EBAY INC. GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP: SOCIAL VENTURES

Good at Our Core

In the words of our founder, Pierre Omidyar, eBay was created to be a "force for good". And in fact, our core businesses have a positive impact around the world. From breaking down geographic barriers to generating economic opportunity, eBay, PayPal and Skype are doing good in over 190 countries. They are also fundamentally green - with eBay having facilitated the re-use of an estimated $100 billion in used goods since 1998, PayPal setting the standard as a paperless financial transaction company, and Skype enabling energy efficient global communications.

Extending Our Impact

Building on this positive impact, we are harnessing the capabilities that underlie our core businesses to further our ability to be a "force for good." Our efforts have resulted in several new businesses, what we refer to as "Social Ventures," that leverage our assets, expertise and scale to target specific social needs. Each of our Social Ventures applies our fundamental business model - connecting people. Just as eBay, PayPal and Skype connect people to trade, pay and communicate, our Social Ventures connect people to create good in the world. Information about our current Social Ventures is below:

MicroPlace connects people with the world's working poor to alleviate poverty. It is a marketplace where everyday investors can invest in microfinance organizations that provide loans to the working poor, enabling them to lift themselves from poverty with dignity. For these people, a small loan can be the catalyst to opening and running a successful small business. With a minimum investment of $100, investors can both earn a financial return and change the world.

Investments on MicroPlace are currently limited to U.S. residents.

WorldofGood.com connects people with producers of 'socially responsible' goods. It is an eBay marketplace where consumers can buy products verified by third party "trust providers" to have a positive impact on people and our planet. Whether shopping for artisan goods that preserve cultural tradition, kitchenware made from sustainably harvested wood, or coffee produced in compliance with Fair Trade standards, buyers can align their personal values with their purchase decisions.

The WorldofGood.com community site is currently live and features blogs and articles related to socially responsible shopping. The marketplace will launch during the Summer of 2008.

eBay Giving Works on eBay.com and eBay for Charity on eBay.co.uk connect people with causes they care about to facilitate innovative, convenient and trusted fundraising. eBay sellers can opt to donate part or all of a sale to any of 15,000+ certified nonprofits - and nonprofits can also sell on eBay to fundraise - with eBay crediting back some basic selling fees. Charity listings on eBay stand out with a special icon, making it easy for buyers to shop for a cause. And now, a new feature enables people to make charitable contributions via PayPal within the eBay platform. To date, more than $150 million has been raised for charity from listings sold on eBay.
