Presale listings policy

Policy overview

Presale items are typically listed before they're available to the general public. These items (video games, tickets, and custom-made items) aren't in the seller's control or possession when they're listed.

To list presale items, you must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Guarantee that the item will be available for shipping within 30 days from the purchase date.

    • This information must be clearly stated in your listing.

  • Clearly indicate in the listing that the item is a presale item.

  • The handling time specified in your listing should reflect the time from the end of the listing until the item is shipped to the buyer.

    • The correct handling time must be stated in your listing.

  • At our discretion, we may approve sellers who meet certain criteria (first party providers, etc.) to list presale items such as subscriptions, event tickets, video games, etc. without these restrictions.

Make sure you follow these guidelines. If you don't, you may be subject to a range of actions. We may limit, restrict, or suspend you from buying, selling, or using site features. All of your listings may be removed, displayed lower or not shown in search results, without refunding any or all applicable fees. You may also forfeit special account status and any discounts.

Some examples

  • Alice sells video games. She will receive a shipment of a new, very desirable video game from the publisher within 39 days. She starts a 10-day auction on eBay. Her listing clearly states that these games are offered as presale items, and that she will ship them to buyers within 30 days from the date the listing ends. Alice's handling time states 20 business days, since that is the time from the end of the listing to when the item is shipped. Alice's listing complies with this policy.

  • Albert, Alice's competitor, also sells video games. He will also receive his shipment from the publisher within 39 days. Albert starts an auction that's almost identical to Alice's, except he chooses a 5-day format. Albert is violating this policy because he won't be able to ship the item within 30 days from the date the listing ends.

Additional information

eBay Money Back Guarantee

If you bought a presale item that you didn't receive, you have 30 days after the estimated delivery date to request a refund in My eBay. If no estimated delivery date is available, you can request a refund in My eBay 7 days after paying for an item if the item was shipped domestically, or 30 days after paying for an item if the item was shipped internationally. Learn more about eBay Money Back Guarantee timelines.

Subscriptions

Subscriptions are considered presale items and typically aren't allowed to be listed on eBay.

Layaway payment programs

Layaway payments and similar payment programs aren't allowed because the item will not generally be shipped to the buyer within 30 days of the purchase date.

Pre-release items

For pre-release items and their accessories, we may block listings until there are no more than 30 days to the release date of the item.

Why does eBay have this policy?

The presale listing guidelines are designed to allow members to buy and sell items that aren't available yet and to protect members from a potentially bad transaction.
