting. It's the fastest, most convenient way to shop.

  • Sellers: Sell items at the price you want without waiting for your listing to end. Example: Set the price for your item at $50 and sell it for $50 to the first person who offers that price.
For easy browsing, the new "Auction" tab separates auction-style and fixed-price listings. At a glance, buyers can locate items available for competitive bidding or instant purchase. Also, both auction-style and fixed-price items are integrated into eBay Search, ensuring that both formats receive maximum exposure.

To list fixed price, there are no added fees, either. Fixed-price listings have the same insertion, feature, and final value fees as auction-style listings and can be listed for the same duration (3, 5, 7, or 10 days). And, unlike auctions with Buy It Now, a fixed-price item can be listed and purchased as a single item or in multiples. That's flexibility and simplicity your customers will appreciate.

If you sell goods and accessories which do not require competitive bidding to establish a fair market price, fixed-price is for you.
  • Provide an easy way for buyers to purchase items instantly at a set, accepted price.

  • Appeal to buyers who are new to the auction experience.

  • Sell in quantity to buyers who are unfamiliar with Dutch auctions.

  • Satisfy your customers product needs more efficiently and easily.

  • Increase the speed and volume of transactions you perform.
New U.S. seller requirements apply for Fixed Price items and Dutch Auctions:
  • Single-quantity Fixed Price items require 10 feedback or ID Verification (same as Auctions w/ BIN).

  • Multiple-quantity Fixed Price items and Dutch auctions require 30 feedback and 14 days registered, or ID Verification.

  • Multiple quantity U.S. listings require a $0.99 minimum price.

frogtown (5590), Frogtown Books
On eBay, differentiation isn't just important, it's crucial, says PowerSeller Pete Baughman, owner of FrogTown Books. If you're not special, you're shortchanging your sales.

To make sure his offerings are always unique, Baughman keeps tabs on his competition on a daily basis. He usually tracks five or more closing items on his my eBay page with the "Watch It" feature.

Regarding the items he watches, he says "I want to see what's going to happen because I may have copies myself–or I may want to buy some in the future." In other words, he checks if the market is right for his own copy or if he should scoop up an undervalued item for resale.

Moreover, the "Watch It" feature helps him track what's available and what not to list. One of his main listing strategies is simply "to sell what other Internet dealers aren't." That way the closing price of his listings reflects the market price for his books and is less affected by other dealers who might undercut him.

He has another novel pricing strategy that keeps him ahead of the competition. In his specialties, such as Gone With the Wind, he keeps a fine first edition copy available almost continuously. This serves as excellent advertising for his other listings and prevents inferior copies from devaluing his average selling price.

"Its might not sell, but it's there," explains Baughman. "People know I have them and it keeps other dealers from saying they've got great copies when they don't."

eBay also is Baughman's venue of choice for damaged books. "I don't want to take a very fragile book to a show and carry it around -- it's going to get beat up," he explains. Instead, he describes its defects precisely and sells it on eBay for a competitive price.

Finally, multiples are a favorite of his for eBay. He'll take two copies of a great book, put one on his shelves and list the other on eBay. This lowers his inventory risk, increases his cash flow and exposes his books to online and offline markets. "eBay is fast, it's cash flow, it keeps me going," explains Baughman.

And of course, there are those happy occurrences that buyers and sellers thrive on.

"Every once in awhile something on eBay will just go out of sight," he says. "I sold a P.G. Woodhouse today, which I would have priced at $125 in my store. It went for $595." He adds, "Two people just had to have it."
