What is a Beta Test?

A beta test occurs when we distribute code that is not fully complete or functional for the purpose of real life testing. A beta test solicits feedback on functionality and help in identifying bugs.

Should I be a Beta Tester?

Beta testing can be hard work, but it can be very rewarding. Beta testers are treated with a first look at the new software and can provide meaningful input which could have a direct impact on the final product. Beta testers also will learn the product earlier and can reach a level of competence sooner.

The success of a beta test depends greatly upon the testers understanding of what to expect from the test. If a tester is surprised or disappointed by the beta software, then it will make for an unpleasant experience.

Beta testers should understand that beta code:

will have bugs of varying degrees of importance
may not be fully operational
could cause unexpected results
should not be used as your only production tool
may not be documented

Beta testers should be:

comfortable trying new software
be proficient using computers and software
be able to backup and restore files and programs
be willing to provide feedback, opinions and suggestions in a constructive manner
